  1. CRANEACE Still waiting for who us and we are
  2. Hops, in the parts of our country where people fly the Stars and Bars over Old Glory, it just may be the Sheriff's house that we are talking about, or the mayor, or the county chairman, you get the idea?
  3. I am not sure I am up to speed on all the forms of leadership, but before anyone gives any information, wouldnt it be nice to know just who it is that is receiving the info? And you are correct, we dont know what's going on, so we should do what? Blindly trust you? Homey dont play that tune
  4. Will be doing Powdwehorn on Sept 112, 13, and 14 and then Sept 19, 20 and 21. Will let you know what I think.

  8. I slept in the same tent as my son til he was way past first class, did the Dad, give any reason ?
  9. Open question, why was the OA Tapout changed to a Callout, why did that change?
  10. I have been thinking about this, what if a scout tranfers to the troop, from out of state, just moved to the area. He registers with the troop, and introduces his mother, Course Director for Woodbadge for the 21rst Century, Silver Beaver recipient, and a through hiker on the Appalachian Trail. Would the boys still consider her just a mom? Ok, an extreme case, but if a woman registers to be a leader, is trained, she cant come on the trip? Just a Mom who reads there are no closed organizations in Boy Scouts and wants to do the white water trip cuz it just might be fun? Fun times, where do these boys get such outdated notions, looking squarely at certain forum members and you know who you are
  11. There have been numerous threads here about scouts with disabilities, I suggest you do a forum search on the term disability and go to, I was going to refresh a few threads, but they are so numerous and each one has its own value, enjoy!
  12. Yes indeed the crew I work with is Co-ed. Yes, certainly we ALWAYS have a female adult along with us on backpacking trip. We dont have a female advisor but all overnight trips, backpacking or otherwise dont happen unless we have an over 21 female with us. It could be worth charging admission to have you ask our ladies if they can manage backpacking, especially the one who was the Scoutcraft Director at our Summercamp or the one who is very involved in OA (Outdoors Action, dont have a stroke arrowmen). Dont question the heart, will and strenth of the female. That would be a grave error. (this last one said in jest, I made the mistake of making a condescending remark about the ladies bringing "Powerpuff Girls" sleeping bags on an outing. The scars have just about faded)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  13. A research paper? Does that mean it will include a bibliography? How does three stories of Boy Scout leader malfeasance by OldGreyEagle of Scouter.Com give your paper any more credibility than if you used Jayson Blair as a source? You recently posted here regarding a scout whose Eagle was taken away under murky circumstances, you were supposed to call Irving and get a straight story, what did you find out? Where you doing research then and didnt tell us for some reason, or is this a new project? Before I lend a sharpening stone, I would like to know why the axe needs to be ground
  14. Interesting, in what way did you show leadership? During the blood drive, did you direct the nurses on proper venipuncture technique? Did you direct the setting up of the screening, blood draw, and resting areas? I realize you had to oraganize a place, did other scouts assist you? How many hours did other people besides yourself and the blood bank people put in the project? Just wondering how it all worked is all
  15. What did the Parol Leaders say? The other member's of the PLC? Why dont they want Mom's along? I am so torn, the boy run troop theory is the boys decide, I wanna tell them to shut up and let the mom's come along once a year, but that would be directive leadership and this is not the place for it, right Ed? It does show why events need to come from the PLC up, to pervent these situations, I cant wait to see some reactions.
  16. Laughing at yourself because you have made an error is one thing, being laughed at because you didnt know enough to get out of the way is humilitation. Your good natured ribbing, as you call it, may be as hurtful as can be to another person. And such seemingly harmless things can escalate, as what happened in your troop with the tape. Its not unusual to have kids add another measure, things adults dont know about. OK, you dont think snipe hunting is bad, and I know there is nothing I can do to stop you, I hope you never scar a kid or turn him off to scouting. Have fun
  17. Whats so great about folksongs is everyone has a different twist: Oh Mister Moon, moon, bright and silvery moon Wont you please shine down on me. Oh Mister Moon, moon, bright and silvery moon Hiding behind that tree. Cant you see the man with the big shotgun. Hes gonna shoot you if you start to run. Oh Mister Moon, moon, bright and silvery moon, Wont you please shine down on, talk about about your shining Wont you please shine down on me
  18. Progress, aint it grand?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  19. Try http://www.horseshoetrail.org/powderhorn.html the "official" BSA Powderhorn page www.powderhorn-bsa.org isnt working as of this time, maybe it will work later (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  20. We try to do Backpacking once a quarter, with Venture age kids, its tough to set a good date. We have to schedule and go with who can make it. Indoor climbing is the most frequent activity and out door climbing (once) the most talked about. Trouble is, out door climbing is time consuming and expensive and there isnt a lot to do when every one waits to take a turn. We have had lick with Crews in our council taking turns sponsoring activities, such as the Cardboard Boat race, or a Rendezvous planned by Council. As far as what will bring kids to the crew, what does your crew say? What do they want to do ?
  21. I was an innocent, naive scout. I went on a snipe hunt. Yes, I knew about "snipe hunts" but I also knew that a snipe is a real bird and the older scouts and adults lead me to beleive we were in an area where they actually lived. And yes, I stayed out until dawn. Humiliation and despair are not strong enough words to describe my feelings. I was madder at myself for falling for it than anything else. Then at the very next campout, the SPL sent me out for the Cannon Report, theoretically the camp newspaper, actually just the sound the cannon made. I spent 2 hours going camp to camp before some kindly scoutmaster replied when I told him what I was looking for, son, have you ever been on a snipe hunt? I nearly fainted. I didnt want to go back to the troop. I waited until 1am. In the morning I was asked if I saw any Snipe while looking for the cannon report. That was the end of that, I refused any request to do anything until I was sure it wasnt just another ruse. I never trusted another older scout for as long as I was in the troop and I made Eagle, not because of the harrassment, but despite it. It didnt teach me a thing except I was a stupid naive child in the company of wolves. I told my dad and mother what had happened and they said what do want us to do. I knew having Mommy and Daddy complain would make the situation worse, so I said, dont do anything. But I resolved that I would prevent any kid from going through what I did. I would talk to the new scouts, tell them the tricks that would be pulled. They saw "jokes" attempted and because I had warned them, they werent caught. I eventually made SPL because the kids knew I wouldnt abuse them and looked out for them. I do the same thing now. So yes, I spent a night all by myself because I was stupid and naive, I spent a night looking for the cannon report, what did it get me? Totally untrusing of anything an older scout said until I was sure it wasnt a set up, distrust of authority and generally not happy. Sorry if you guys think it was funny
