  1. After my last dose of Wheelism, I am in, no more responses from me
  2. The only reason I respond is because I would hate for any lurker, especially a youth to see your ramblings and beleive them to be true, especially if no one responded. What I have attibuted to Baden-Powell is from his own words, from a recording. If he says the Boy Scout movement is non-military then I have to accept him at his word. B-P wanted the Boy Scout movement to be the force that would render war impossible. It takes a soldier to want to end war, as only a soldier who has seen action truly understands its horrors. Of course B-P wanted British scouts to be loyal to the King. The three aims of scouting are to improve Charactor, Citizenship and Physical Fitness. As a loyal British citizen he pledged his loyalty to King and country. As I remember most James Bond movies, James quite often refers to " King/Queen and country" as the reason why he does many of the things he does, not sure many would classify James Bond as a marxist/socialist or other similar tag. When the Brits sing God Save the Queen, they are not pledging loyalty to Queen Elizabeth as much as loyalty to the state (Eamonn tell me if I am wrong) the Crown and Country are seen as one. and lastly you wrote "...What caused WWI was an anarchist shot Prince Ferdinand of Autria in Serbia" I think you just upgraded Franz Ferdinand because he was an Archduke, not a Prince. Secondly, he was shot in Sarajevo, which I don't think was ever in Serbia, (I throw that out to others who will be sure to correct me if I am in error). Archduke Ferdinand was from Austria, not Autria and to say that his assasination CAUSED WW1 is like saying the reason for the American Civil War was slavery. Now, if you intend to post here as is your right please check your facts and then use the spell checker that SCOUTER-Terry has so graciously provided. With all your mispellings and confusion of facts that I can call you on, it makes one wonder how twisted your conceptions of Plato, Soctrates et al are. In other words, you have a credibility problem which should be corrected before you expect to teach anything.
  3. So Bob, this piece of rope, walks into a bar, the bartender sees him and yells out "Hey, you piece of rope, we don't serve your kind, get out of here" So a tad chargrinned, Bob backs out of the bar, stands off to the side and takes off his whipping string and shakes his head vigorously. Then he walks back in the bar, the bar bartender takes one look at him and says "Hey, aren't you that same piece of rope I just threw out of here? Bob looks around and then says, "Who me? I'm a frayed knot"
  4. Hail Comrade Eamonn, lets say I had a group of Ventures who were interested in attending this liberal celebration and were intent on doing all they could to spell the end of western civilization as we know it. How can we sign up to go and glory in the workers celebration ?
  5. Oh, some beer was spilt on the bar room floor And the bar was closed for the night And the little brown mouse came out of his hole And sat in the clear moonlight Oh he lapped up the beer on the bar room floor And on his haunches he sat And all night long you could hear him ROAR... "Bring on the bar room cat! Oh the cat came out about half past two And ate up the little brown mouse And the moral of the story is..... You cant take a drink on the house! (the shadow knows) (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  6. Achilleez, Pullllleezze, As I have posted elsewhere, the Vision Statement of the Boy Scouts of America reads: The Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. In the future Scouting will continue to: Offer young people responsible fun and adventure; Instill in young people lifetime values and develop in them ethical character as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law; Train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership; Serve America's communities and families with its quality, values-based program. Now you balance off that 80 percent of Americans (I saw that number on FOX while they were discussing Mel Gibson's movie) are Christian and you can extrapolate that at least 80 percent of the people here on the forum who are American are christians. Telling people of a faith based organization not to use the tenets of their faith to argue anything is like getting on a french website and telling the members not to speak french. If you come to a boy scout website, you are going to get boy scout values, I don't see that this should change by the request of someone who doesnt share those values,
  7. B-P himself stated that the Boy Scout movement was to to provide good works for the community, that the Boy Scout movement was non-military, non-sectarian, non-political and non-class. He saw the spirit of scouting traveling from country to country and hoped it would provide the soul needed to turn the League of Nations into a lving force that will render war impossible. Hmmmm, Just as I suspected B-P was a pinko radical, and dare I say LIBERAL!!! He wanted boys to do good works for the community, he wanted it to be non-military, non-sectarian and non-class, and non-political. That either makes him a communist or at least an anarchist. Thank you Wheeler for showing me the error of my ways, all this time the BSA has been portrayed by the media as a right wing religious organization when its really a pinko leftist organization soiling the minds of our young men.
