I am sure upon further review, Packsaddle would never advocate the use of gasoline as a solvent. Acetone, paint thinner and many other products are availble but the inherent properties of gasoline makes it an extremely poor choice as a solvent.

How do you do it?

I am confused a tad. You say the scoutmaster is working with him, yet the ASPL doesnt know what the plan is when the SPL is absent. That sent up ref flags to me. Just what is the scoutmaster doing? You said the SPL and ASPL dont communicate well, again, what is the scoutmaster doing? The Scoutmaster should be assuring there is communication between the SPL and the ASPL and that there is a plan and the ASPL knows it whether the SPL will be there or not. Just what is considered "working with him" next, some scouts can be SPL at 13, others cant and some can be Eagle at 13 and others cant. Depends on the boy. If this is a radical change in behavior, has any asked whats up? Changes at home? Good kids dont beat other kids with lawn chairs for any reason. And what do you mean "beat with a lawn chair" could you provide more details on that one?

Maybe the old days werent as simplistic as I portrayed them, but they werent near as wound up as life today is neither and I do like your post, it said a lot of things I thought but couldnt put into words(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

I am not so sure, but then I may not undestand the premise either. Post Industrial revolution life has placed many more demands on the populace than Pre Industrial Revolution life. One does indeed have to read and write, basic skills go on beyond put the seed in the ground, cultivate and reap what comes up. As western civilization becomes more complicated, more preparation is required, hence adolescence, at least, thats my idea, I could be wrong

And of course FOG has a right to his opinion, such as he has expresed about Bob White. That does not make what FOG said about Bob White accurate, though it might be in FOG's mind. You may have noticed that FOG likes to stoke people up with Non Sequiturs regarding their personal life or make some other comment that is off topic and on the border of acceptance. Oh, and thats the last time you will see FOG post about Bob White

I think its a decision made by your scoutmaster, and he is not correct

Off the BSA web site February 6, 2002 Boy Scouts of America Resolution WHEREAS, the Resolutions Committee of the Boy Scouts of America (on behalf of the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America) on June 1, 2001, assigned the Relationships Committee of the Boy Scouts of America with the responsibility for considering and making recommendations to the Executive Board with respect to various resolutions submitted by members of the National Council at the annual meeting concerning the appropriate flexibility to be employed by the Boy Scouts of America in establishing standards for leadership; and WHEREAS, the Relationships Committee duly formed a Task Force on Resolutions, composed of a cross section of representatives from religious and civic chartered organizations and others represented in Scouting, to consider these resolutions and make recommendations to the Relationships Committee; and WHEREAS, the Task Force has reported the results of its thoughtful and extensive deliberations to the Relationships Committee, which submitted the report to the Relationships/Marketing Group Committee, both of these committees having approved and adopted the Report of the Task Force on Resolutions as their own; and WHEREAS, the national officers, having received and considered the Report, unanimously adopt the recommendations of the Report without reservation; and WHEREAS, the national officers agree with the report that "duty to God is not a mere ideal for those choosing to associate with the Boy Scouts of America; it is an obligation," which has defined good character for youth of Scouting age throughout Scouting's 92-year history and that the Boy Scouts of America has made a commitment "to provide faith-based values to its constituency in a respectful manner;" and WHEREAS, the national officers agree that "conduct of both Scouts and Scouters must be in compliance with the Scout Oath and Law" and that "membership is contingent upon one's willingness to accept the values and standards espoused by the Boy Scouts of America," and WHEREAS the national officers further agree that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the traditional values espoused in the Scout Oath and Law and that an avowed homosexual cannot serve as a role model for the values of the Oath and Law; and WHEREAS, the national officers reaffirm that, as a national organization whose very reason for existence is to instill and reinforce values in youth, the BSA's values cannot be subject to local option choices, but must be the same in every unit; and WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America respects the right of persons and individuals to hold values and standards different than the Boy Scouts of America, the national officers also agree that the Boy Scouts of America is entitled to expect that persons and organizations with different values and standards will nevertheless respect those of the Boy Scouts of America; THEREFORE, the national officers recommend the National Executive Board affirm that the Boy Scouts of America shall continue to follow its traditional values and standards of leadership.

