Week-long Service ("Mission") Projects
OldGreyEagle replied to SemperParatus's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The Venture crew has done a Habitat for Humanity week for the last three years. Habitat does require the youth be 16 so while most crew members can attend, it would leave out younger scouts. Those who have gone have loved it -
Gee, thats a hard one, I mean with the blisters from the 20 mile hikes, the burned food from the new Scout Patrol weekend, the freezing nights during Klondike and the exasperations of guiding the PLC through the annual planning seminar, if I didnt rate it a solid 10, I'd be nuts! I'm just crazy about this stuff

Is there such a thing a Lone Venturing?
OldGreyEagle replied to OAEagleDude's topic in Venturing Program
AS far as I know, there is no Lone Venturing Program, but here's a thought. Start a Crew. You said you are going to school. There has to be other students there who like outdoors stuff, and heck, you can have Venture members who dont like outdoor stuff. Thats why there are sports, arts and hobbies, youth ministries , and sea scouts. Anyway, you need a CO and you can get started. Stay small and then build, what a great way to meet people ! -

Non BSA Scouting Program in the US
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
But doesnt the BSA's Rules and Regulations just fit in with the times? The US Constitution has 4543 words (more or less, I never did trust a word processing program to count words) and the 2005 IRS tax code is purported to have over 10 million words. So how do as citizens know we are doing taxes corectly ? We must, we all sign we did. -

Cub uniform pants - why does no one wear them?
OldGreyEagle replied to Rip Van Scouter's topic in Uniforms
Trev old fellow, I must take exception to your words "...The aims are Building Character, Fostering Citizenship, and Promoting Personal Fitness. The methods should be adjusted to fit the circumstances..." See the Scout program is using the Methods to reach the Aims. One may acheieve the aims of charactor, citizenship and personal fitness by many different methods and while the results would be laudable, they wouldnt be scouting. Its the unique combination of Advancement Ideals Patrols Outdoors Adult Association Personal Growth Leadership development Uniform that make the prgram what it is (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

Way kewl, I wonder if they have a football team, I would think the name would be the Fighting Scouts (not any more oxymoronic that the Fighting Quakers of Penn) I wouldnt love to play roverback, that way I could blitz the quarterback and still hold the values of BP dear -
Non BSA Scouting Program in the US
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am not sure where this is going to lead, but this is from the adult application form In signing this application, I have read the attached information and apply for registration with the Boy Scouts of America. I agree to comply with the Charter and Bylaws, and the Rules and Regulations of the Boy Scouts of America and the local council. I affirm that the information I have given on this form is true and correct. So we agreed to follow the rules and regulations of the Boy Scouts of America, is this what you mean ? -
SO while this is off topic, it fits in the grooming line: So I had been with the troop for about a year and we were on a WhiteWater Weekend. The outfitter had a huge campground and routinely ran "scout" weekends, well, it was a scout week end and that included Girl Scouts as well. So, the troop had girl scout units on either side of it. Sunday morning arrives, and as I climb out of my tent I see the girls in one site lining up to brush their teeth and are combing their hair. The other site is boiling water and mixing it with cooler water and the girls are washing their hair. The scouts meanwhile have their dirty grubby faces buried in cereal bowls. I walked up to one of the tables and commented on how the girls were practicing hygiene and about how in a year I had never seem a scout to anything close to that or even had I seen a comb. One scout answered in between shoveling cereal in his mouth, "we dont do that stuff, we dont have to, we are men"

No, not the Royal Rangers, this was a scouting unit which held cose to BPs teaching PS Not the Spiral Scouts either(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
All this talk about the format of the Scouting program and founders got me thinking, I remember awhile back there were a few posts about a Non BSA scouting program that had a few units in the US. The premise of these units were that the BSA was not the program BP had in mind and this program was closer if not it. Does anybody else remember that? I think there was a website, anybody know?

If you were not such a good Boy Scout ?
OldGreyEagle replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I would have been involved with NOLS or some other outdoor program Did you notice the three answers thus far all have Eagle in the poster's name? Is that what is called leaving a legacy ? -
Now, when did it actually work?
OldGreyEagle replied to Zahnada's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Why isnt boy scouts culturally relevant anymore? or at leaast what are the reasons given by "some" ? -
Trevorum Check out BSA Publication #33065 "Scouting For Youth with Learning Disabilities" and "A Scoutmaster's Guide to Working with Souts with Disabilities." That's BSA publication 33056. These should get you a start.

Bob White and Ed, I don't know about the rest of the Forum, but I do beleive its time you two stopped picking at each other.

Actually I would think since B-P was a British citizen, I see him as the International Hero of Scouting. Seton, Beard, and Boyce would be the local national heroes. And if you have scouts who dont know who Beard, Seton and boyce is, just whose fault is that ? If your scouts dont have a scouting hero, just whose fault is that ? Steve Fosset is one I can think of, Steven Spielburg is another and of course John Glenn and Gerald Ford. I know this has been covered before, but rehashing old stuff is what we do best, or it should be as its what we do a whole bunch of the time, but the best PR the BSA can have is a well run local youth program turning out citizens of charactor with a good health ethic who continue to make ethical decisions over their lifetime becasue the program instilled in them the values of the oath and law. The people running those programs are the heroes, recognized or not -
John D, what does First Class First year mean to you ?
-
Possibly, but here in the US there is this First Amendment thing and we kinda like it...
