  1. I know what you mean about the music. I have Burl Ives singing "Boy Scouts of America" as well as the "On my Honor" song and Taps. I could send you a cassete tape if you want it. For my sons Eagle, we had a bagpiper play Scouting Thunder, almost all bagpipers know it, just ask for "Scotland the Brave", its the same thing.
  2. The fact the bible doesnt mention female offspring of Eve doesnt bother me as women were not as highly regarded as men in those times. (or in some troops today, but that is another thread, and this is only said in jest) I understand that God can do anything he wishes. And thats the hardest thing about religion, sometimes you just have to suspend human rationality and just "believe"
  3. I ask the indulgence of anyone who thinks this is a stupid question, but I have always wanted to know the explanation of the following question. First off, I am not a biblical literalist, but I do believe it was divinely inspired. If Adam and Eve were the first two human beings, and Cain and Abel were their sons, who did Cain and Abel marry? It had to be their sisters. If this is true, why didnt all sorts of genetic problems occur? I have always wondered what the explanation was and it seems the posters here have the most knowledge of this subject that I have ever met. Again, I am not trying to be "funny", I would like to know what the explanation is,
  4. I am so happy for you and Yaworski as well that you guys have one less menace to worry about (I hope) I would also remind us all to still pray, while I am no psychic, I would ask us all to pray for those who will be murdered tonight, whether in the DC area or not.
  5. I always thought that Christ died for the sins of all mankind, that he came to teach us the right way to live. I am not sure how this proves/disproves evolution. For those who respond, type slow and use small words, I am no bilogist
  6. Ed, check page 8 of the "Three Million" thread
  7. Actually our troop doesnt need turkey to make the "Blazing Saddles" scene look tame, that pretty much happens anyway even if chili isnt on the menu.
  8. Rooster, Since I was the only one who recently made a comemnt that "the system failed", I beleive I should clarify my comment. I was not commenting on the aspect of whether or not moms should be allowed on campouts, I was commenting on Sctmom comment: "Also, apparently my son is not for Boy Scouts since he doesn't want to camp every month and I don't have him focused on being Eagle at 13 years old." If she feels that way, and by her posts, she has tried to do what she can, then the system has failed. I was not passing judgement on any of the posters of this thread.
  9. Rooster, Good points... In out troop we have one Hindu and one Jewish scout. Each is in a different patrol, one a First Year and the other an older boys patrol. The Hindu scout's patrol doesnt have to swear off meat, but has to have alternatives on the menu. The Jewish boy's patrol doesnt have to swear off pork, but also has to have an alternative. Now if these scout were in the same patrol, the permutations could get interesting... I would define respect for another's religion as saying you are free to practice what you wish and to be free of insults or criticism of it AS LONG AS you extend the same courtesy to me. I dont stop eating beef or pork on camp outs with the Hindu scout or jewish boy, but then again, I dont seek them out and make "yummy" noises (see Young Frankenstein) next to them either. Right now with two scouts on such dietary restrictions I dont see a problem. But it wouldnt take long I can see, for a real issue if more and different diets were added. Then again, we have a scout who has dietary restrictions based on a medical condition.I think if its a food group, he is allergic to it. From milk, to eggs, chocolate (he does eat carob) to fruit juice I am not sure what he can eat (personally I am an omnivore) and we accomodate him. Well, actually his family provides his food and we keep it with the troop stuff marked for him. That may be the answer if dietary restricitons become a real problem. The patrols publish a menu and if you cant eat it, bring your own (with a compensatory reduction ins activity fee since you are providing your own food) You know, this respecting diversity could be a real problem
  10. "...and to keep the boys under control after dark..." To quote Wayne Cambell, of the Aurora, Ill Cable Access Show "Wayne's World", yeah, that will happen NOT!!! Remember no matter how it turns out, most of the kids will think its perfect
  11. Sctmom, I am sorry that you feel this way. I dont mean this in a trite way, but you haven't failed, the system has. Your areas Boy Scout loss is the areas Cub Scout gain.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  12. Our troop normally does two nights, we usually leave from the CO (a church) at 6:30-7:00. We have driven 2-3 hours at times, and then we set up camp. The kids have gotten setting camp up in the dark down pretty well. Some parents have quesitoned if the lateness doesnt tire the kids out, well, they are up till midnight (or longer talking in their tents) no matter when we get there. Getting up at 7 to start the day is a whole lot better than starting out for the trip (my opinion)
  13. Here's a thought, throw the issue to the PLC. Odds are the PLC is composed of both dumpers (those who leave early, come late, etc) and dumpees (those who get stuck when others leave. See what they come up with to address the situation. You never know, it could be rather interesting, entertaining at the least
  14. I think you misunderstood me Rooster, I dont think passion and being righteous is always a bad thing if you believe in your cause and its is your primary goal. I meant that you and Bob, (both fine people) are very similar even if you guys lock horns at times. That is all I mean to convey. " God Bless us everyone"
  15. See if you can contact a SM or ASM who went to the naitonal Jamboree last year. Each sub camp is its own tent city and the leaders got layouts of how each troop was to put its gear and where the "lanes" were. Each troop has 40 members. That should give you a sense of space requirements.
