Ok, so maybe I didnt express my thought as lucidly as possible. I see and hear a lot of hand wringing about how "easy" it is for scouts to earn Eagle and the veritable plethora of 12-13 year old Eagles that inundate the countryside. I see a lot of attempts to "shore up" the Eagle rank. Most of them center around the scout, what the scout has to do. restrictions on the scout. What I dont see is an appreciation that for every Eagle, whether 12 or 17 years and 364 days old who is not "genuine Eagle material" there is a troop that is responsible, not the scout. And if its the product of parents, then its the parents, not the scout. What we need is not more restriction on Eagle, but more adherence to the current rules. I feel the same way about this as I do gun control laws. I dont think we need more laws, just better enforcement of the laws that are in effect today, is that better?

If indeed 5 out of every 100 scouts earns Eagle, that is a 95 percent failure rate. Any organization that has a 95 percent failure rate should be concentrating on how to improve, not try to manipulate roadblocks to drive the failure rate higher, to 97-98 percent. Oh wait, making Eagle isnt the goal of the BSA, making First Class is, in the words of Emily Litella, ... Nevermind...

Ah, the vagacies of Scouting, its a National Program administered locally by volunteers who always (sic) do it the right way, or at least the way we have always done it... Its my understanding that an Eagle Board of Review is to be held either at the District/Council level or at the Troop level with a District/Council Representative in attedance. If there is a problem, your council will be getting back to you ...

Grew up in the Chicagoland area myself, how far from Wood Dale are you ? Welcome!

There is no finish line... If Eagle is the end of the path, why are there Eagle Palms of Bronze, Gold and Silver? And the ability of earning multiple Bronzes, Golds and Silvers? If you "hold back" a scout from making Eagle "too early" don't you reduce the number of palms he can earn? And if you do that, is not that un scoutlike? Eagle is not the goal, First Class is the only goal in advncements, the rest are supposed to be up to the scout.

scoutldr So maybe youth who are dying to wear a military uniform should look to another organization other than the BSA?

I started this thread to begin a resource for both parents and scouters who have had ADD/ADHD experiences. My son has ADD and is Dyslexic as well. ScoutNut, you may well find it interesting that a few of the forum members think singing for lost items (hazing in my book)is a good charactor building exercise (see Uniform section, Marked with a name?) ADD and ADHD might very well be over diagnosed today, but it is very real for those who have it. As a child I always had classmates who were perpetually being told to "buckle down" and "get off the clouds", They were ADD unknowns. I was told constantly that I had such great potential if I would only "Apply myself", never did figure out what that meant

Who has the best Troop Web Site?

http://www.troop362.com/ I am partial to the above -
Actually, I always thought the BSA "Gay" policy was for Leaders, not scouts. And the troop I serve may be an aberration, but we dont have a whole lot of 16 year olds sleeping in a tent with a 13 year old unless they are brothers, and in that case they usually want to be as far as possible from each other. The Troop doesnt assign tent mates, the scouts do that themselves, so I dont see Rooster's scenario happening for us. As far as who decides adult leaders for council treks, I would think the council would. And if a Gay leader were to be chosen, it would be by the council who would know him. I'm sorry, I dont see a gay man who wants to be Scout Leader as a demon. Since I have been posting here, I have seen 2-3 posts a year on Scout Leaders molesting scouts. I dont recall a single one ever being a gay man hiding his sexuality from the troop, its always a married man, with children of his own, a fine pillar in the community, etc... These are the demons

Who has the best Troop Web Site?

Silly me, and I thought it was against BSA policy to identify a scout by first and last name in a photo posted on the web. And even if its not, it certainly isnt smart from a youth protection issue -
The best part of being human, is that people expect you to make mistakes... Anyway, in a previous post in this thread I said that an Eagle Project cannot take place on Boy Scout property. Well, I should have watched my phraseology (Jeepers). I should have said, An Eagle project cannot benefit the Scouts Troop or the BSA. Carry on

Well, changing hearts and minds is a difficult task. You said you were able to change the BOR process a little, here is something you might want to add. According to the "Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures" book, 33088D (2002 Printing) page 30 If the BOR decides against passing the boy, the reasons must be explained to him, what he has done that needs to be reworked and improved. The BOR must then schedule another date to review the boys progress and a followup letter must be sent to the scout confirming the agreements reached on the actions necessary for advancement. Should the scout disagree with the descions, the appeal process must be explained to the scout. That would be the next "thing" to add to the BOR process. If you complete the requirements, you advance, stumbling blocks added by perhaps well meaning Troops do the entire program a dis-service

Just a side note, Fundraising, no matter how much money, demonstrating all sorts of Leadership is not an Eagle project. Fundraising is not an allowed Eagle Project on a national level just as the Eagle Project may not be on Scout Property.
