New Scoutmaster Interview Questions
OldGreyEagle replied to pixiewife's topic in Open Discussion - Program
It would be a veritable travesty not to acknowledge shortridge's allusion to quite possibly the finest cinematic endeavor ever created about the finest fictional scoutmaster ever imagined -
Is BSA Too Risk Adverse? Scouts Canada sure isn’t.
OldGreyEagle replied to mmhardy's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Lets see, someone could call up my DE this morning and tell her that they are a Church that wants to Charter a Troop and they will be bringing over the IH and COR this afternoon to sign the papers and be a troop and take the troop on a 50 mile hike this Saturday and nobody HAS to be trained in anything other thna possibly youth protection and you think the BSA is risk adverse? -
if irritating one forum member was my criteria for locking and deleting threads, well, you guys finish that thought yourselves...

The Gay and Atheist thing is not in the Guide to Safe Scouting, never was... If you do not like the way the Troop or BSA is run, you are welcome to join and help change to the better -
The purpose should determine the method

"... and kindred virtues" I always saw the above as akin to Job Descriptions that end with "Other duties as assigned" -
Interesting, particularly in lieu of comments on here
OldGreyEagle replied to skeptic's topic in Open Discussion - Program
C'mon Skeptic, having a Chief Scout Executive that backs the "outing" in Scouting program would be anathema to the supposed status quo and force many people to alter their rock solid belief only they are the true guardians of scouting in the US. -

Can somebody point out to me where it says the Bold print in the G2SS is Policy? I know there are things in Bold Print in the G2SS, I just dont think Bold=Policy, that got changed a few revisions ago -
When I was in Las Vegas this past month, I did think of getting a Fleur de Lis tattoo behind my knee, it would be something that both Pierre and I could use
-
Just a thought, he is out of shape and I understand from what you post your physical conditioning could be improved, why don't you help him out by going with him on all condiitoning hikes and the 5 10's and 20? The worst that can happen is you both will improve physical condiitoning and you may even deepen your step-Dad relationship with him

December 29, 1963 A Watershed moment

Hey, watch that crazy Polish guy talk, although to be accurate, krazy Polska would be better. Did I ever tell you about the Christmas Eve when I learned how Czernina was made? -

Of course Bob Kuechenberg was Rudy Kuechenberg's brother, Rudy played linebacker for the Bears. I always thought Yaro Yepremian was the original "I keek Touchdown" foreign born Place kicker. For a Cypriot tie painter, he did not do too badly, except for that pass of course When I lived in Evansville Indiana, Hometown of Bob Griese I lived in an aprtment complex he owned. His brother ran the place and looked just like him -

hey, the Bears and Pariots are the only two franchises (thus far) to go 18-1 for a season. Of course, where the one falls is of huge consequence -
Time passes so slowly when we are young, long hot summers and even longer interminable bitterly cold winters (read Chicago) and we grow into the people we are today. Sports has always been a favorite of mine and today is the 48th anniversary of when I became an official Chicago Bears fan. I loved football, mostly because when I was growing up the longest my father would sit still was when football was on TV, especially the Bears. It was December 29, 1963. The Bears had had a good season finished first in their division and as far as I knew, the season was over (Playoffs? Don't talk to me about playoffs. playoffs are you kidding me?) I was 10 years old. My father had to work that Sunday and it was a long cold dark day. He comes home from work and wants to know why I am not listening to the Bears game on the radio. (Back then, home games were blacked out in the local media market, even NFL Championship games). I said oh Dad, the Bears aren't playing today, the season is over. No, he says, they are playing right now against the hated New York Giants, its the NFL Championship game. I was 10 and didnt know from playoffs, championship games, none of that stuff. I figured Dad was teasing me and I wouldnt let him win. For 20 minutes he kept telling me I was missing the Bears in the Championship game and I wouldnt beleive him. Finally I said, OK, I will turn on the radio if that will make you happy. I turned on WGN, the Bears radio station at the time and heard Jack Brickhouse (I think) say. "And thats the story from Beautiful Wrigley Field, Chicago Bears 14 the New York Giants 10" and then commercials. I had missed it, missed it all. I solemnly swore with all the fervor a 10 year old boy can muster to my father that I would never, ever miss another Chicago Bear Championship game. Of course, at the time, on December 29, 1963, I didnt realize the Bears would not be in another Championship game until January 26, 1986, the 20th Superbowl and I would be holding my 6 month old son for most of it. So, in 48 years I have not missed another Bears Championship game as I also suffrerd through the game on February 4, 2007. The way things are going, I don't see myself putting my streak on the line anytime soon but as this years NFL regular season fades away, I can't help but murmur to myself Bear Down Chicago Bears Make Every Play Clear the Way to Victory Bear Down Chicago Bears... What can I say, I am a fan...(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

