I'm with Pounder, either all Ventures are eligible for the OA, or the OA flaps should not be on the Venture uniform.

Thank You Mark, I have not been all that chipper lately. The diagnosis of Diabetes was only the first thing I learned this year. The medicine I am on for my vasculitis (Prednisone) is making my vision blurry so I tend to save my eyes for my work. I still look over the Forum, but have decided to only repond when I think I can make a worthwhile contribution and if someone has nailed the answer or expressed what I would have, I let it go. On the other hand, I am hard at making a Capote at LV's suggesiton, will have a picture when I am done. I figure if I have to hang around the campfire, I may as well develop a story telling charactor, so besides the Ballad of William Sycamore and the Night I cremated Sam MCgee, anyone know any good poems I could learn?

I beleive you are talking about Vaughn Meader's album "the first family"

Label me "Dazed and Confused..." To quote from another dubious role model at least... It may just be me, but when I review the posts on this thread, I don't see anyone who wants to toss the youth out summarily. Most comments are focused on being sure the youth was not joking and/or having a serious discussion with him about his beliefs. I don't think anyone advocates "tossing him out" without a very careful examination of the facts. Now, from the original post, it appears the youth declared himself an Atheist in a meeting. I assumme, a dagerous tactic in any situation, that others heard him. So, now you have the Crew, hearing a member state he is an Atheist and I have to beleive some if not all, can we agree on most know belief in God as defined by the religious declaration principle of Socuting is required for membership. To ignore this comment is to tell the Crew no rules are absolute, and thats a very danerous message. On this Board many of the BSA's polcies and procedures are questioned, critiqued and down right savaged out for being unclear, inconsistent and vague. Here is a requirement that is outright clear and we have suggestions that its ok to ignore it. To say you dont have to beleive in God, to me is like saying you only need 18 merit badges for Eagle and dont worry about tieing a bowline, we know you tried. I dont think you "throw out" people out for a an offhand comment, but I also think its in the best interest of the Crew to be sure everyone knows where they stand.

from meritbadge.com requirement 4 Take part in ONE of the following sports on a competitive basis in two organized meets or tournaments: archery, badminton, bait or fly casting, bowling, canoeing, cycling, diving, fencing, fishing, golf, gymnastics, handball, horsemanship, horseshoes, judo, orienteering, paddleball, rifle or shotgun shooting, sailing, skating (ice or roller), skiing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, waterskiing, or wrestling (or any other recognized sport approved in advance by your counselor, except boxing and karate).* Judo is listed as is Wrestling, so much for the body contact thing, I guess there is a logic, somewhere...

I think the point is, you can use targets with a rifle and skeet for shotgun (and targets as well for Archery), Katate and Boxing require the striking of another person and Boy Scouts dont do that. We had a District Camporee based on a Survival Theme, had 3-D targets of Deer, bear, turkey, and a goose for the archery range. The Big HOncho (not sure who/title) said couldnt be done as Boy Scouts dont shoot at even targets that imitate a living creature. Always wondered if that was true

I started this tread back on June 24th, 2003, sadly a little hard drive melt down claimed what I had, however, check http://www.macscouter.com/Skits/index.html

Rather than ask what are Venturers favorite activities, I would ask, what do youth 14-21 want to do? We have climbed (Clumb?)indoors and out (going to a climbing gym this weekend, Reading Rocks in Wyomissing "Rocks" the owner is an Eagle who learned to climb at Philmont, but I digress. Our Crew Backpacks, Car Camps, most recently in Gettysburg, stays at a Hunters Cabin, does Whitewater and participated in a cardboard boat race that another crew in our council put on. Our Crew has sponsored A First Aid Training week end where all the requirements for the required First Aid portion were covered and another time we sponsored a week end and did the Venture YOuth leadership program. We have done Snow Tubing and have a skiing trip scheduled. The District Pinewood Derby Chair and I were talking, well the theme this year is Speed Racer. Well, the Crew will be there, dressed as charactors, Speed, Trxie, Spridle, etc. The Crew ate up the idea, as long as they "get" to make pinewoos derby cars and race them in a "crew" race. What do Venures DO? Whatever interests them. We have a Model Train Crew in Council, part of the Hobbies and Crafts portion of Venturing. They were part of a Toys for Tots train display this December and the Council Crews went out one night and visited them, to see their lay out. We have another crew in the COuncil that does World War II renactments. Remember, Venturing covers the following: Arts and Hobbies Outdoor, Sea Scouting, Sports, Religious Life (formerly Youth Ministries) If a group of youth have a similar interest, a Crew may be formed. What do Crews do? Whatever the youth want!

