  1. There was a time when people who stood up for what they believed were respected for taking a stand against what they thought was wrong They may be wrong, lots of time they are, but that does not mitigate the respect they should get even if we think they are "wrong"(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  2. You can shour all you want, if you end up with an Eagle that can't tie knots, its a program thing
  3. I always thought the Board of Review was an opportunity for the Unit Committee to talk to a youth and see how the youth feels about the program and what aspects they like and which ones they think can be improved. The reason Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are not supposed to be on the Board is because we want the youth to evaluate the program being presented And to see how the scout feels about his experience
  4. No, I don't understand At least I don't understand a scout not knowing his knots because of something National does If he has an opportunity to use the skills, then he will
  5. so this is where program comes in and it seems to be routinely ignored. We talk abour the horrors of an Eagle who can't tie a square knot like its his fault. He learns the knot and then its the duty of the unit's program to give him oppturnities to tie knots and teach and use them Way back when I earned Eagle, First Class had a requirement to learn either semaphore or morse code. I learned it, passed the requirement and moved on. I can tie any of the knots you need for first class, morse code? Not so much, although I can do SOS if pressed If you dont use it, you lose it
  6. You have to be a Crew to work towards Venturing awards, shoot pistols, hunt, have girls... and thats about it...
  7. I remember back when I was a Radiology Manager in the Hospital. Equipment acquisition was always expensive and equipment changed rapidly. I remember a discussion where it was determined that the best way to stay ahead of technology and changes was to always be contemplating a change. Yeah, we are looking at the ABC Zip Scanner and will move to buy one next quarter. Then next quarter, you know, the ABC Zip Scanner II looks good, we should see how its recevied. You could always be on the cutting edge as long as you were looking, but at some point you have to buy and understand the climate will change before the equipment gets installed. Before the first scan was done on the ABC Zippier Scanner we got, it was outdated by the ABC Zippiest Scanner B. Not that the one we had wasnt good, just not the lastest. Any video starts to age as soon as its recorded. The video "This is Scouting" in the MyScouting section is fairly old, the first young lady who speaks in it was in the Crew I served. She is now a Field Director for Cradle of Liberty COuncil, that video was made when she was Northeast Region Venturing President. I hope it stays around for a very long time. If there was a rush to replace Lyin' Lance would we hear screams and gnashing of teeth from the usual suspects about how wasteful of resources it is to replace the video, that a short discussion before airing about the consequences of actions would be more poweful? I thught the reason that NYLT, and Wood badge and other BSA programs used Video's and Powerpoints because they (National) wants the exact same information presented on a Nation wide basis and the best way is to send that information recorded. We have all seen horror stories of people "Tweaking" presentations to outright rewrting curriculums to fit a personal agenda. Either we say all training committees can expertly present the information as written, or we use recordings, I am not sure what else can be done(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)
  8. When I saw Scoutmaster replaced with Unit Leader and troop replaced with unit I figured that BSA was realizing that Venturing Crews have an Advisor, and Varsity Scout Teams have a Coach and Sea Scout Ships have Skippers. Rather than inject all those phrases, I can see where they would say Unit Leader and Unit
  9. "We're talking about a country that is the ultimate democracy." Actually we are a Republic, perhaps semantical, but I had to say it
  10. Heck, two weeks ago I was doing Youth Protection for Venturing for the NYLT staff, I like the video on Internet safety although I keep telling the youth instead of Blog, think Facebook page. I am not sure many were sold on being careful on the internet, now we have Catfishing and T'eoed You do the best with what you got, what else is there?
  11. bnelon, thank you for your efforts, I appreciate them
  12. OMFG The F is freaking, right? I would hate to have people get the wrong idea about scouters
  13. Yeah pack, I know about the beatings received by those to listened to their parents as I was beat many times. Once because I believed my father when he said the best way to show up a bully was to punch him in the nose, he did forget to mention he might punch back, repeatedly, daily
  14. "The one where you take Luke's laser away, and replace it with leadership skills and ethical choices? " I am pretty sure the Jedi believed in Servant Leadership and the Jedi respected Life, in any form
  15. The best part of the forum experience is to realize how different everything is for others In my neighborhood, all the dads had guns, I knew where my fathers shotgun was and where the 30-06 was and where the shells were kept as did the other kidsfor the guns in their homes. THis is suburban CHicago, we didnt shoot each other although we saw people shot every night (I forgot to mention Combat) So, if people could mail order guns then, and today we have so many more gun control laws and the feeling is access to guns is greater now than ever WHat did the gun control laws accomplish?
  16. So, in one of the recent threads I stated our Society is so violent because of movies and video games. Then this past Saturday morning I was looking through the myriad of "new" cable channels that deal mostly in old black and white TV shows and other shows from the 60's. In no order, I remembered Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel. Tombstone Territory, Texas Rangers, The Rifleman, Bonanza, The Rebel, Branded, Yancy Deringer, Maverick, The Lone Ranger, Wagon Train Cheyenne, Daniel Boone, Rawhide, Wild Wild West Kung Fu, etc I figure with just a few hours of viewing a night, if that, I saw plenty of people shot dead and many arguments settled with bullets. So why were there very few shootings back then? There were semi-automatic shotguns, there were pistols, why so many more shootings now? That was before any type of gun control, didnt Lee Harvey Oswald get his rifle by mail order? I was wrong, entertainment wise we were much more violent then Why were not schools and offices riddled with bullets then, what has changed?
  17. So, JoeBob, what is the answer? Have staff pay less or nothing and have the participants pay for staff when people are yelling bloody murder about the already exorbitant cost (and they may have a point/) This Jamboree is going to be an adventure, it could be a total unmititagated diasaster or it could be fine, likely it will fall somewhere in between If we go in expecting a disaster, yeah, a disaster will occur, if you are postive, the experience will be more likely positive. What do I think will happen? I don't know, thats why I am going.
  18. I have to admit to being a little confused, it was not all that long ago the Forum was up in arms at the wimplification of scouting. Of how easy BSA was making things. Philmont was taken to task for its "sidewalk wide" trails and the lack of necessity of scouting skills. I thought the Sumitt was decried for its "Disneyland" approach to scouting and now we have upset people because that will not be so? Yes, the first time at the Summitt will not be for the faint hearted. It will be a rugged experience that will live on long after the "canned" experiences of AP HIll have faded. 50 years from now, Youth can say, the Jamboree at the SUmmitt? Let me tell you about the first one, cause I was there. That doesnt happen often, its an experience I look forward to with much anticipation
  19. If Baden-Powell initiated the Boy Scout program to teach youth such a flippant attitude to human life, then perhaps its a good thing it's being erradicated(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  20. Well no, not these people, certainly not these people, other people, the kind that don't shoot people by accident...
  21. I am no stranger to hyperbole, but equating the end of patrol overnights without adults to the murder of a human is not scoutlike
  22. I find it unfathomable to equate the the person who caused the end of a humans life to the person who ended patrol overnights And that is if this guy did indeed end patrol overnights,I'll Kudus' word on it And if you check, I was against ending Patrol Ovenights without adults
  23. Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy F.Scott Fitzgerald
  24. Not that I know, but is there not a private, not for profit group that helps people who have as there guiding principle the protecion of American Civil Liberties? Have there not been lawsuits filed to test the constitutionality of these measures?
  25. The "Commonwealth" sits on top of the Pennsylvania State Capitol, but that's in Harrisburg, quite a hike from Philadelphia, did you mean the statue of Billy Penn on top of the Philadelphia City Hall?
