Sounds like an active group Jim, what age ranges are in your group?

If a Venturing Crew member cannot be a member of the OA, (although certainly a scout who is in the OA can be a member of a Venturing Crew), why would he want to wear an OA sash with a Venture shirt? OA is a Boy Scout program, the youth is a member of the OA because his TROOP elected him, why wouldnt he proudly wear his Boy Scout Uniform? Otherwise, if its not addressed in the Insignia Guide, wear it

OK, now, this is serious NWSscouter, I am about to ask a very very very serious question. The Pickled Herring, in wine or cream sauce? The answer will indelibly mark you in my book

I think part of the problem is the length of the time committment of Cub and Boy Scouts. A Soccer season is just that, a season, a couple months of high intensity activity, scouting is a year (well almost for some cub packs) long acivity. And while some advancement in Cubs is age based, many other recognitions are merit based. In Boy Scouts all advancement is merit based, if you dont do it, you get left behing, not so in sports where age groups advance automatically. Scouting is a marathon, its not a sprint, thats what makes it the program it is. Now, I see the above as strengths of the scouting program, an antidote to the instant gratification generation, you cant earn all the belt loops in a month, you cant do Eagle in a year, it takes time and a dedication to a goal that is seeminly far off. Thats why Eagle is regarded highly, it shows the ability to set a long term goal and achieve it, something very difficult for todays adolescents. To ease the situation pack330 is talking about, the families need to be oriented to the program when they join. Scouting isnt just a couple hours and month and a week during the summer. That may be the physical time committement, but the scotuing program is the effects on family life and the youth's charactor development and self image. And that takes time, which may be a concept not readily grasped in the beginning. Lastly, Sports Leagues tend to be very well organized and parents know I drop off at 6:30 and pick ip at 8 and all is taken care of. In Scouting, since we go year round, we just might ask you to help us out at times, something a sports league doesnt do, or if it does, the parent knows the season will be over in a few months while there is no end to the scouting trail Anyway, just a few thoughts

Rooster, a "Slider" is a name ascribed to that gastronomical delight, a White Castle burger. The term "slider" comes from the somewhat accelerated manner in which the delicacy transits the gastrointestinal tract, to some it just seems to "slide" through. Somewhat akin to the phrase, "You can't buy beer, you can only rent it", or so I am told, I have no personal knowledge of that in any manner.

I agree with Trucker, ain't no eatin' better than a Chicago style pizza, especially if its a Nancy's stuffed. Now, you guys who live south of the Mason-Dixon line help me out, just what is the deal with sweet iced tea anyway? When I am down south I can get a glass that stands the spoon up by itself. Oh, and I religiously love the outdoors and worship Ra everytime I see him, and during this past summer, it really wasnt all that much.

I say there, sometimes you have the answer roaming in a thread, why not a Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail? Each of the patrols gets a task, clear this section of the woods and make a tower, another patrol has to make a catapault (or trebucher, I forget the differences). Maybe each patrol makes a catapault with the Senior Boy Leadership making an observation tower to see which patrol catapault can throw the cow farther, or perhaps make the trojan rabbit? All these ideas need lashing type skills and you say you have the resources, encourage them all to speak in poor english accents (glad Eammon isnt here for this) they can act out their favorite scenes and the meals can have a medeval flair, utensiless cooking, roast a pig over an open fire, something. Bug juice becomes mead, The scouts address everyone as Sire, or m'lord. I could on and on, but I am sure you will get plenty of ideas On sunday, have a scouts own service focused on the many natural resources we in the united states enjoy. You will be in a farmers field, from the food he grows (Waving fields of grain, to scenic wonders the purple mountains majesty) AND remind them, its not really OUR land, we are just the caretakers for the next generation(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

All this talk about downstate Illinois has me remenescing(sp?) thinking about the past even. Does this trail go close to Rosiclare? or Hardin? Elizabethtown or Cave-in-rock? What about Giant City? I used to hang out around all those places and Makanda

hey, who says they dont like arguing semantics? Isnt that like making an antisemantical remark? And normally while I make a point to eschew obfuscation the paramount objective is to understand that rhetoric is not always rhetorical and may actually comprehensively define the situation

Snookums??? Sweetie??? Is there a hazing argument that could be found here? Oh wait, we have beat that dog already and I AM NOT going to start up again here. -
Yeah, One week from today I start Powderhorning, although some of my crew werent really sure that was a word. I look forwad to it with excitement, fear, and wonder, heck its almost like Christmas.

Sorry Pounder, I was just reiterating a thought from a past thread. Our group hasnt pushed for many Awards, we have 6 bronze awardee's in our Crew but dont have anybody close to Ranger. While we are what I think pretty active, earning awards isn't what this Crew wants to do. Overtime with new members that will probably change.
-
I think comparing the Eagle Rank with the Ranger award is sorta like comparing the Girl Scout Gold award to the Eagle Rank, I dont think you can do it, they are separate programs with many similarites and differences. I think anyone who receives an Eagle, or Ranger, or Gold should be congratulated on their accomplishment. (yeah, I know, but November 2004 is comming and you never know, if arnold can be governor of Caly-Fornia, I have a shot at president, dont I?)

Hey, do you know how much restraint I had to use not to refer to us two brothers as two WILD AND CRAZY GUYS ::twisting shoulders in appropriate manner:: BTW, My oldest brother's name is Mark, isnt this like the Lincoln/Kennedy thing?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Hey, I dont care if either wins or loses, as long as neither "Comes out of the closet" during one of the shows. And be honest, how many of you were/are thinking the same thing?

Dang, purported father from The Forks, Maine and supposed mother from Chicago. Probably not related, just two REALLY KEWL, happening guys who are down with their bad selves in a really groovy and far out way

::muttering to self:: The problem is, as convoluted as FOG's argument is, I can follow it and agree with it. One of the barriers I have faced with our Venture Crew is lack of female leadership. We have three adult males who go on virtually every outing but we have a devil of a time finding adult women. The rules say we must have an adult (over 21) female with us on overnights. It would be a total breach of YP if we didnt have an adult female. Why? What does the prescence of the adult female guarantee? The only issue is, how would BSA verify a males, or females for that matter heterosexuality? -
Unless of course this is one of those experiments where they say they are testing for one thing and atually are looking at another. Perhaps the sudden appearance of CRANEACE and related questions isnt as much an attempt to gather information on the quesitons posed, but rather a study of how the group reacted? Were we hostile, suspicious, pliant, trusting, paranoid (who me? yeah you, ok voices 1-7 settle down, its number 8's turn to use the computer) Its a thought

Hey, he "only" has one earring and his hair, while perhaps spiked, is still its natural color. One more item of note, he is entering his senior f high school and has filed papers to remain 5 years in high school. His guidance counselor says he should graduate this year, but my son says he is not ready so we are going to red shirt him a year. -
Where did you grow up again? Could we have been separated at birth? I have always hoped a roving band of gypsies grabbed me as an infant, that way I could understand my family a whole lot better, LOL
-
Mom, there are a few websites the Crew members could check out concerning the Ranger Electives. I know this is difficult in advising a Venture Crew, but don't get in the habit of doing to much research especially when it could be done by Crew members. Some things the kids can do , others they cant, but always let them try first. If you have already done that, have at it
