Bob, just a musing, in our Council we, (the volunteers) have been told that a male Venturer may wear the Eagle rank patch on his green Venturing uniform until he is 21 and then he can wear the knot. I'd like to see a definitive source on this one, I can accept it either way.

I always like to call it "Its Knot Fun" When teaching knots, be sure the demonstrator knows the knots. Simple enough, but when the teacher starts to struggle, things go bad fast. When teaching knots, have the demonstrator TURN HIS/HER back to the scouts, raise arms over over and tie the knot. That way the scouts can see how the know will look when they do it. When you tie a knot in front of people, they get an inverse image. Use BIG rope, especially for demonstrations. Nothing like using 1/4 inch rope for a demonstration, it cant be seen. Use 1" rope, this makes for a big knot and the scouts can see how the knot is formed. If possible get climbing rope for demonstrations, its thick and colored, COPE courses and the like have to dispose of their ropes on a scheduled/use basis. If you can get a 6 foot length, you have a wonderful tool. Use two different colored ropes to demonstrate the sheet bend, its a lot easier to learn that way. If possible use a robe with differnt colored ends, again, makes learning a whole lot easier When you demonstrate a knot, explain a use for it, and then show how the knot is used. Make it relevant to the scouts, don't just say this a square knot, this a timber hitch, demonstrate a use.

You might be a professional Scouter if . . .
OldGreyEagle replied to commandopro's topic in Council Relations
I was going the Kilt way myself, Appears like Commandopro realized his faux pas, apologized for it and now wants in on the party which is ok, but reconciling senses of humor may take some time. BTW, I am a volunteer with Boy Scout long pants, Boy Scout shorts, Venture Shorts and soon Ventrure long pants (as ADC-V I need to set the example) ... did I also mention I am a glutton for punishment? -
"but some of the Scouts didn't get it at all.(???)" WAKWIB Could it be those scouts who didnt "Get it" have no conception where those pieces of meat wrapped in cellophane and white foam come from?

If we are such a terrible country and one that elicits jokes from your countrymen, why do 90 percent of them live so close to the US border, you would think by your tone they would be fleeing in droves to the Artic Circle to get away from us. WHy do your fellow citizens visit American Hospitals and leave behind the socialist mess of health care you guys have. Bin Laden and the rest want the world to be all under Islamic rule, do you think that will exclude you guys? America is the target because its the biggest, but dont ever dream you guys will get a pass because you eat blubber. The United States is seen by some as a rogue nation, well if having its security solid and freedoms intact makes us rogue, well, OK. You want to make fun of us, fine, you want to taunt us fine, but, if/when there is a huge fire in the Northwest Territories or an earthquake rumbles through Winnipeg, there will be eyes looking south for aid, and expected aid at that and if its not arriving in hours, people will be complaining where is the US? Oh yeah, and that aid is free, we dont expect payback, maybe not being made out as buffoons, and even that is ok, make us buffoons, but where would you guys be without the US directly south?

I apologize for this entry, it might bring a sense of reality to the thread: Rape is not about sex, its about violence and domination

I could Hagrid, would be better than some jobs I have had.

Dave, look at your support and write the original post off as a nut, I know I will. commandopro, if you get down this far, we have enough crotchetey, meddling, disruptive and just plain mean and ignorant posters already, we dont need any more

Campfire Fairy If you do get disgustingly rich, and acquire all those animals, you will need a full time animal keeper. Don't forget your old Venture Advisor who would love to retire to a little cottage on the edge of your range and will tend to all your critters.

1. My four most favorite foods is Pizza, it has starch in its crust, it has dairy in the cheese, it has protein in its sauasage (or anchovies, double on mine), and it has vegtables in the onions, peppers, mushrooms (ok, maybe mushrooms arent a real vegetable) Pizza, the perfect food! 2. See above 3. Well of course now I will be inconsistent, when backpacking my favorite meal is Cous Cous, it is tiny tiny pepples of pasta, usually comes with a foil pack of seasonings. The Cous Cous are pretty bland by themselves, as is most pasta, but it comes in Pine Nuts, Garlic and Oil, etc flavors some have freeze dried vegtables mixed in. Its easy to take out of the cardboard box it comes in and transports well in a zip loc bag. Cooking is as simple as can be, boil the specified amount of water, usually 1.5 cups and then pour the cous cous in the boiling water, take off heat and stir in the seasoning let sit a few minutes and eat. It remains hot for a long time. Its very dense, very filling, and if you add some tuna or chicken from a foil package, its a well balanced meal.

A girl asks you to dance and you wonder if there is a merit badge for you in this... You dont see anything you like on the gourmet restaurant menu and ask for PB&J being the only one in the neghbor who gets upset when the power comes on after being out for 73 hours (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

The Troop has established a tradition of going to the same in Council Summer Camp every year, always during the 4th week of camp. Its set just perfectly so I always miss my anniversary. (MrsGreyEagle is a saint) I have brought up the possibility of going to another Camp at Committee meetings, within 3 hours are Hawk Mountaim, Ressica Falls, Nockamixon, Treasure Island and I am sure a few others but the answer is always the same, we know the staff, the locations, and the program. Don't get me wrong, its a wonderful place. But after being there for over 10 years, I think another Camp would be nice for the troop. In the meantime, I guess its back for this year. I am sure it will be a great year, Outdoor Thinker is down for Camp Commisioner so I know it wont suck, but variety would be nice as well.

So its sorta like in a way the lone scout program? Speaking of Juliette, didn't she turn down a marriage proposal from one Robert Baden-Powell ?

Wood Badge Bead Presentation Ceremonies
OldGreyEagle replied to acco40's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Recently our District Rountable (well Dec 3) had a Wood Badge Ceremony beading 7 individuals from the Wood BAdge class started in Sept 2002. This ol' Bear got his beads. While the numbers are usually this high, most Beading Ceremonies are done at the Roundtable -
Philly council looking at revised anti-bias policy
OldGreyEagle replied to MarkNoel's topic in Issues & Politics
Ok, so what we are saying is COL will draft something bordering on the esoterical linguistical equivalent to ether. Eveybody shakes hands and goes home happy to put this issue "to bed" Then when James Dale ( I mean he is from New Jersey, he could still be around) or some other avowed Homosexual submits an adult application, its accepted? No, it won't be accepted unless COL does start that rival faction. In any event all the participants will be interviwed, the Gays will say the Boy Scouts tricked us, the Boy Scouts will say we never promised them anything, our values are known. Who comes off looking worse? To borrow from another thread, if Scouter Survior Lil was held to a higher standard, so should COL and the BSA. If we mean no gays, we say no gays, anything less is unscoutlike and just opens up another round of nightly news lead ins