  8. So, why do you discard B-P's invitation for women to be scoutmasters ?
  9. this is the mission of the Boy Scouts The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. The Scout Law A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent And the BSA Vision statement is: The Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. In the future Scouting will continue to Offer young people responsible fun and adventure; Instill in young people lifetime values and develop in them ethical character as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law; Train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership; Serve America's communities and families with its quality, values-based program Now, if somebody can find the Marxist doctrine in these statements let me.
  10. You would think a library would have merit badge books as well so Penurious clientele would not have to reduce ones' already scarce resources Anyway, label me dense but the following is taken from Meritbadge.com. 11. "every time I think I am getting out, He pulls me back in" Michael Correleone Godfather III (paraphased) Wheeler, in the thread Women in the BSA in response to my request to listen to B-P's voice recording where he clearly invites women to be scoutmasters you replied "...BP was not perfect but his program can be perfected." You reject women in the BSA, by this statement and others you have made. In this thread, you write "The current opinion is that we don't have to listen to dead men, yet this was not the opinion of the Founding Fathers. How can one understand this country and its government, if moderns reject what the Founding Fathers accepted?" So the question I put to you is this, if Franklin, Madison, Jefferson et al put tremoundous stock in what dead men said over 2, 000 years ago regarding government and the framers of the constitution are to be respected. (And I agree they should be) Why won't you respect the words of Boy Scouts founder? How can one understand the Boy Scout movement and its governing principles if moderns reject what the Founding Father said? As far as whether or not the system of government the US has is a classic republic or not, our government is what it is. Adlai Stevenson once observed that in a democracy (if you disagree with the word democracy, please argue it out with Adlai, another dead guy so he can't be wrong)people get the government they deserve. So the US is run the way the people deserve, when we think we deserve different, we change it. So, what is the purpose of arguing whether or not the US is a Classic Republic unless its to fulfill some esoteric niche in the pantheon of time? (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  12. Hops, that crack about the car was priceless, I am sure thats what Mr Pounder was referencing. NJCubScouter, thank you for your true scouting spirit showing that there is good in everyone, even if its only comic relief. Hot Flash I just heard ABC is going to do a a 2 hour special on Wheelism and its proponents, Wheelists, the hostess of the program will of course be the iconic Baba Wawa
  13. I should probably add that I was almost thrown out of my Metaphysics Class. During the mid-term exam the proctor felt I was looking into the soul of the girl sitting next to me for answers...
  14. In the final analysis, it matters more what do you think about being a Female Program Director at a Boy Scout Camp than the opinions of such a rapscallion group. I think you can do it, but you must be convinced you can do it as well. You know I would do anything I could to help you, but you must want it as badly as anything you ever have, then it will be no problem.
  15. There is knowledge, the ability to recollect facts and then there is intellect, the ability to take all the things you "know" and fashion them into something useful. In Bloom's Taxonomy of Education, he ranks educational activities in the following manner, starting with the lowest level Knowledge Comprehension Analysis Synthesis Evaluation Knowledge is on the lowest rung because while you may "know" alot if you can't translate it into action, its worthless. Had a French teacher in high school who was into the total immersion method. He shows up the first day speaking french and taught all the lessons in french and couldn't understand why the class was clueless over its lessons. yes, we "knew" french when it was spoken, we 'Knew" words that were french, as we remembered them from the day before, but we had no comprehension of what they meant. When the teacher started to explain in the vulgate what each word meant, the class scores went up and then we began to comprehend what was being said. After it was explained to us that Bon Jour actually meant "Good Day", we could comprehend that it was a greeting, An Analysis of the phrase Bon Jour taught us Bon meant Good and Jour meant day (as the Soup du Jour means soup of the day) Then knowing Bon meant good and nuit meant night we could synthesize the phrase Bon Nuit or good-night. With the phrases Bon Jour and Bon Nuit in our vocabulary we could evaluate the situation and determine which of the two phrases was appropriate. So Wheeler, the moral of the story is rather than immerse us with your abundant knowledge, why not break it down to the point where it can be comprehended, analyzed, synthesized and evaluated? Of course you are under no obligation to do any of this, but it would certainly help in getting your message out, whatever that may be.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  16. You would think that a guy who spends so much time in a library and collecting quotes would realize the importance of correct spelling and comprehension. Its Solzhenitsyn not Scholzentizen as Wheeler has it in the preceeding post. Its St Thomas Aquinas not Aquanas as he posted in another thread. And at least one other poster has pointed out another mispelling of a last name. Normally I don't concern myself with spelling unless it gets in the way of the message, but when a self-prolaimed teacher of the ignnorant masses talks down to his audience, you would think he would make sure his spelling is correct. The spelling of Scholzentizen was so bad I had to use the title of one of his books to get the correct spelling. I don't want to slay the messenger, but I do expect messengers, especially self-annointed ones to be accurate and precise. (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  17. TIN MAN What have you learned, Dorothy? DOROTHY Well, I -- I think that it -- that it wasn't enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em -- and it's that -- if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with! Is that right?
