  1. I think SPL_15 is for real based on his responses to other threads of this forum. However, thats not to say he couldnt be a fraud, we have had them in here before. Then again, I could be a fraud as well, we may never know
  2. And I dont mean practice, practice, practice ... I have been invited to attend the Training Center, just one question, once I get to Colorado Springs, how do you get there?
  3. Our District Roundtable staff annually hands out forms at the planning meeting. it has a list of topics and spaces for write ins. Then a schedule is set, and troops "volunteer" to present the topics. You can start with a few ideas of your own, add what the scouters suggest, and go. Ideas? Eagle project ideas Troop Level Boards of Review, Local Campsites Local Lakes that feature canoe rentals A "meet the troops" night for Webelos and parents, troops set up displays and the Weblos wander amoungst the troops and talk to the adults and scouts about troops to see which ones they may like. Our Council sends all Webelos a postcard talking about the meeting. Another well attended meeting is an Eagle Project "Association" night. Associations from the area come and talk about what they do and past Eagle projects and what they may need in the future. Its attended by leaders and scouts alike. Scouts are invited to all meetings, and we are trying to get more scout led presentations,
  4. "...Second star to the right and straight on till morning..." I won't grow up. I don't wanna go to school. Just to learn to be a parrot And recite a silly rule. If growing up means it would be Beneath my dignity to climb a tree I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow u-p Not me. I won't grow up I don't wanna wear a tie Or a serious expression In the middle of July! And if it means I must prepare To shoulder burdens with a worried air... I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow u-p Not me! I may mature, but I won't grow up!
  5. Ed, right you are, Frank and the Plane, but first Steppenwolf's "Don't Bite the Hand that Feeds you " Anyway, if we dont teach the youth the classics who will?
  6. Driving to Memphis last night (Thursday Nov 13th) from Poplar Bluff Missouri, I heard a lot about this. One talk show host commented that the monument was not just the Ten Commandments, but also had the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The goal of the monument was to show where the ideas of distinctly American founding docments were based. Would like to know if anyone knows if this is true. I heard an argument against the monument. Lets say a plaintiff, or defendant has an issue before the Alabama Supreme Court and the person is Shinto, Buddist, Hindu, etc. Walking into a building where justice is supposed to be blind, and having a reference to only three religions (Islam get thrown in as a tangent) but not his, can he expect a fair judgement? I am not saying this is a good argument, but I thought it would serve as future further fodder(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. OK Ed, but only because you asked. On a trip to Harrisburg from Bethlehem (about 90 miles) I had three of the more renown rambunctuos rowdy raspscallions the troop has in the back seat. On the way home they were up to old tricks and generally causing a ruckus, not bad, but after a 10 miler I didnt want to listen to the usual show they put on. I tried to find a good rock and roll station to drown them out and nothing could get picked up. Then I remember I have a "Best of Jethro Tull" tape in the car. I slipped it in and told the scouts this was one of my all time favorite bands. As luck would have it, the tape starts pretty close to the beginning of the song "Livin' in the Past". Well ol' Ian is groovin' on his flute and the scouts have the termity to ask if what is being played is "Country" music. I must confess I almost swerved off the road, Jethro Tull? Country? Todays youth have no appreciation for culture. Well, I know what song is next, and between pauses I crank the volune as high as possible. The next song, the immortal classic "Aqualung". The song starts with its classic, signature riff and the sounds just reverberates through the car. Then it goes silent for what seems forever and the main body of the song starts. Well, the scouts were poking each other and carrying on until they heard the intro, then their eyes bugged out and they sat in rapt attention. We listened to that tape all the way home. Lucky I can never get tired of Aqualung. They wanted to know who it was singing, I said Jethro Tull, they ask who is that. I explained its not a who, its a what, a band with the inestimable Ian Anderson as the first if not the only "rock and roll flutist." (that should be an oxymoron, but with Ian, it isnt) Well, all the scouts could do is talk about Mr GreyEagle's taste in music. I need to introduce them to the politcal side of Steppenwolf as well. Country Indeed!!!!!!!!! BTW, Our hometown, OT and I's, Bethlehem has Musikfest every year during the first week of August. This past year it featured Jethro Tull, I dont know how many originals are in the band, but Ian was there and as long as Ian plays, Tull RULES!!!!
  8. I always thought of mentally awake as being aware of your surroundings and that a scout would never dull his senses by abuse of any controlled substance.
  9. Bob, that was the first thing I tried, it recorded by the computers microphone, and the quality was way beyond poor. If anyone can make it happen, let me know
  10. Ok, I got it to work without converting the sound files to a WAV format. I saved the sound recordings on my computer. I am blessed to have a CD Burner on my computer. I recorded the sound onto a CD. Then in Powerpoint, I was able to go the INSERT section of the toolbar, droped down to the Movies and Sounds section and clicked on it, went to the "Play CD Audio Track" section. I followed the directions there and inserted the sound in the powerpoint slide. So now, when the slide of B-P appears, the recording of his voice starts up. It will work as long as the CD is in the computer. Not perfect but it works.