This is a serious issue, I would have a very formal, sit down serious discussion with the young man. If indeed he is Atheist, he cannot be part of the Venturing Program. Such a comment could have been made in jest, a clarification is needed, and removal is indicated if the claim is verified. BTW, it not up to the Crew Advisor to set goals for the Crew members, such as receiving the Religious Awards, thats for the crew to decide

I don't know if this will be considered heresy or not, but when in Gettysburg, you may consider Colonel Pickett's Buffet. It's across the street from the visitor's center. All of the Historic Hikes start and end around the Visitor's Center and a quick stroll across the street and dinner is served. They offer a Scout's group discount and are quite friendly

Youth leaders attending adult leader meetings
OldGreyEagle replied to scouter659's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Our Troop committee meetings always start with a standing agenda item, PLC time. This is set aside for the SPL or designee to address the Committee on any topic the PLC deems appropriate. Most months its not used, but at times it is and the discussions are very enlightening for both youth and adult. We know in scouting there are no closed meetings to adults, there shouldnt be for youth either. -
Over the past 4-6 weeks I have been seeing a multitude of physicians regarding a health problem I developed. At this point it's not known if I have Diabetes or I have Diabetic like symptoms caused by the medication used to treat another condition. The one thing I can say is I am testing my blood sugar every 4-5 hours. I'd like to know how others who are Diabetic camp, what they do, any tricks or ploys they use to keep blood sugar level in range.

In the troop I am fortunate to serve, most adults (Parent age)are referred to as Mr/Mrs/Dr. whatever the case may be. To reinforce this, the adults themselves will adress other adults IN THE PRESENCE of the scouts as Mr/Mrs/Dr. We found that while the adults may know Mrs Smith's first name is Mary, the youth don't, so we would refer them to Mrs Smith. As scouts age out and transition to ASM's, they are stilled called by their first name, havent come to point where what was once Bob becomes Mr. White.

"Mandatory" training
OldGreyEagle replied to scoutldr's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I don't remember who, but somebody in the past history of scouting said something along the lines of every scout deserving a trained leader, I think he was rather prominent in Boy Scouts foundation Don't see how you can have a quality program if the people running the program don't know the program -

Merit Badges - what if signed, but not earned?
OldGreyEagle replied to Mike F's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Just a hypothetical quesiton A scout comes to you for a Swmimming merit badge blue card. You sign it and give it to him and suggest/assign (not sure you can assign, but for this situation I'll go along with it) 2 counselors you know will do it right. The scout comes back 2 months later with a signed blue card by a registered counselor other than you the ones you suggested. The problem is the guy is known not to do a very good job, but is still registered as a counselor. When you quesiton the scout, he says he tried the other two but couldnt contact them. They never responded to his messages. The scout called the scout office and got the third one's name and contacted him and did the badge. You now have a scout with a signed blue card by an approved counselor. Now, I know a lot of people on this forum would say make the scout do it over, and the scout is told he has to redo the badge. The scout takes his 1/3 of the signed Blue Card and goes to the District Executive. The scout points out he has a signed blue card from a registered counselor and wants to know if the Troop can make him redo the badge. Now what do you think will happen? (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
I think there was a core of people during WWI who didnt think it was right to put guns on airplanes, that while planes could "scout" they shouldn't be armed. They wanted war kept out of the skies... I think they were referred to later as "Straffing Victims" I see arms in space like Plastic Surgery on Cher, I mean I can see you can argue what good will it do or how moral it is, but you just KNOW some doctor will do it. I would rather be prepared for the inevitiable than try to unilaterally say no guns in space. BTW, remind me again, what is Neville Chamberlain best remembered for?

I travel a bit in my non-scouting career, I can say I have been to Philadelphia, Chicago, New York City, Seatle and a whole bunch more, unless my vision is really really really bad, I havent seen any walled cities in the US. Now the Alamo in San Antonio (Love the riverwalk) probably comes as close to a walled city as I have seen as long as you discount Disenyworld, Six Flags, etc.