  18. I haven't had an opportunity to read St Thomas Aquanis, but I have delved into St. Thomas Aquinas a bit, nothing much to speak of other than he was a victim of circumstance at the hands of the University of Paris. For a self descibed student of philosophy I would think you would be more careful with at least the spelling of the names of the people you quote. I mean, first you read a biography of B-P and miss the fact he was not born a Lord and then you mis spell St Thomas Aquinas's name. Just how accurate and complete a scholar are you ? Then again, you may suscribe to the ee cummings school of grammar in which case you are doing fine composition wise.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  19. So I was taking a philosphy class recently and we touched on the issue of metaphysics and the question of reality came up. One rather abrupt young man who had long bored the class with his long and rambling dissertations containg all manner of quotes from ancient philosophers and was roundly booed for it asked the professor if he could name a more modern philospher who could meld Idealism and Materialism into a coherent theory of reality. The professor wrote on the chalkboard "I Kant" to which the young man replied, I know spelling doesnt count for much anymore, but at least the professors should be able to...
  20. I think much like an ax(e) or knife, the INTERNET should be regarded as a tool that fits in well in some situations and not in others. You have already identified one problem, the INTERNET is not infallible (see Pierre Salinger and the Long island airline crash) Scouts who rely on the INTERNET for requirements and sources of information may find both dated. As a merit badge counselor you are to hold them to the requirements and its up to them to fulfill them with the resources available, and meet the requirements. BTW, before some one else asks it, what if the Internet is accessed through the library? Arrghhh Bob White beat me too it, but if we both ask the same question, it may be a valid one(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  21. Funny thing happened in our neighborhood, both my mother and the lady across the street were "expecting" at the same time. She and Mrs. Martha Hill got quite friendly as you may expect as they both went through the same experiences. Well, one night long about month nine, my mother wakes and tells my father its time to get to the hospital. After she gets admitted, she realizes Martha is in labor just one room over. Well, Marty (as she was called) gives birth to triplets, totally unexpected, (ultrasound was way off in the future at this point). I get born the same day as her three boys. When they get home they are quite the celebrities while I was more or less an afterthought. From then on time in the neighborhood was marked either as before the triplets were born or after. Their names were Larry, Jerry and Harry. Whether at school, or in the neighborhood or even in the boy scout troop, I quickly learned the best answer to the question how old are you was to reply " as old as the Hills" BTW side note: One of the boys, Harry I think it was went through a bit of a scalawag period, fleecing small town folk by selling musical instruments and uniforms or something like that. Last I heard he had settled down, married himself a librarian of all things and was living happily in Iowa.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

  23. Sturgen, Sturgen, Sturgen,...Sturgen.... lets take a look at the post that has riled your youthful hide. Unless I miss my guess the whole reason for this thread is the phrase: "Even less than that mp3 player that you want to drag along." Now, you made the rookie mistake of thinking that this meant the poster was saying you carry a mp3 player, when actually all it does is say you "want" to drag it along. Doing and wanting to do are two different things, I "want" to do alot, self control and discipline keeps me only doing what is "right" and correct (most of the tine, I have lapses) Then the poster continues by saying: "If you were an adult you'd understand the need to enforce written safety rules" Now, here you make the mistake of thinking Adult = Age and nothing can be farther from the truth. I have met some quite accomplished adults aged 16 and some out right children aged 50. But with youthful enthusiasm and pre-judged concepts you jumped to the conclusion that the poster was equating age with wisdom. If you glean the post, I don't believe you will find the word "wisdom" mentioned at any time. So, you thought you were accused of carrying a mp3 player, when all was alleged was your desire to carry one, you say you don't equate wisdom with age, when the word wisdom was never mentioned until you brought it up, and then you commit the ultimate youth crime, you care about what people think of you when a true grown-up, an accomplished adult can face a criticism, evaluate its merits and then move on without having to defend oneself especially when the detractor is a well known and accomplished button pushing, chain pulling , crank yanker Right now you are locked in an argument that boiled to its essence goes like this: Poster: You are a child Sturgen: AM NOT ! ( all thats missing is a tongue stuck out)
