Ad, I dont appreciate people who presume to know how I act and how I think. You know nothing about me or how the troop operates and how much work all the scouters put in to allow the best possible opprotunities for every scout to advance. I object to your characterizations

I wont, I promise I wont

Hops, As you might know, I used to work in an Xray Dept. I remember holding an 18 year old cyclist's head while he convulsed as the Emergency Doc intubated him, feeling the bones of his skull shift and watching brain tissue ooze from his ears. He was "lucky", he didnt die. He is a quadraplegic, he lies flat on his back and then once a day the nurses at the home where he lives flip him over to his belly. He has a hole cut out of the bed so he can look down at a mirror that reflcts the TV screen. Every 12 hours he gets flipped, its all the motion he will ever know. He made his choice, to ride without a helmet, and now he has a lot of time to contemplate it.

Hey Hops, I am going to go the way of FOG here, hope you dont mind. Why do you wear a football helmet? You know you hit with your shoulders, you dont lead with your head? So why wear a helmet, shoulder pads and every thing else? When you were a catcher, did you always wear a mask and helmet? Chest protector? Shin guards ? and of course the most important protective equipment of all. You were a good catcher, why did you need all that stuff on?

"use a bandsaw, drill press, air brush and a host of hand tools" Holy Cow TwoCubDad, I thought I was sophisticated when my son and I used an Xacto knife and Quadruple 0000 steel wool. Never won, but we had fun, thinking of doing a PWD as a Venture Activity, a council wide activity. (Oh Man, Pounder is going to flip) Races start at midnight, of course

Hi Nivipi, dont worry about Fat Old Guy and purcelce, they are merely participating in an old american tradition known as "busting on" or "busting his chops", harmless really. We have quite an ecletic crew here, people from all over the United States with a few from other places as well, all are welcome and have a good time (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

By George, I think he's got it, or at least a place I wanna go... Now help me out, what color pill do I take to get to pounders world? The Red or the Blue? BTW: TO all forum members, The Pennsylvania Cabela's is open in Hamburg, if you ever decide to drop in, let me know, I am about 30 minutes from there, its a real interesting place

Does anyone know how old Baden-Powell was when he married Olave? And then, how old was she? If the debate over the "properness" of sexual activity is measured by the ability to procreate then it follows that sexual activity that has no chance of procreating must be deemed "wrong". If all sexual activity that has no chance of procreating is wrong, I am going to have to sell all my stock in Viagra, even though its one of the most common prescription drugs sold to men over 60, very few of them and their partners are looking to be parents.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Ed, glad it worked for the scout. It does bring up an important issue, and perhaps a lesson the scouts should carry on into adult life. As I comemnted earlier I used to be a manager of an X-Ray (Radiology) Department. Of course, keeping track of films and patient names was always a headache. I get a call one afternoon, a father was having a fit because we couldnt find the films on his son and he was supposed to pick them up to take to a specialists office. Of course the father was frantic about his son having a severe health problem and was venting on the receptionist. He couldnt understand why we couldnt find "Charles Parker" (his son's) file folder. I get up to the reception area and this guy proceeds to dress me up and down and then for good measure, just like shampoo, he repeats. When he slowed down to take a breath, I asked him when the child was in last. He gave the approximate date, I used date search on our computer log and came up with a patient done during that date range the right age but the name was "Robert Parker". Robert? the father says Thats his real first name but his mother and I always call him by his middle name, Charles, the only one who calls him Robert is his grandmother and oh my lord she was the one who took him to get the tests. In 5 minutes the folder was located under the name Robert, processed and a humbled father left, with his childs films. The receptionist who had forgotten about using "date search" became quite proficient in the future. Another time a woman was irrate, we couldnt find her mammography films. She was quite stressed as well. I get the call, angry patient in the reception area, so I go up to see what I can do. This was pre-computer log, The lady starts to rip into me, telling me how she had always come to this hospital to have her mammographies done, she had come here for 10 years and I had better find those films since they were hers and a necessary resource if she had problems in the future. I asked when was she here last, she said I came in August, I know it was August because it was exactly 6 weeks prior to my wedding and I was going over my to do list in the waiting room and Oh my lord, i forgot my name changed, look under Smith, not Jones for the last name. In 5 minutes the folder was located. The moral of the story? its a good idea to stick to your formal name when filling out any form, just to be consistent. (HIPPA note, all names are fictitious, and similarity to charactors, or persons alive or dead is coincidental and not intended to malign, slander, or libel them, the situations are real)

