BDU = Battle Dress Uniform Its the nylonish looking pants SWAT teams wear amoung other military like organizaitons

Just to beat another dimension of a dead horse, I ask what do you want the uniform to be? How do you see it being used as form follows function or something quippy like that I see the field (dress) uniform as something that is used for meetings, parades, COurts of Honor, anyplace where identificaiton as a scout/scouter is important. I dont see a role for my concept of a uniform in the back country, but thats just me.

YoungSpiked and OldGrey welcome another Eagle!

My son, the renown YoungSpikedEagle, had his run in with scout bullies. YoungSpiked had his health problems and was so skinny I had to stand life guard when he took a shower least he wash down down the drain, and the thing about him having to have a flush toilet, well it wasnt as much the flush toilet as it was the running water put a big ol' X on his forehead as far as being a bully target. That and he and I stayed in the same tent for the first three years assured he would get picked on. Many times we discussed him quitting, but he stuck it out. He saw a red beret on Ebay and wanted it. I got it for him and he started to weat it. The two bullies were unmerciless in their ridicule, they taunted him, insulted him, did all they could but he wore the red beret with pride. In about 3 months the bullying had stopped and YoungSpiked was accepted because he wouldnt back down. Bullies are hard to deal with, each kid is different, sometimes its a cry for attention and sometimes the kid is just a flegling sociopath. Sometimes the kid talking back is all it takes, other times a physical altercation is required to settle matters (never a first choice, but sometimes the only option)

lets see, 3, 4, 5 percent all mentioned and not really clear what or how the numbers are arrived at, the interesting thing, at least to me, is the notion that the Eagle Scout requirements are so watered down and there are "Eagle Mills" out there giving away the Eagle rank "like candy". Yet with the most liberal number of 15%, that means 85% dont earn Eagle. yet we have so many here who worry about desecrating the rank, not sure why

We went to war with Saddam. He had mocked 17 UN resolutions. The goverment thought he had WMD, John Kerry on tape said Saddam had WMD. Turns out maybe he didn't. The problem is, say we did nothing, the UN would be on like resolution 25 by now. And lets say an Atomic bomb/Anthrax/something happened on American soil and is linked back to Iraq. How many people now screaming for GW's blood because we didnt find any WMD's would be screaming for his blood for ignoring all the signs that he had WMD and was willing to work with terrorists? Its a no win situation. GW chose action, he could just as well have chosen inaction. Inaction could have resulted in another terrorist attack on American soil, or perhaps nothing. We will never know. Back when Hitler was running roughshod over parts of Europe, Chamberlain took the apeasement route, and WWII happened. If Chamberlain would not have backed down, how different would the world be? Would the war have been shorter because Germany would not have had the stockpiles of supplies? Would the atomic bomb had been developed and used as it was? We don't know because what happned happned and anything else is speculation. No war is just, because in any war innocent poeple will die. But, the one thing we can do is tell the men and women who put their lives on the line for us is that Damn it, we are proud and thankful and indebted to you all the days we live. If anyone is seen monkeying with whatever I adorn my car with, bought from where-ever I want, they had better know I wont be taking their vandalism as an expression of first amendment rights

Did the BSA ignore molestation warnings?
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
I only know what I read in the papers, or Time & newsweek, or the cable newshows, so somebody tell me if I am wrong ( Like I have to ask) But i thought it was generally considered a trueism that pedophilia is pretty much incurable, and that is the basis of Megan type laws, that the rate of recidivism of pedophiliacs is like 99.99% ? -

And just for clarification, when the ACLU brings a suit, any suit, just who is it that determines the outcome of the legal action, the ACLU or the Government in the form of the Judicial branch ?

the BSA has recognized the following religions as having religious awards programs that may be worn on the uniform, Armenian Baha'i Buddhist Hindu Islam Jewish Meher Baba Zoroastrian To me, over 20% of the offered programs are not Western European based relgions so I am not so sure that characterization is accurate(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

