  1. Oops, Found the answer myself, nothing to see here, move along, move along(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  2. I think we have run over this one before, but a Girl (under 18) cannot be a member of the OA, to be a member of the OA, you must be at least a first class scout,(amoung other things as well) something only males can do.
  3. "If the world continues on its present course, some day when your neighbor is complaining about the leaves from your maple tree and you tell him, "Blow it out your a**," you may be charged with a sex crime." As yet, in my corner of the world, while this epithet is not yet a sex crime, it is indeed most unscoutlike, and such vulgarity would be seen for what it is, the expression of a crude, ignorant vestige of a human who can only express himself in the most base manner.
  4. Well, with pushy parents or with a well motivated inner directed scout, making first class in a year isnt supposed to be hard. Especially if the scout is in a really "happenin" troop, one that follows that there First Class First Year Program. Ah, the active, boy led program, if you build it they will come, and advance to boot!
  5. SMT376Richmond KY, You did the right thing.
  6. As has been discussed, a scout could go from "scout" to first class in 30 days, the thirty days between physical measurements for tenderfoot being the time restriction, it would be tight, but it "could" be done. From First Class to Star the scout must be in a position of responsibility for 4 months, Star to Life, 6 months and Life to Eagle 6 months. An Eagle could be earned in 17 months. If the boy is 10 years, six months, then Eagle is possible at 11 years, 11 months (hope the math is right, I hate working in a base 12 system, or a base 10 for that matter) (Note, the above describes a possibility, it does not imply good, bad, whatever, only the possibility)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. Acco40, That was Shakespeare, in Hamlet, in the soliquoy Polonius Advice to Laertes "Neither a lender or borrower be, for loan oft loses both itself and friend. And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry." Just trying to keep it real.
  8. Perhaps what could have happened is the next day Eamonn calls the Council Scout Executive, explains the situation, tells him what happened to place Eamonn in that position and what was done. Then the Scout Executive would question the scout, find out what one heck of a guy Eamonn is ( as we already know) and the matter is closed. Part of the Scout Executives "duty" would be to assure the troop in quesiton has a procedure in place to never allow this to happen again. I think we all agree the right thing was done, now its time to document(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  9. Wow Ed, resorting to name caling, From the Scoutmaster's Handbook, Chapter 2 The methods of Scouting, Method 2- The Patrol Method "...The Boys themselves elect their patrol leader, divide up the jobs to be done..." So while "a" patrol method was used, "THE" patrol method was not. Just back from summer camp and have many ways to deleiver the program, not all very good.
  10. Lived in Alton from 85 to 94, thorugh the big flood
  11. If the Eagle Candidate cant tie a square knot, I can see that as a problem, a problem that relects poorly on the whole troop. How could a scout get this far in the program and knot know how to tie a square not? After being a troop leader for at least 16 months, you would think he would have had to teach the knots a few times. Running the boy through scout skills during a scoutmaster conference is wrong. In the BSA Publication "Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures, 33088D printed in 2002, on page 25 its says this under the heading of Scoutmaster Conferences "One of the most enjoyable experiences of being a Scoutmaster is the opportunity for a Scout and his leader to sit down and visit together. In large troops, Scoutmasters occasionally assign this responsibility to assistant scoutmasters or members of the troop commitee; but this is unfortunate because most Scoutmasters feel that this is truly the opportunity to get to know the scout and help him chart his course in life. A good conference should be unhurried. It helps the scout evaluate his accomplishments and set new goals with his scoutmaster. The can be accomplsihed at a troop meeting, camping trip, or in the scout's home. Goal setting by the scout makes it possible for the scoutmaster to help the scout with his weaknesses and encourage him to use his strengths. The Scout (joining) conference is probably one of the most important associations the scout will have in his scouting career. It is at this conference that the scoutmaster illustrates to him the adult to youth relationship that is unique to scouting. All through the ranks, it is rewarding for the scoutmaster to observe the scout grow in responsibility and maturity. It is through this associaiton and example that a young man grows and matures and the scoutmaster conference accomplishes that aim (See scoutmaster Handbook Capter 10)" It dont say nothin' about no 4 on 1 gang up on the boy for 2 or more hours, it dont mention tieing knots or taking a compass reading, it not a final exam. If a troop has to be sure that its members are ready for Eagle by a full requirements review, then they need to review the troops program because that is one seriously flawed instrument.
  12. Why Mark, are you saying this thread is for the birds? Rooster, as one aviarian to another, welcome your offspring to the Aerie for me. I can see why you are strutting like the Cock of the walk for sure

  14. Speaking of Philadelphia, it looks like a lot of forum members lives around there or are close. What about a week end event, we can show off our best Dutch oven treat, sit around a campfire and actually see each other. What about a camp out? Suggesitons about locations? BTW, I off to camp tomorrow so I will look in on this again on the 19th
  15. ho boy, can I relate... A massive thunderstorm blew through the neighborhood on June 21. A lightening strike on a nearby telephone pole wiped out power for a few days and fried the control panel of our A/C unit. Wasnt fixed until July 9th. Apparently the A/C unit is as Old and Grey as this Eagle is and the part was hard to find. Well, in those weeks it got really hot and humid around here and the family had to adopt. I will tell you I dont know how life was done without A/C, actually I do know, it was done slower thats for sure. Towards the end, I could tell the difference between 90 and 98 degree weather. Humans do adopt. I grew up around Chicago, when I was living in St Louis it would be 15 degrees out and people would say it was "bone chilling" heck, I would say, Bone chilling has to be 5 below at least. Had an old friend who said the coldest he ever was was in Los Angelos. He had spent 6 months in Vietnam and was flown back state side in a single day. On monday he was in rice paddies and at 9 pm tuesday night he was on the runway at LAX. Seems the temperature got all the way down to 60 degrees that night, he says he almost froze.
  16. questioning, Howard, take a look at Topic: from the desk of a pompous, arrogant, pedantic, closeminded bookthumper and you will see that Bob White isnt running from you or afraid of anything you say. His current policy is to reply by private message, it isnt unique to you.

  20. You know Fog, you are right, we are a bunch of people you dont know, most likely will never meett and some of us may not exist. But your statement on this matter does beg the question if this is how you feel about us, why say "And do you want to know something else, other people here agree with me" Since that post, no one has taken your side, the response is all for Bob White. You may get a few people to agree with you, but I predict a landslide for Bob White. So, continue to post, continue to set the example to the youth who read these pages on how adults are not supposed to act, and be well. But I would stop telling Bob how other people think unless you know them and they are willing to step up and make their views known. or not, either way, God Bless.
  21. Holy Ecumenical Failure Batman, you guys are supposed to just sing along and not fight over who gets the royalty check! LOL BTW, packsaddle, my physician said I was Presbyoptic, and I said no, I am catholic.
