  1. Ok NJ, I'll stop but remember you started it ::tongue firmly stuck out:: As it is, does a family have a right to medical privacy or not? Where does privacy stop and the troop's need to know begin? And I ask the lawyers of the group to weigh in on HIPPA requirements. And if the lawyers dont know about HIPPA, consider it continuing education to find out about it, it could be huge.
  2. Kwc, wasnt a snipe hunt was it? Cuz in that case.... Oops. dont need to highjack another thread. Funny, though I despise Snipe Hunts as degrding, An after sunset game of Capture the Flag suits me just fine as long as the boys have seen the course in the daylight. I mean, I dont want all the fun sucked out of the program. The question is not of morals and ethics, but of legal issues. Under HIPPA (as I understand it) all health information is privileged. As for your Emergency Response team, the ICU Head Nurse and EMT, I wonder if they could share the concept of Unviersal Precautions with the troop. May not be a bad thing for BSA to add to the first aid requirements.
  3. The mind reels.... Father seems to nice a term to apply to the perpertrator. kwc, without getting into whether or not Capture the Flag is an appropriate night time activity ( I think it is) have none of your troop heard about the afore mentioned Universal Precautions? It boils down to treating every patient as if they had AIDS. Every year healthcare workers die from exposure to blood bourne diseases. Only a tiny fraction is AIDS, mostly its Hepatitis B. Using universal precautions is the smart way to handle all first aid circumstances where blood is present. Now, should the troop know about the boys condition, do they have a right to know? Interesting quesiton. According to HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996)a persons health history is privileged information and may only be released by either the patient or patient's guardian. So, I guess the question is, is it legal for BSA to dispense medical condition without the proper authorization. I would agree the troop needs this information, but is it legal to give it to them against the boy's mother's wishes? This opens a lot of questions, just what can troop leadership keep secret and what must be known by some, by all?
  4. Just this past saturday our Venture Crew had its Christmas Party/Court of Honor. We had three Bronze Award recipient. One was in the Outdoors category and the other two in Youth Ministries. The two Youth Ministries recipients are in their first year of college and I must admit I wasnt too surpised to see one of them sporting a lip ring. The young lady's parents were also in attendance, her father is Scoutmaster of her brother's troop (son is so far umarked) and her mother is on the District Advancement Commitee and a Girl Scout leader, her daughter, the Bronze Awardee sports a Girl Scout Gold Award on her Venture uniform. She was quite instumental in setting up the Habitat for Humanity trip this past summer. Cant say the parents were pleased over the facial "adornment", neither was I, but sometimes you have to see the entire package, not just a single irratation.
  5. Actually the Scout units chartered by a church should be fine, its the ones that are chartered by VFW, American Legion Posts, Etc that I wonder about
  6. When things like this happen, a Blue Card is signed off, requirements not taught an signed, do any of the forum members go back to the counselor and question him? DO any of you talk to the camp director or advancement chair? In short do you do anything to prevent a re-occurence?
  7. Express your opinion? of course you can. Set a policy? No you can't. Now, the Chartering Organization could.
  8. Any policy on this subject should address the safety aspect only. Its not up to the scoutmaster to decide if a tattoo is ok or not, neither is it his place to rule on body piercings. These are decisions between the boy and his family. That being said, if the tattoo is obscene (and I can see a whole thread on that) then a bandage should be placed over it during scoutitng activties. If piercings such as hoops, bars, whatever present a problem on a trip, they can be adhesive taped to the body or removed or the scout doesnt go.
  9. Just bringing forward for reference on the Body Piercing thread
  10. If B-P's sexual orientation is irrelevent to you, why first imply he was gay, provide flimsy references and then run like the devil away from them and say you realize that what you have doesnt prove a thing. I beleive having gays in boy scouts is not the worst thing that could happen, but to reach into the past and rely on innuendo and unproven claims does nothing to improve the argument. Oh and yeah, as a proper English gentleman of course he would express disdain for female nudity, it would not have been a "veddy' proper thing to slobber over a womans exposed ankle, let alone anything else.