  11. Hey, Acco, I know what you mean, Say, if you think about it, if the BSA, doesnt want to benefit from an Eagle Project, why should another organization allow an Eagle project to benefit them ? Help, Mr Wizard !!! ::Drizzle Drassle Drussel Drone, Time for this one to come home::
  12. I remember my Eagle project, I washed and waxed the home room floor in the Seminary I was attending. Got down on my knees and rubbed off all the heel marks. As has been noted here many times, the Boy Scout Program does change requirements on occasion. What served as an Eagle project in the past may not qualify today. The following is taken from the Boy Scout Website: http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?c=xds&terms=eagle&x=27&y=4 The second paragraph entitled "The Requirement" in part says "...While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to your religious institution, school, or your community. (The project should benefit an organization other than the BSA.)..." Now, there is that tricky word "should", but hold on, In the fourth paragraph, entitled "Limitations" it says. "...Work involving council property or other BSA activity is not permitted...." So, I guess the summary is, an Eagle project might benefit the BSA (because the line says should), but the work cannot involve council property or any other BSA activity. Not sure how you could benefit the BSA without working on Council property or other BSA activity.
  13. If a scout cant keep the 12 words of the scout law in his heart and mind, how will he remember the plethora of rules a troop might whip up?
  14. I want to use the recordings in a power point presentation. Powerpoint wont take the real player file format, is there a way to make Powerpoint take real player?
  15. Ok, please look at this link, http://www.chsscout.net/rescenter/video/index.shtml down at the bottom of the page there are down loads of B-P talking, they are all "real player" recordings. How can I convert them to a WAV file?
  16. http://usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/denali.html try this to start
  17. A long time ago, in a galaxy far far far away I was a new parent with the troop my son joined. On the very first campout I was tasked with looking over the boys as they gathred firewood. Well, one of the older scouts walked by me and hurled an "F-Bomb" unaware of my prescence. I stopped the scout in his tracks and asked him if that was scout like talk and what would he parents say if he talked like that at home and he had better not ever repeat that word in my prescence. And I didnt whisper this either, I got a little passionate in my tone and volume. The scout shrank back and never uttered another objectionable syllable, as far as I can tell. I was not a trained leader at the time, however, I would never have considered going to the Scoutmaster to say Bobby just said "F", I handled it the way I thought best. Even after training, I think I would do the same thing, except maybe control the volume. In the long ago Galaxy I was the manager in a Hospital Radiology Department. I had a chronic complaining employee. I just could never do anything to please her. Even when I complied with her wishes, she would complain that it took me too long to make it happen. The problem was, every once in awhile she made a good point, but it was tiresome to separate her good points from her chaff. But usually her good ideas were on target. I learned I had to listen to her and decide what was good and what wasnt, I couldnt just summarily dismiss her. I think Bob makes a good point, maybe what she has to say is 90-95% non-sense, but can you risk if she is right 10% of the time?
  18. I embrace humility, in fact of all my charactor strengths, which are numerous, I prize my humility above all else. I am the District Advancement Chair, I get this phone call one night around 7:30pm from a local scoutmaster, seems he has an Eagle Board of Review all present except for the District Representative (yours truly). I thought it was for the following week, he had for that night. I tell him to hang in there and in 20 minutes we convene the Board of Review, after profuse appologies on both sides. We arent sure who made the mistake, he had it written in his book as one date, and I in mine as the other. So, we start. I get to the point where I ask what would you add to the Scout Law and the scout says with out a moments hesitation, "Punctual", it took a good 5 minutes to get us back on track. The scout blushed immediatley after he said Punctual and turned a deep crimson, but not near as scarlet I am told as I. The Scout received his Eagle and the Scoutmaster and I still laugh about it at Roundtables etc.
  19. It could be American made jeans cost less than Boy Scout pants because far more jeans are sold each year then Boy Scout uniform pants and economies of scale are at work. Its just a thought.
  20. "not eaters of fish." "I thought that you meant Roman Catholics." Hey FOG try to keep up, we catholics can eat meat on fridays as long as they are not during Lent Looks like you could use some catholic retraining
  21. I debated whether or not this should be a private message or not, but here goes. I am not about to launch any type of investigation of any unit talked about on this forum. I like SPL_15 and having seen his posts, I think he is a remarkable young man. I do also think about everyone who reads this forums and when I see things that dont add up I will quesiton it. Not to embarrass anyone, but to let those reading it what the rules are.
  22. Well, YoungSpikedEagle wouldnt mind an afternoon at the Met. it could be done
