This is the Politics and Issues Thread, there is a lot of leniency shown as long as it is done in a scout like manner. Nothing said since this threads ressurection is unscout-like.
-
If this thread is to continue, may I remind all posters they are free to express themselves but are to refrain from personal attacks or unscout behavior (not that a person attack IS scout like behavior)

I beleive it was Dan Akroyd and Gilda Radner, I am sure It was Gilda, because she asked, what's so bad about 2000 Nuns and Orphans, the answer? "... Eaten by rats" The best was the Bass-O-matic with Lorriane Newman drinking a glass and smiling "thats real bass"

Ya know, if the activity really appeals to the kid, he will wear a coconut bra and a grass skirt, I know because I have pictures... ok ok ok, all lurid thoughts aside, it was a Council Venturing acivity with a Luau theme, that YoungSpikedEagle kid is a stitch, I don't know where he gets it from... The point is, he didnt care in that setting because it was what he wanted to do at the time. If scouting is run so that it presents activities that kids want to do, the uniform becomes secondary, wait, where have I heard this before?

Reminder: Only One Screen Name Allowed
OldGreyEagle replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Scouter-Terry, in keeping with the spirit of the rules, perhaps you should share with the forum those who have violated the only one screen name rule. To allow us to know who we are dealing with -
To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax-- Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. And what to do when disagreements occur. As we prove virtually daily, there are few things that we all agree on, but rational people can disagree by reasoned arguments and not by dismissing people as leftist liberals, or conservatives, or other epithet. Perhaps when a poster starts to be disagreeable, less attention should be placed on them, not more

Anne, all bureucracies are flawed because they are designed and run by mankind. They are the ones who have made the grievous error. From what I have read it is they who have suffered a loss, not you.

Will the hikes be "hosted" by a regisered troop adult who is over 21 and will at least one adult (over 18) also be in attendance? If so, I would count it as a troop activity. I may be wrong with the leaders thing, can a 19 year old ASM go out with a 40 year old dad? If so, I would count it

Remember our old friend Socrates, "Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers." So, we will always have the "older generaiton leary of the younger generations" still doesnt answer why

What's your earliest Scouting memory?
OldGreyEagle replied to dsteele's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My earliest scouting memory predates when I was a scout actually. My mother was a den mother. In her den were my brother, and all of his "cool" friends. Well to me they were cool, being 18 months older, we were just close enough to age to drive each other crazy but I digress. In the pack, the Dens had a tradition at the Christmas party of singing Christmas songs. Another tradition was at the end, Santa would come in with a big sack, stuffed with wrapped boxes, each with a Cubs name on it. It took me three years after I became a Cub Scout to realize it would always be a Pinewood Derby car, but it was fun, again I digress So, my mother's Den was assigned to sing the Song, Frosty the Snowman. Well, I loved that song, and I knew all the words and none of the other kids did. I taught it to them . My mother then said she would make a snowman costume (she was quite the seamstress) and I would wear it and bounce around as the song was sung. When the night came, I could barely breathe I was so excited, then our turn came, they sang, I ran down "the streets of town" and even stopped when the traffic cop part came up. The audience loved it, the den loved it and my brother sulked for weeks, (he didnt like me playing with his friends) It was great, and now, perhaps even more since my mother has died, whenever I hear Frosty the Snowman, I will get tears in my eyes and remember that night, oh so very long ago. -
Kenk, Stick it out, find a troop that understands. I know they exist, I am in one. Our senior patrol leader for last year summer camp is a kid who is half blind, has Cerbral Palsy and has to use a walker or wheelchair for mobility. He was elected SPL not because of his challenges, or despite them, but because the kids knew he was the best choice. We have two first year scouts who also use walkers or the arm supported crutches thing. We also have scouts who have mental/emotional problems. A few of them have state assigned aides who attend meetings. BTW, we also have a whole bunch of "otherwise" normal (whatever that is) scouts. Now, I know this is a unique group. Its all made possible by our Committee Chair who is a pediatrician and mother of two Eagle scouts. She reccommends scouting to her patients as a physical activity and also for its socilization opportunites. I am so glad I found them. My son was born with epispadias, thats an imcomplete formation of the urinary system. There are many forms, anywhere from not having the lower half of the abdomen closed to tiny imperfections. Well, my son was born without a penis. Male yes, but just an opning and some tissue that looked like a split hot dog. After tests to determine sex, (yes, he is a male) an operation was done to surgically construct a penis when he was 6 months old. The problem was without the necessary muscles in the penis, he could never control his bladder, he just leaked urine all the time which was alright as a baby and toddler, but as he got older, it wasnt as accpetable. He was also diagnosed as dyslexic and ADD. Around ages 7-8 he had his ureters transplanted from his bladder to his colon so he would urinate/defecate stool at the same time. This gave him much better control, but if he laughed or was startled, he would have an "Accident". When we first joined the troop, he would also tent with me, I carried all the necessary supplies as well as a portable toilet that he would use. I had it so if it were to be discovered, it would be mine. Well he caught some heck because he was always with daddy. Eventually at age 13 he had a (this is for boleta)appendicovesicostomy (hope I got this right) The surgeons took his ureters off his colon and put them back on the bladder, augmented it with colon tissue and then took his appendix and connected it to the new bladder and the outside abdomen wall. He now urinates by passing a catheter (10 french Doc) through the stoma into the bladder. He sleeps at night with a catheter in his bladder attached to a drainage bag. He tented with me a few times before he said, " I am who I am" and joined the troop. Showing them the bag. He never had a problem, or none that I heard about. He is Add, Dyslexic and has disfluencies, but he was elected SPL as well. HE was patrol leader to the 2001 Naitonal Jamboree, on staff at council JLTC for two years and an Eagle scout with a second bronze palm. In the early days, I and he were ready to quit more than a few times, while his peers came to accept him, the older scouts werent to sure. But I am an old Eagle and I wanted him to see all the benefits of the program. We stuck it out, and both are glad we did. We attended a Naitonal Jamboree together, even if he did need two footlockers, one full of supplies, we have been white water rafting in Maine, been to Gettysburg, Antietam and a whole bunch of other places. Do not quit, move around if you have to. You can find accptance, you may have to be his advocate as I am sure you are now. In the end, the scouts will mirror the behavior of the adults (that adult association thing, its pretty powerful stuff). You will find a troop that accepts people for who they are, it can be done.

Make that 1002 uses and still counting (actually the sweet dulcet tones are quite engaging, its the lyrics that are the pits) -
"What's wrong with enjoying the surroundings, fishing or just relaxing in nature?" Nothing at all Ed, nothing at all Now thats my idea of camp, however, to expect a multitude of scouts almost 2 score years younger than I to have the same opinions on relaxation may be expecting a bit much. Any device, electronic or mechanical, or whatever can either be a detriment or a boon, depends on its use. Don't interfere with my enjoyment and I won't interfere with yours, as long as its not illegal, immoral or fattening

I was at Camp School at Hawk Mountain this year. I was amazed at the number of tattos I saw, anthing from a small one on the calf to orange and red flames up the forearms (both sides even) Whether students or staff, tattos were in abundance, and given that almost all students at Camp School are already hired Camp employees, I dont think anybody can prevent you from showing your tattos, depending on location of course which would be the subject of another thread.