See, the reason I don't do "OA" is because where I live, the OA is populated by people who think because they are "OA" they are somehow better than the rest of us, and OMG, if you are Vigil, then nothing emanating from you stinks. I thought National did away with the border design because of the attitude that OA was all about what level you were, Vigil above all, Brotherhood above Ordeal and poor Ordeal members were just lucky to be allowed to hag out with the other groups. I was willing to say that since all scouting is local, that the attitudes that I have seen were just a local aberration but now I am not sure. I don't know how to make somehting better when an elitist attitude is where you start
-
So your youth came up with a way to cancel out the most accepted and universally known symbol of the OA, the Lodge flap, and you want to know how to better market the OA? Has anyone explained the backward stance of not having Ordeal Lodge Flaps? I think this qualifies as Boy Lead Into the Ground

I always thought one didnot wear an OA sash unless it was an OA event, the way you know one is a member is because they wear the lodge flap. If your lodge doesnt have a Lodge Flap, would not the best next step be to have one? (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Ah, memories of Tapouts past... The first year I was eligible, I was tense. The troop stood in a circle The Chief circled around behind us, stood behind me, my breath came quickly, and the drum beating stopped. Then he moved on and the drum started beating again. A scout was "tapped out" the Chief stopped behind him, the drum stopped. Three time the Chief's arm swung high in the air and came down on the shoulder of the boy and then he was pushed, well pushed is a relative term as anyone who has ever played "Two Hand Touch" Football can attest. Some games I have participated in were more like "two hand assault and battery" but I digress. Oh, yeah, the force the boy was pushed with was more grand than any any of the "touch" football games I was in into the center of the circle Three times the Chief's arm came down on a candidate none of the time was I selected. Two other times the Chief stood behind boys, the drum stopped and then he moved on Year two was pretty much the same scenario. The Chief stood behind me and the drum stopped and then he moved on. Three boys were selected. I was not Year Three the Chief stopped behind me, the drum stopped. The Chief moved on, on the second time around he stopped, I finally felt the three slugs of the arm slammin on my shoulder. I was shoved into the center of the circle. I was to be an ordeal candidate. I went through the ordeal. I became a member. I was treated like crap at my first meeting and I never went back. Heck, now that I relived that experience, I understand Basement Dwellers reaction to Wood Badge, after all the buildup and expectation, the absolute experince was so devoid of anything I had be told that I felt like one of the villages at the first performamce of The Royal Nonesuch. I felt sold and no experience with the OA has lead me to beleive I had a singular experience
-
On further review... Perhaps what other people beleive and say and do has very little to do with my understanding of God and I should not worry about what other people say and do. I need only respect their beliefs and hold to my own. If we had a society where everyone respected each other enough to allow them to live the life they wished, as long as it did not harm others (of course)perhaps we would be closer to Thomas Moore's Utopia than ever Its a thought NAhhhhhhhhhh
-
Heck I am with BD Just that the next time a scout comes to you and tells you of a challenge he faces and says its unfair and says he is not being treated with respect you can always say, I know exactly how you feel the same thing happened to me. And when the scout says what did you do? You answer, oh, I gave up, it wasnt worth it Inflammatory yes, but to make a point I hope is realized

I know how much we love entymology and I have a thought. There are very few people, comparatively speaking, who actually celebrate Christmas. Our society as a whole uses lots of expressions that are contractions of phrases. The standard Good-Bye originally came from the expression "May God Bless You", Most people realize the symbol of the season Santa Claus came from Saint Nicholas. Heck, even the term Bedlam comes to us as a contraction of Bethlehem Royal Hospital. So, we look at Christmas. Originally it was Christ's Mass, celebrated on the day we honor the birth of Jesus. I get a hoot when I hear people say "Keep Christ in Christmas" when they are only talking about the first word in the phrase. I say keep the Mass in Christmas and unless you intend on being at Mass on Dec 25, don't be saying Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays is much more truthful. You can celebrate Christ's birth, just don't call it Christmas, unless you attend Mass. PS. Still in the Vulgate, not back to Latin as yet

Before we accept or support a "Bad Habit", one should probably look into who gets to decide what constitutes a "bad" Habit in the first place and how much/little we have in common with them(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
