  1. You may wish to read the "Tale of Two trailers" thread in this section as well as do a search on the word Trailers
  2. Is it an offical Boy Scout campaign hat? It is my understanding that any official part of the uniform may be worn, regardless of age
  3. The adult would wear one knot, but with the Cub Scout "device" (little pin) and Boy Socut "device" (another little pin"
  4. I dont know what size community you are in, but the Eagle candidate could see if he could find an orphanage or perhaps a shelter for the homeless and organize a party or show, either 4th of July or Christmas depending on his schedule or somehting and then recruit cast, crew and assemble what interests you as a show Good luck on your project
  5. I went to Camp School last year at Hawk Mountain. In a week I became certified NRA in rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader as well as Camp School trained in Archery. Thats the program for Shooting Sports directors and know what? it was fun!
  6. Prairie_Scouter, I think I see your point about the cafeteria and it started me thinking. I have a staunchly vegan friend, runs a Vegan Food Store. When you read the literature on the diet and the almost resulting "lifestyle" one can get quite enthused. With all the grains, and other products its quite an interesting place. The problem is, the changes we are discussing would be like me telling my friend you have a great store here, great location and clientele and I bet business would really boom if you just sold a little beef.(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. SO then, Dug, are you saying that a national publciity campaign o n scouting would be a bad idea?
  8. So, while I was operating the chain saw today clearing downed trees, I was thinking. What if the BSA got Steven Spielberg (ok, its a fantasy and lets assume he would do it) to do a 60-minute documentary entitled THE BSA TODAY. Commentators in it would include (for fantasy purposes) 5 of your most admired public figures that would explain the BSA Mission statement. Then they would present the goals, and the methods. Now, as hard as it is to believe, part of this fantasy is making all this interesting to the target audience (male 11-13, the Venture edition comes out next year). For this part, Hollywood magic makes it possible. John Williams composes a wondrous soul stirring theme that the youth are humming as they leave the theatre and stream in droves to join the BSA. Existing troops are deluged by applications and boys wanting to be scouts. Parents want to be sure their children are presented with the best possible program. They ask how many of your leaders are trained. They want to know if Boards of Review are done like in the movie, if their kids can actually elect their own leaders, if everything that is presented in the movies, whose script of course was based on the The Book, is the way you do it. Some people here would have to say no, we dont do it by the book because here at Troop XXX, we have a better way. We dont let scouts earn merit badges until some adult who knows nothing about your child decides its time, we dont have scouts elect their own leaders because our SM is too much on a power trip to allow that. Other scouts join because the leaders say the words the parents want to hear, but about 2 months of boring program, and remember that giant sucking sound Ross Perot talked about? Its the sound of youth leaving the program because National made a promise that local units cant provide. The BSA loses all credibility for those parents, the kids and those kids kids. Until we can assure ourselves that the BSA program is offered on a consistent basis, I am not so sure a national publicity program would work. Look at your Troop, look at neighboring Troops, Think of an ad that national might run and think if you could meet the expectaions of the youth who would be influenced by that ad. If we have anyone out there I think they would agree a whiz-bang media campaign is great, but if you have a problem offering a consistent quality product, you are in deep trouble (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  9. Its been a few years I think, they fly by so quickly, two of my favorite all time TV shows were in their pinnacle of popularity. I loved Kevin Sorbo as Herculues and Lucy Lawless as Xenia, Warrior Princess. I loved these shows, they would have a plot line concerning Julius Ceasar one week and another with David and Goliath. The wove Greek and Roman mythology with a touch of the Celtics as well. They were popular because people wanted to watch them. Let me repeat that, they were popular because people wanted to watch them, as is the case with all TV shows, people want to watch them. If they dont want to watch them, they dont (can you say Hello Larry) I guess pantheism isnt a turnoff
  10. Lemme see, I am a 11 year old kid, I love model rockets, space and all kids of science. I am not to crazy about the outdoors, but its alright. I join Boy Scouts because I want to buils a model rocket for the Space Exploration Merit badge and I want to do Chemistry and Physics and what do you mean I have to wait until first class! Thats not written anywhere,I quit Yeah, makes sense
  11. The argument that a second class scout can't be in charge of a first class scout would work, if this was the military. If we take that line of thinking to the ultimate end, then an Eagle would always have to be a SPL or a patrol leader. Does that make sense? What does the Scoutmaster Handbook say about electing the senior patrol leader? The key here is election, not selection. The scoutmaster was/is wrong. What do you get with a selected SPL, especially when another scout was elected? Apathy, poot attendance and a troop on a downward slide. Dang, does that doesnt sound good! What can you do? Tough questions. Its easy to sit online and hurl opinions and tell you what the rules are, another to get it done. How many other people feel as you do? How active is the Charter Organizaiton Rep?
