  1. Maybe if the Mission of the Boy Scouts of America was the target of everyones' program, then the relationship between Aims and Methods would be easier to understand, or not...
  2. With all due respect to the august body of posters, there has been a level left out of this. I suggest confirming with the scoutmaster and committee chair there is an effort to "slow" the advancement process down. If this is true, the next step is to appeal to the District Advancement Committee, then to Council, then National. As an Advancement Chairman for our District, I would rather not embarrass a scoutmaster by telling him he was wrong and awarding the scout an Eagle Board of Review, then again, the scoutmaster should not have embarrassed me by placing me in the situation where I HAVE TO award the scout the Board of Review because he followed the requirments and earned it.
  3. Aw, Thumper, that reminds me, at a low point in our troop the Buck Patrol was combined with the Shark Patrol, one idea that was floated was the Buck Toothed Sharks, not sure why that wasn't selected. My son was the patrol leader of the Great Plains Walking Giant Herbivores, yes they used the Bison/Buffalo patch. (North America actually doesnt have a native Buffalo species, but then I am not one to nit pick...)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  4. ""When it is time for eagle scout, I think they need to be an ASPL, SPL. " I don't know how you can get away with this. The book clearly identifies the positions that qualify as leadership for rank advancement. It even leaves it a little vague as to allow some other leadership opportunities (imho). " Eagle in KY, You are Correct, the reason you don't know this can be "gotten away with" is because it can't. The Positions that qualify one for advancement to Eagle are pretty well well defined and any change there of is wrong, cannot be done and is not following the program
  5. Validation of Training? What a concept! At least its worth considering. Actually, you know how you have to renew Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense, Climb On Safely, Youth Protection and anything else I forgot, maybe every 2-3 years a scouter should have to attend a "review of the program". The Aims and Methods at the very least would be dicussed. This wouldn't replace the initial training, but serve as refresher courses. Its a thought. As far as vlidation of the initial training session goes. A pre and post test would be great
  6. Maybe the issue isn't that the training isn't strong enough, but that the training should be required of all involved. If everyone in a troop was trained, there would be less of a chance of someone saying, I went to training and they said doing skills testing during a scoutmaster conference was ok. If only one person has gone, then no one knows to challenge that statement. If everyone has gone, then this is less likely to occur. Everyone would remember different parts of the sessions and the troop would be much better off. I think Boy Scout Training is fine, it just needs to be required of all registered leaders
  7. Best place for a music major in Tx. Now thats damning with faint praise, wait, what am I talking about, they have both kinds of music in Texas, Country and Western... Hear about the Rat Exterminating Compnay a few Aggie Alums started? Only was in business for 18 months, then the war brides started to complain...
  8. A few years back we had a patrol form and they took the name "The Bushies" used the Pine Tree patch. I think they were looking for the adults to tell them they couldnt use it, but we didnt say a word. As soon as they could, the name got changed to the Pine Trees (as thats the medallion they wore) Back when I was a scout, just after Brownsea island I believe, I was a mamber of the FLamming Arrows, and my brother was in the Raccoons. For a Camporee we got put together to field a patrol. Should have seen the expression on the MC when he announced the second place patrol in the competition was the Flamming Coons from Trop 65
  9. Which of course begs the quesiton, why did the chicken cross the road? To prove to the Armadillo it could be done...
  10. I agree Ed, wearing the patch for 6 months does not mean the scout has fulfilled the requirements of the position, however, if at the end of the six months it's during the Board of Review that the scout finds out that he hasn't done his job correctly, shame on every adult in the troop leadership for not communicating this to the boy. A scout can't fix what he doesn't know is broke. You can't just "flunk" a kid in a BOR without giving him a plan to follow to advance. Thumper, that guy in the Eagle Board of Review is an Ass, to reject a scout for being excited and making that error is inexcusable, it just a some guy excercising power because it makes him feel good. He is of no value to the program.