POLES FOR PIONEERING PROJECTS
OldGreyEagle replied to MEKANIC13's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I must apologize, when I read your comment, I almost spit out the czarnina I was eating along with my kielbasa sandwich. Krackow, Poland is the second largest city of Polish speaking people in the world, number one of course is Chicago. I have to go now, my batch of kolckis is done and I have to tend to them -
"OGE, your statement begs the question - for a Scout with ADD/ADHD, who is the medication for, the Scout or the Troop?" of course my answer is a resounding "you betcha'" BTW, I should add the CC of the troop I serve is a pediatrician with a huge love of the scouting program. She encorages her patients to join scouts for the activities and benefits and so when she goes to summer camp, she has two lockers, one for her stuff, the other for the troop meds. As she has a DEA number, she registers with the Camp Nurse and she dispenses. Normally by Thursday there is a huge movement by the adults to add ritalin to the bug juice, but it has never happened, .... yet

POLES FOR PIONEERING PROJECTS

Have you tried Krackow? -
I like using a mixture of couscous and foil packed protein. Couscous are great, you boil water, put the couscous in, add the flavor pack and its ready. The grain is so small, it cooks virtually instantly and a variety of flavors, such as pine nut, herb chicken, basil, are available. The I add a 4 oz pack of tuna, shrimp, crab, spam, etc and voila, a great tasty trail meal, in the same pot as you boiled the water. Now, to be sure, you take the couscous out of the box and put it in a ziploc bag which becomes the garbage bag to pack out the foil container. The couscous provide a warm meal packed with carbos and protein, as they used to say, try it, you'll like it

Alternate Swimming Requirement for First Class
OldGreyEagle replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Working with Kids
This may cause some debate, but what if the scout wore a full face mask, passed the first class test and then never went near water again? I am not saying count the swim test as making him a swimmer, but count it as completing the rank requirement. If he wants to go on a troop "water" event he has to pass the swimmers test like everybody else. -
I understand its the individual's responsibility to take their meds, but that works with allergies ... gee my eyes are watering, I need my pill.. But when the problem is ADD/ADHD the Troop is generally much more aware of when its pill time than the scout is

What do/does you/your son want?
-
NJ, good post, as succint an explanation as I have seen. An addition I would offer is the definition of what constitutes legal versus illegal "discrimination" as that seems to be crux of the matter. Doubtless you all have seen the disclaimer on multiple want ads that so and so compnay is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on Race, Creed, Sex, Age, physical disability, etc. Having listed Creed means you cant say no Catholics or only Jews and it also protects those with an abscence of religion, this means you can't require someone to "Have a religion, any religion" to be hired. These are the protected factors. So Schools can't discriminate based on these factors. Since "intelligence" is not listed, the National Honor Society is a go, since sex is listed, boys can, and have, played on field hockey teams (usually as long as they wear the official uniform:: read skirt:: and they do). Now someone will say disability is there, therefore a student with MS has to be allowed on the football team. And actually thats right, at the local high school there is a student with MS who is an equipment manager, he is on the team. OK, what if he wants to play? He has to earn his way on the field just like anyone else. If he wants to be quarterback, he has to prove he is better than any other quarterback on the team, which I dont think will happen, but if his footspeed, throwing accuracy, range etc. rivaled the other players, the coach could not say you have MS, you cant play. The same thing with a blind shortstop, its not his blindness that stops him, its the inability to make the play. In the area of pennsylvania I live wrestling is a dominate sport. There are countless stories of blind wrestlers who do quite well because the rules of the sport dont exclude their participation or put them in physical danger The point of all this? Yes, schools do discriminate, legally, on some factors, but they CANNOT discriminate on those factors as dictated by the government and Creed, (or abscence there of) is always there.

Ed, Merlyn, as much as I enjoy you guys ripping into each other, I think every situation calls for a time to say enough is enough. Ed, I know you enjoy baiting Merlyn but do you have to contimue to do it here? Merlyn, I respect your right to have a view point different from mine, and a right to post here, but c'mon, what do you get from calling Ed stupid ? If you have been reading the forum Merlyn, you know there is a core of scouters who agrere with you Public Schools should not charter BSA units, continuing to bicker with Ed, who is so blatantly baiting you is beyond comprehension. Do you guys think you can discuss this without either calling each other stupid OR arguing the same point that has been explained for over two years now?