Eamonn's post mentioning nicknames got me thinking, how do we end up with the monicker's some of us carry? My son, the renown YoungSpikedEagle is a case in point. Early on in his scouting career he got tagged with his last name as his sobriquet. It was common to hear the other scouts call out, Bobby, Mark, Paul, SpikedEagle, get some firewood. That bothered me a little, I went over the deep end when an adult leader asked me, quite innocently I am sure, if I thought my son would like to be on the camp honor guard. Except he said, "do you think SpikedEagle would like to be in the Honor Guard". Yikes, I had the adults calling him with his last name. I exploded, I told him he has a first name and it was to be used. I think I seriously scared the guy with my rantings. Another adult came over and wanted to know what the fuss was about as we were scaring the scouts. I explained, and I think I had the two of them understanding my point when a third adult came over, oblivious to the proceedings and wanted to know if anyone had seen SpikedEagle as the adult was doing the snow sports merit badge with him and he had some time for the discussion portion. The other two looked at me and I started to laugh so hard I had to sit down, sometimes you have to learn you can't stop the tide from comming in. His last name stuck as his nickname to the point a few years later new scout parents would ask me what his real first name was as the new scouts didnt know, they all called him by his last name. Now he works at Wal-Mart as a Kart Korraler, and proudly wears his last name on his name tag. Oh well BTW, had a friend in high school ended up with a nickname of Itch, it was derived from his first name which is Steve, any guess as to how that came about? Anyway, what nicknames do you have in your troop and why?

Interesting concept, I could see an argument both ways. If the scouts and scouters get a full meal initially and seconds are a luxury, then singing for them could be viewed as not hazing, just paying a price for more than what everyone else got. Singing for lost property is having to do something to get your own property back, that which is rightfully your own. I think there is a difference, well in my mind there is. One thing for sure lots of gray area in whats hazing and what isnt, I am reminded of the Supreme Court decision on Pornography, ( I think it was them, I could be wrong) they couldnt define it, but as one justice said, "I know it when I see it" When it comes to Hazing, I know it when I see it, then again, maybe what I know is Hazing is just good clean fun to another. What I do like about the Hazing discussion is almost all have qualified their statements with somethig along the lines of "... as long as it doesnt get out of hand.." Now, we need to decide what out of hand means, WOW fodder for plenty more

Ed, at this point I have lost what I was trying to say. I don't see Suzzie as hazing as long as everyone is informed of the rules ahead of time and no one does anything they dont want to do. The goal is to get people to know each other I see singing for lost items as hazing because the goal is to punish the scout or "teach them a lesson" by withholding their own property from them. How do they learn responsibility if they dont get punished or taught a lesson? Well, for all that we find, many more items are really lost, and the replacement of those items is where the scout learns responsibility and consequences of their actions.

All protagonists need antagonists, without the one, the other wilts on the vine. I beleive it was my dear sainted mother who told me, you know, Bobby only picks on you because you give him good reaction, if you quit reacting to him, he won't bother you. She was a wise woman -
How does "it depends" sound? If all troops are briefed on the game before it starts, then forewarned is forearmed and I trust no one has to do things they really dont want to do

Like Forrest Gump's feather, the threads go hither, thither and yon and no one has the prescience to know where it might go once started -

COOL! A Fahrenheit 451 reference, that just about blows all the other pop culture references away. For the un-erudite, 451 degrees fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper, such as those in a book burns. -
Oh those wacky CO's. they hold most of the power in the BSA and only a fraction actually know it, (IMHO) Anyway, there is a lot of talk about teaching responsibility and facing consequences of your actions. A tatto or a piercing is as perfect example as any. I support a persons right to get a legal tattoo or piercing anywhere they want (sic) I also support my right to say, what the heck are you thinking when you have a gauge in your ear the size of a Titantic porthole. While at Camp School I met a great guy who happened to have red and orange flames on both forearms wrist to elbows and a little beyond. Took a little getting used to, but after awhile, I didnt notice it. I do wonder if in an interview I would have the same opportunity to overcome my revulsion as I did during the week. So, go on, pierce and tattoo all you want, dont be afraid to show off who you are, but realize, there may be people you will want to impress who may be afraid of who you present yourself to be. BTW, one mans self-mutilation is another mans self enhancement, n'cest pas?
