Packsaddle, you want to return? You know you always have had that power, just click the heels of the ruby slippers together and repeat, "there's no place like home, there's no place like home, etc"

Is wine tasting an appropriate fundraiser?
OldGreyEagle replied to matuawarrior's topic in Unit Fundraising
Ok, I submit, As Annheiser-Busch also owns Eagle Snacks, perhaps BSA should just accept any legally earned money. I just hope no one is issued a DUI or is in an accident comming home from such a soiree Just a side note, would wine tasting be an acceptable fundraiser for MADD? -

Well Bob, I guess its OK when reasonable men (!, ? and sic!) disagree, while you write a lovely invitation, I still cant see it any more than if Hiram Smith was CEO Of RJ Reynolds and the activty was a cigar sampling (and the real interesting thing is, I do on occasion indulge in an adult beverage and smoke)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

I understand what you are saying Bob, but I just cant reconcile in my head a poster that reads "Wine Tasting Party" All Proceeds to benefit (Fill in the Blank) Area Council Boy Scouts of America (Insert BSA Logo Here) Charactor Counts! -
Twin_Wasp Sorry, I just couldnt let it bee. "A man has to know his limitations" spoken by Clint Eastwood as Detective Harry Calahan in the second dirty Harry movie "Magnum Force" which was the movie debut of Robert Urich. David Soul was also in this movie prior to Starsky and Hutch fame. (which one was he? Starsky or Hutch?) I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Age Restrictions on Power Tools
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Just to be sure I went over the Guide to Safe Scouting again, I still only see chainsaws and mechanical log splitters as the only "tool" a scout cant use. This "Eagle Board" who are they? If they are volunteer scouters functioning as part of the District's Advancement Commitee they have the power to approve and reject Eagle projects, but they cant rewrite BSA policy. Portable power screwdrivers are the only way many projects get done in a day without causing severe acute carpal tunnel syndrome and a multitude of palm blisters and a 12 year old with a 20 (or so) volt screwdriver can be no more dangerous than one with an ax,(which BSA willingly hands him, and rightly so) When I read statements such as "...our Council says..." I want to ask, who in Council? the scout executive? a district executive, a field director? a clerk? Somebody who answered the phone? or a volunteer scouter talking about how he/she wished scouting would be? What reference are you using? Saying "I've always heard ot said..." is a nice dodge, but only that, its not proof and its not policy. Now, to be safe, I would be sure any scout, or adult for that matter, who picks up a power tool gets "checked out" by the projects safety officer to establish competency on the device. It may be anything to establishing the saw belongs to the operator to watching the scout use the tool. Be sure eye protection is used as well as any other safety device specific to that tool. And then let the fun begin. As a teen I helped a few friends rebuild big block V-8's and we would routinely switch the rear end of a 68 Dodge Charger (440) from regular to an 4:11 axle and back again in a night. Beleive me, we didnt use manula tools but our fathers made sure we could use the power ones before they left us alone. -

"One Tin Soldier" Appropriate or Not?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Eammon, I was at the 2001 National Jamboree and was at that fireworks demonstration. With Lee Greenwoods "Proud to be an American" on the louspeakers and the pyrotechnics and the cheering scouts, it brought a tear to me eye. Later that year, on 9/11, tears again came to my eyes. Now I sit in my office, having just seen a statue of Saddam Hussein pulled down through a cooperate effort of US forces and Iraqis and again tears come to my eyes. -

Spats hops, Spats And dont tell me you are only 14, quick, who was the first president of the United States? Who started Boy Scouts? Who won the Civil/War Between the States/War of Northern Agression? The point is, you can learn history, make the old codgers proud, research it

"One Tin Soldier" Appropriate or Not?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
But as much fun as Billyjack was, The Trial of Billyjack and Billyjack goes to Washington was even more ponderous. Perhaps I just wanted to make the song and movie connect ::standing with right arm upraised, fist clenched:: Now, can anyone reconcile the song at the end of Kelly's Heroes "Burning Bridges" to the movie?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Hops, if your gonna wear white gloves (a very good choice BTW) then you need to wear white spats on those shiny black boots

"One Tin Soldier" Appropriate or Not?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I guess my reaction to the song was due to the mixed message of Billyjack. That of "we all need to live in peace or I'll kick the ever living daylights out of you" In the movie, who is the tin soldier? Billyjack? not a real nice way of labeling a hero as a tin soldier is not a very nice term. The deputy? How does that fit? The Sheriff? Who? Then the topic of the song, the story of the Mountain People and Valley Folk below, by itself might be a strong parable on the clash of material wealth versus peace but how does the refrain "... One tin soldier walks away..." relate? Which side was he on? Was he a spectator? What? Anyway, if you havent seen Billyjack you have to to get a true sense of the 60's. (look for Howard Hessman, he has to be like 19) -
Shirley, I asked why you were interested in it, being a scoutmaster is a perfect reason. (woman or man). I am our Districts Advancement Chair and I get a lot of calls from parents who are doing the legwork for their son's Eagle or the Eagle candidate who wants me to tell him what to write, word for word. I guess was too wary for my own good. I apologize if I offended you, it was not my intent. Welcome to the Forum, there are nice people around (no, really) and dedicated scouters. Here is another link your Life Scouts might find helpful: http://www.flash.net/~smithrc/eagleprj.htm (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

"One Tin Soldier" Appropriate or Not?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My current favorite misused song in an Ad Campaign is Wrangler using Credence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son" to sell blue jeans. It has wonderful guitar and a rocking beat, the complete first stanza and chorus is: Some folks are born made to wave the flag Yeah, the red, white, and blue When the band plays 'Hail To The Chief' Yeah, they'll point the cannon at you It ain't me, it ain't me I'm no millionaire's son It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one Not as Patriotic as you would think -
As camp season draws near, I think of a song that has become almost the anthem of our local Scout Camp. Its "One Tin Soldier" by Coven from the movie Billyjack. The first time I heard the camp sing this song during campwide Vespers I had to leave the Chapel area as I could hardly contain my laughter, obviously none of the "children", either staff or campers had ever seen the movie. So, for a different type of thread, have you ever been "cracked-up" by some tradition being solemnly followed by every one else? And for those who have seen Billyjack (I have it on DVD), is this a Vesper song?

To earn Ranger, a Venturer must plan, lead, and carry out a significant conservation project under the guidance of a natural resources professional amoungst many other things. Can you give me some ideas of what has qualified as a "significant" project?