  11. Ahhh, NJ, could you give some references that B-P was gay?
  12. Do you see a correlation in the shrinking number of volunteer hours and receiving a stern and rude lecture from a senior staff member? Instead of thanking you guys for being there and hanging in there during difficult times, the spliting of the District and all. You are there for training and get a lecture? Wonder why volunteers are down?
  13. Rooster, I didnt say you said 1812, Falwell said 1812 thats where the date came from. http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/14/Falwell.apology/ And the story of Ishmael http://www.execulink.com/~wblank/ishmael.htm
  14. Rooster, No I dont beleive God has blessed the United States. To say so means he has to have turned his back on others. I think he has blessed humanity with a world that has ample resources for everyone if we all get along. To beleive that the U.S. has God's protection totaly flies in the face of the concept of free will. I sing "God Bless America" with all the fervor I can muster, just as I am sure English Scouters sing "God Save the Queen". I pray for God's blessing just as a father of a family in Italy does. Do I think God favors the US over other countries? No I dont. I think God has placed us here on Earth as our test, to see if we merit eternal life with him. It is up to us and the rest of the world to get along during our sojourn here. To say that God has protected our country since 1812 is beyond my comprehension. How was that date arrived at? No foreign power has invaded us since then? What was the Mexican-American War? Again, what was Pearl Harbor, or dosent that count as only the lower 48 states are protected. The Aleutian islands of Alaska saw action duting WWII as well. Now, this may be what you are talking about, I thank God quite often that I was born in the United States, a country whose evolution (and I use that word very loosely) is quite unique in terms of history. But to say that God blessed the US and not Bolivia or any of the other countries that were settled by Europeans at that time I dont believe is reasonable. You know, the North American Continent was not exactly uninhabited when it was "discovered". Are we to beleive God allowed the United States to wipe out multiple exisitng civilizations because he wanted to bless us? Dont get me wrong, I love our country, I love God. I love the ideals our country stands for while realizing where we have come from and when we have come up short to them. I say this is the greatest country on earth, but I also remember that we are still refining the whole freedom thing, we haven't gotten it down yet, we are further along than anyone else but we have a long way to go. Why would God protect the US and Israel?, If I remember right, The God of Abraham is the same God Christians, Jews, and Muslims revere. Will God protect one faction who prays to him from another? Does this mean he loves one group more than the other? I cant reconcile this at all. The short sum of it is, God has blessed us all, its up to us to do the rest. Sometimes we do it well, sometimes we don't
  15. I have to ask the Jewish members of the forum, arent Menorahs a religious symbol?
  16. God has been protecting us since 1812? What was Gettysburg, Antietam, and the lot. What was the Alamo and the Mexican-American War? And finally what was Pearl Harbor? Where does the notion that the US is specifically blessed by God come from? God protected us but the heck with the French, Russians, et al? I find this a bit like the baseball player who crosses himself before he steps in the batters box, my father used to say that only helps if your good, especially when the pitcher crosses himself before taking the mound.
  17. First a discussion on how important elections are, and a question tossed to the troop, you guys did this, now how do you think it should be fixed?
  18. A whistle, to be used ONLY when you're lost (good luck, but an important part of a survival kit) A camp cup Interlocking set of flatware One Certidicate to get out of clean-sup duty ONCE in the year Light Sticks(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  19. http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/14/Falwell.apology/ I posted this on September 17, 2001, it still work (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  20. Is there anything different between a scout comming back at 17 and finishing Eagle after a two year absence or having a 15 year old make Eagle and stop comming forever? Make sure the requirements are done, just as they must be done for any scout, and welcome him back. If the troop cant see it clear to take him, help him find another troop he can transfer to. OGE Matt 18: 10-14 Luke 15: 11-32
  21. Hey now, I have Richard Nixon's on mine!!!
  22. Discussing something on this forum and seeing it in person is two different things. Gotta tell you , it was cold this weekend in Allentown. However, I think this forum is mature and intelligent enough to know that this sampling of behavior is not indicative of all Baptist behavior. I would not want anyone to think all Baptists have such an "in your face" mentality. I think its wrong to characterize an entire segment of a population based on a miniscule sampling.
  23. http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-b21_4westboro.2313216dec07.story Who are these guys?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