  11. You can only do what you can do, Good Luck !
  12. I may be wrong on this, but after we beat the British and won our Independence, wasn't inclusion of Canada to what would become the United States an issue? Why wasn't Canada included in the treaty?

  14. Wonder if this law will apply to Bourbon street and the French Quarter, I was in N'awlins sunday to wednesday of this week. With proper vigilance the whole state could be run off one night's escapades down there. Hey lady, how DID you get those beads?
  15. Early May 2001, its hard to say the exact date as the story dribbled out in bits and pieces.
  16. almost any time up to July 18, 1969,
  17. Teddy has been known to stretch the truth a tad and also gives in to hyperbole every so often. If we are the most hated nation on earth, why do other counties accept the billions of dollars in aid we give out each year? Shouldn't their revulsion to our polcies make us such a pariah that our money and goods are tainted? Other countries solicit, beg and pander to get American tourists, if we are so hated, shouldnt other countries close their country to us? If we are so hated, no other country would dream of doing business with us, yet I am pretty sure most countries dont mind if they have business penetrating the American market. And oh, yeah, if we are so hated, why do other countries accept all those jobs that American Companies are "outsourcing" to other areas of the globe. To me Teddy has gone from promisng statesman to tired old crony who would sell his last child to defeat GW.
  18. You guys are missing the point, Of course the US is better than those that I mentioned. And when we have a mess we clean it up, we televise it and proclaim it to the world. That was the point. Will Rumsfield getting dressed down in front of Congress get the same play the pictures of abuse do in the Arab world?
  19. PWD Competition isnt bad, but when Dad's ratchet it up, its the Dad's actions that are bad, not the competition. Pounder's description of the Camporee proves once more there is always an audience if you give the people what they want. To be challenged in ways they want, not in ways adults think the youth do. The solution? Boy planned events. Gee, this boy lead thing could catch on...
  20. Totally confused here, From my recent memory of the forum, it appears the main competition (as it were) for scout membership is with the organized sports leagues that demand wholesale allegiance to them. Don't those teams keep score? Only retain the best atheletes? and only play the youth who will benefit the team? Should there be competition in scouts? Sure, you betcha, how else do you know how good you are unless you match up with some one else? You may think you know orienteering, but how do you know if you are tops unless you try your skills against others? Way back there was an older sister who played basketball, had a younger brother who played as well. Well, in one on one games, the older, bigger sister would dominate the younger brother, block his shots and muscle him around. Well, through necessity he developed a long range jumper that evened things out. Well, now sister Cheryl watches brother Reggie Miller play ball, and I know for sure if Cheryl had let Reggie win a few, and get by her for an easy shot, Reggie would not be the three point shooter he is today
  21. Achilleez I understand what you are saying, I think, but perhaps as a non-U. S. Citizen you can help me out. It as during this past week, I beleive, that HAMAS blew up a pregnant woman and her 4 young daughters. No word on when the HAMAS will be holding world wide televised hearings on who did that. Then again, maybe blowing up pregnant women doesnt get the same play that abusing prisoners does. About a month back, the train bombings in Spain killed and injured thousands. I don't recall any Islamic cleric or leader of an Islamic country apologizing for the misdeeds of the mis-guided few. What was done in the prisons was wrong, but when the same and worse was done by Saddam, where was the international outrage then ? The killing and mutilation of the 4 contractors, no outrage there? What will some one have to do to an American before the world is outraged... for US? I guess the internaitional community is right, we are just bad bullies with no thought except our own self serving interests. Time to cut off the foreign aid, sack the Peace Corp. Maybe we will just become isolationist. if there is an earthquake, devastating fire, tornado, well we are much to evil to help, world, you are on your own
  22. I do not like negative ads. It weakens the candidate in my eyes to attack the opponent. I want to know why the candidate is qualified for the job. I dont want to know why the opponent sucks. I am more interested in what the candidate wants to do than see the opposition run down. When all you can do is say bad things about your opponent, I figure you have nothing good to say about yourself.