  12. You are still wrong, no amount of rationalization will make a wrong right. All your explanation tells me is a group of adults can't/won't run a program like they promised they would. Was a new scout patrol program ever done? Why was the committee promoting either merit badges or advancement, what did the boys want to do, did anybody care to ask? This stuff just makes me go beserk!
  13. scoutldr, I agree about the CD's, he might even insist trained leaders get them free
  14. ljnrsu dispite all the rationalization you can muster, you are in opposition of BSA policy, yeah you can run things pretty much the way you are, but the Troop you serve is wrong in dictating when merit badges can be earned.
  15. I seem to have hit a nerve. Good. Makes life more interesting And I resent have someone yanking my chain, you can do it once, but not twice, pleasant scouting
  16. Prairie_Scouter I have no idea where you get your ideas about the BSA, but you are going to have to do more that just say you think the BSA would be happy if it only was comprised of Chirst based relions. In all the outrageous proclamations I have read here that has to be in the top 2.
  17. Ok, as much fun as this has been, rather than pull this plug now, tell you what. I will close this thread early Sat before I leave for the Troop service project early saturday so get your last thoughts in, hopefully focused on the topic and not each other.
  18. "Bob, you really need this tool." Gee Acco, I didnt know your name was bob
  19. Gee Ed, crtisizing people over spelling on the net is so uncool, you spend enough time arguing with Bob as it is, we dont need to add typography to your laundry list of whats wrong with him
  20. FScouter, not to start a brew-ha-ha- (sp!) But I didnt see where it says the blouse should be tucked in. Now, on ladies as represented in the illustrations, I can apperciate the tuck in style, however, ladies in the more rubenesque mold might do well to not tuck Just an opinion, unless I missed tucked in which is them the way its to be done
  21. I wonder if these are the same whiners that Nutz4Scouting is delaing with, in the same genetic pool (shallow end) at the very least. A husband and wife are willing to take a week off both jobs (presumably) and move the household out to Camp for 7 days and becuse their kids are all scouts this somehow makes it wrong? or bad? As wingnut says, let the whiners come out and balance off the leadership or shut up
  22. Ed, I cant tell you how much I enjoy your posts and repartee. I have noticed that you used to post a lot on the forum at meritbadge.net and the Scouting.Com Forum and you havent been to either for awhile, I have seen some topics discussed there that I know you would be just the person to address. As always, yours in scouting
  23. Gee Nutz, I'll bet its like getting kicked in the stomach, or worse. The problem is, as you say, if the program is over in May, I am not sure what the Pack could do or should do if anything. Next, I would think about what the Cubmaster said. A couple parents, makes me wonder about how big the Den is, and how many parents think you are doing fine and wouldn't have any idea about what was going on if you wrote a letter. I have never seen any letter written in such circumstances ever reach the intended the target. If there are a few people who think you should be out, your letter will only serve to confirm their feelings of you and could distnace those who like what you have done. My advice, laugh it off, you know you cant please all of the people all of the tme
  24. See Dug, I knew we could find common ground
  25. Prairie Scouter Having worked in the Medical Field for over 30 years I understand about being sued, but I didnt ask about being sued, I asked about having the COs responsible for judgments against the BSA based on the actions of the leaders in their troops. Scoutndad I have no idea of how my question digressed anything. It was a question that I would have liked to have been answered before I gave my answer. Next what the heck does the Catholic Churchs history have to do with this question? Next you will soon learn you cant control how people will respond to posts, if you read these forums you will know I am Roman Catholic and have often posted that I would not have a problem if gay leaders were allowed in scouting. I may not do it so much in the recent past, but I learned awhile ago my views were not going to change anyones mind. As far as my fitness of a moderator I would think you could wait at least month before you make the assessment. In the recent past I have not posted my views on a lot of issues because of my role as a moderator and I take great umbrage at your posting. Now, can we get on with the thread?