  16. Rooster and Bob White, A somewhat off the topic Observation Rooster and Bob, I do not mean this as a snipe/insult/degradation or what have you. And I in no way think you two are the sme person, but: Have you two ever considered how very similar you guys are? Bob White shows the same dedication and passion to the BSA program that Rooster does towards Christianity. Just as Rooster is quick to point out the failings of attacks on Christians and defends his faith, Bob is quick to point out failings on the part of those who attack the BSA program and defends it. I in no way mean to blaspheme and I am not implying Bob White regards the BSA as his "religion", it is something that he feels very strongly about, as I am sure he feels strongly about a number of topics as does Rooster and would defend attacks on those topics with vigor. Its great that this forum allows such dedicated and passionate people to express their views on scouting. And I mean all of us, not just Rooster and Bob. Back on task: It is disheartening that at times we become a playground for a disruptor, but that is the price we pay for an open fourm. An open exchange of ideas cant take place when limitations are placed on them. I know I have learned a lot about scouting in this forum, when I started I thought I knew it all and was confident of my program knowledge. Well, as my old high school biology teacher often said, "its not what you dont know that gets you in trouble, its what you think you know that just ain't so(ok, so he wasnt an English teacher) and I have proved that to myself over and over. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, Here I am, stuck in the middle with you. (With All my forum buddies, I mean after all we are here for the boys right?)
  17. All seriousness aside, an onion makes a great cooking vessel. You can do the same thing with a bell pepper, cut it lenghtwise, add in ground beef or a small bit of cubed steak and veggies and sit back, (far back so you dont kick ashes in your dinner) Or you can stuff the onion or pepper with natures second most perfect food. The second most perfect food? Why Bisquick of course. You make the batter really thin, you make crepes You make the batter thin, you make pancakes You make the batter thicker, you make waffles You make it thicker yet and put it in your pepper and place it on the coals for a biscuit Add some eggs and sugar, put it in a dutch oven and make cobbler of your choice. You dice up some Spam and mix it in the bisquick and fry it, or bake it (or if you're Ed, dump it) Spam and Bisquick can also be combined with a little marinara sauce and mozzarella and mushrooms and a dutch oven and you have campfire pizza Throw on the onion pieces you pulled out and slice up the other half of the green pepper and you'll never want to go home. Ok, so this post want all utensiless cooking, but I did manage to work in Spam, Pizza, and Bisquick, the staff of life.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  18. CousCous are a middle eastern food. The best way I can explain it is think of pasta ground down to pellets half the size of a grain of rice. Because the grains are so small, cooking time it practically nothing. You add the boiling water the recipe calls for, mix it up and you are ready to eat. Since it is a pasta, it needs something for flavor, so you can get pine nut, chicken, etc flavors. Look for it in the ethnic food section of your grocery. Dice op some smoke flavored Spam and you'll wonder why you dont eat that way more often. CousCous are a complex carbohydrate for high energy, perfect for back packing.
  19. Excellent thought Scoutparent, therefore Yaworski are you Zorn or Zorn are you Yaworski?
  20. Rooster, I see a lot of forum members asking Zorn for clarification on his statements(myself included), trying to ascertain his personal philosphy. I have come to the conclusion the quote "...Among all the bad, the Nazis were builders, engineers and lovers of art...." is really all we need to know about him. I appologize for my obtuse initial post on this issue. I meant only to emphasize he has a history of outrageous quotes.
  21. That Zorn gets to express his ideas and thoughts here is his right. Back on Friday, September 27, 2002 in the "RE: Court rules Pledge of Allegiance 'unconstitutional" Zorn posted: "Q.E.D. What have you proven? That I'm not a white supremacist? Not hardly, I just said that I'm not a neo-Nazi. Neo-Nazis shouldn't even use the term "Nazi" to describe themselves. Among all the bad, the Nazis were builders, engineers and lovers of art. The neo-Nazis only destroy. To reiterate, Zorn is free to post his ideas as are we.
  22. And I thought to stew an onion all you had to do was make fun of its mother...
  23. There is a dress uniform blazer??? Where do I get one? I checked the on-line scout stuff website and couldnt find it, how do you get one?
  24. I thought Darwin left God in his theory, didnt he?