In the Council where I live, Eagle Board of Review members dont certify merit badges. The Eagle candidate fills out the Eagle application, at the bottom of the first side is the "grid" where merit badges are listed and the dates earned specified. The aplication is sent to Council headquarters where the dats of these meritbadges are verified against the Council records. If the dates and names on the Advancement Reports match, all is well. At Eagle Boards of Review (I am Advancement Chair for my District, I have done a lot of them) we talk to the scout about which merit badge was fun, hardest, worst etc. but we dont verify the cards, that has already been done, thats the way its done in my neck of woods. I have never seen a problem with Robert, Bob, bobby, etc. doesnt mean there havent been, but I havent seen it.

FOG, is this a real case? Is someone really splitting hairs that thin?

Pounder, just so there is no misunderstanding, when I talk about curfews, its for training, we ran both the Venture Leadership Skill Course and the basic first aid training for Ranger over two separate week ends. The kids never did settle down at night. At the Council Rendezvous and Cardboard Boat race, they seemed to be fueled on adrenaline. When we do back packing, as with your crew there is no such issue. PS. How can you do anything in Venturing and NOT involve the youth? (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Personally I am not surprised that the sons of active parents do well. The teachers amoung us will reinforce the best thing a kid can have going for him are involved parents. Now, you are correct that the troop controls advancement. But I see plenty of parent scouters who are harder on their kids then others. I am not sure what you want, a troop run by mediocrely interested adults?

Absolutely the scout can raise funds for materials for an Eagle Project

Outdoor Thinker, I am not sure how to phrase this, because it may come off sounding negative, and I dont want to do that, but here goes. Of course, Venturing is a youth led organization, and the adults are there to lend support. However, one thing the youth must bear in mind is the adults have to be interested in the activities as well as the youth, else they may find other things to do with their time. I am a Venture Committee member, but if my son lost interest in the activities, my involvment would be curtailed. At the extreme end a Crew cant say hey adults, drive us to Chicago this week end cuz we want to see the Cubs in in the playoffs, but the adults cant say we will have a 10:30 pm curfew whether you like it or not. It is a balancing act, tilted towards the youth, as it should be, but the adults capabilities and likes/dislikes should be accounted for, do you understand?

well in our council the head Venture guy keeps trying to turn it into Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts have roundtables so obviously Ventures have to as well, and what topics do we want to present? and that is directed to the adults, not the youth. The youth should be setting the roundtable agenda, and he keeps harping on the youth officiers, is this done, is that done, I think we leave them alone and see what happens, if they fall on their face, we ask what they did, what they didnt do and what can be done in the future to not repeat the problem, and then we look over their shoulder, but I dont think he should be as heavy handed as he is or appears to be. Right now they (adult committee) want to establish a curfew, these kids dont slow down until 3 am and are up early in the morning, I dont see setting a curfew on a Crew event if they are adults, they need to act like one and pay the consequences of a late night I think they can stay as long as they want, they do have to be at colors in the morning Just seems the adults dont want to let go is all, the crew advisors are ok, its the council types that bother me, guys with out crews

I dont know what the rush is to figure how much the girls know beforehand. Have meetings, discuss your plans and see where every one is with skills. I know more thana few Eagle Scouts who are a little shaky with compass, and are all thumbs on back packing stoves though cooking on fires they are fine. All the Ranger electives have a teaching component, look upon bringing all crew memebes up to speed as part of the process of comming together. Males and Females.

Outdoor Thinker, what a coincidence, our council has a youth officier group called the VEB as well and a member of the crew I am honored to serve is its president as well. I would like to know how you balance the youth input and adult ideas. Seems our group wants to be youth led, but we have a tough time with a few council types who want to run things like they always have, roughshod over the youth. Actually the more I think about it, I think the Round Table topics should be 100 percent youth driven. Now thats a goal to strive for!(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
