I agree Trails End is at the end of the trail. Is there a product that Boy Scouts could sell nationally? I think the idea was to made Trails End Popcorn equal the Girl Scouts Cookies. If that wont happen, and it wont, what could take its place?

Air Conditioned Eagle Encampment

I've been off on a Campout, where did this occur? -
So Seattle, are you saying that its OK for a COR to knowingly not follow the BSA rules of membership because they want a specific person to be scoutmaster and if that person is gay/atheist and as long as no one finds out, thats OK? Because if it is OK, we have just proven to Merlyn we are the pond scum sucking pigs he tells us we are and I cant argue the point

Getting adults involved making outings happen
OldGreyEagle replied to noname's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I dont know why it would be hard to find adults to get involved, recently we have painted a picture of what is needed: First off, no experience as a Cub Leader, because of course Cub Leaders are bad, and will turn the Troop into a WebIII program without a doubt. Maybe after a break they can come back, but the jury is pretty much still out on that They need to wear the Uniform, but only to the local parochial standards. I mean, if soneone wears a sharp uniform, all parts in the plces they belong down to the socks and belt and hat, well then. There has to be something wrong there somewhere. And if he/she comes wearing knots? WOW, time to run faster away than MIB should be running from his situation Course they need to be trained, so we will send them the Distrct/Council Training which we all know is run by dunderheads and pretty much well acomplished all around idiots. And then when they come back spouting rules about no sheath knives, or conversely, you can have a sheath knife, the unit institutional instruction begins as they learn not how its done in the BSA, but how we do it here. Of course, no one will help the District teach things correctly because somebody tried to 5 years ago and two trainig chairs back and they were rebuffed so its no use to try If a lot of adults want to come on Campouts, well we cant have that. We limit adults on the events because thats what we do. We want you when we want you. Not before we need you and will whine how unresponsive you are when you could not telepathically know we need you Dont know why out units are not brimming over with adults(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
How could the US (land of the free) allow slavery for so many decades?
-
lets be clear, in a volunteer organization I never thought it prudent to limit the number of volunteers Now, the volunteers have to know what to expect and how to behave. They let the youth run the show and the adults have a good time. In the troop I served, we used to have almost a 2:1 ration of boys and adults. If we had 30 youth, we would have 15 adults. Parents would come and say wow you have a lot of adults and you guys always have such a good time. We got them interested in being an ASM or a committee member. Many said, with all the people I see on evernts, I know if I get involved, I wont be the only one working. It worked for us. I have to repeat, the adults have to let the program run as it is supposed to. If a parent started to hover, a few other adults would cull them off. Had a few issues, but not many and nothing we couldnt handle had a troop in the distrct that the scoutmaster and his single ASM would show up with the troop and as the boys played they set up grand gate ways as that is what scouting is about and set up a troop kitchen and then cooked and took down the stuff on Sunday. They said they did it so often it took hardly anytime at all. Not sure they understood why we asked(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Inadequate health coverage unfairly punishes

I have to ask, particularly after seeing this morning that Arizona wants to pass a law that employers dont have to cover contraceptives if they feel doing so is against their moral beliefs. Coverage wouldnt be denied, the employee would have to explain why they were needed Does anyone know if Viagra or any of the medications that treat ED (Erectile Dysfunction) are covered by Medicare or other Insurance Carriers? WHat about your state Medicaid, do they cover Viagra? I wonder why this hasnt been asked before -
I always thought the drunken sailor was a male Beavah beat me to the Godwin's Rule, in the old days I would have closed the thread and declared Camilam the loser because he brought up Nazi's first but there is nuance in what he said. I am glad Beavah cured me of those impulses If we just dropped the uniform wouldnt life be a dream sweetheart?

Getting adults involved making outings happen
OldGreyEagle replied to noname's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Wow, all I can say is wow Having a unit committee actually put a limit on how many adults can come on an outing? I would love to be in a position where I would be able to do that. We don't want cub leaders in boy scouts because, well they are cub leaders, we dont want to many adults around because they mess with the troop dynamincs and by the way we are as mad as hell that no adult steps up to help us old guys out I think I now understand the phrase cognitive disonance -
One thing to remember is Venturing Crews may go huning as an approved activity so if a Crew does plan a trip to Canada to hunt moose, the first time the youth sights in a Moose should not be first time they have ever seen something other than a target in their sights.
-
OK, a spin off as I didnt want to distract the discussion. Beavah asks "Is it against da rules to use representations of cartoon humans as targets? " At Camp School I was told that the scouts could not shoot at representations of animate objects. Ok, no pictures of your personally selected political figure, but what about cartoons? Mickey Mouse? Could a Venturer training for a Moose Hunt in Canada shoot at Bullwinkle? My initial thought is no, you can't but I could be wrong

And in honor of Ed Mori, also, be mighty careful of a friendly stranger in a black sedan...

After all its March 15th, beware of Romans wearing knives...

I have to ask If the scout had shown up with his book, but not "sharp in uniform and sash" would the Board of Review been held?

If they are following protocol, he will be wearing a PFD at all times -
One posible quick Mission Statement could be "Venturing-its what YOU make of it" and I'll tell you why If you join a Drum and Bugle corp, you will not be surprised to be drumming or bugling if you join Football, you will be wearing shoulder pads at some point If you join a Dance Academy, you will be on your toes (if its ballet) if you join a Pilates class, you will be doing, well, pilated Kids programs are pretty self-evident in what they are about. Band Camp, Computer Camp, etc. Tells you what the focus is. Venturing is not that way. Venturing is the One program where it can be about what the youth want to do. And that takes some getting used to, by the youth at the very least. Ask a group of youth what they want to do and you may get bumps on a log for a very long time. They may never have actually been asked that by adults before. Once they understand you are for real, they have great ideas but it takes awhile to get them to believe you are serious. You can have a Venuring Crew that does a lot of climbing and as the Crew population changes perhaps it does more white water, or becomes service oriented. All it takes is a good strong nucleus of kids and adults who want to make it happen. The Venturing OAth is As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world. We found adventure taking a ferry from Hoboken to the World Trade Center, going to the Museum of Modern Art and standing outside the "Ghostbuster Library". And the subway back under the Hudson. We found advenure at the "Etiquette Dinner" where the staff of the Gourment Resturant operated by the Community College Culinary Arts dept explained proper manners to the Crew. Kids who knew they werent supposed to have elbows on the table, but dont want to ask mom about how to eat in public when its not mickey Dees anymore. After all, these kids are going to proms, older siblings weddings, they want to know and we helped them learn. Possibly the best thing we did was teach the young ladies how to change a tire. Not something commonly seen, but the girls had some friends get stranged because they had a flat and not a clue about how to change it. The guys showed how it was done, with some coaching, and we went over how the various jacks work and where to find them. I think the guys learned as much as the ladies actually because they wanted to know. Its Venturing, its supposed to be hard to explain(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

BD, did you think I was referring to you? I wasn't I thought that Cub Scouts was supposed to be a family oriented program. Thats why you need a parent/guradian on camping trips. Its not supposed to be the boy's journey, its the family's journey. WHen they transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, then it becomes the boys program. Until then CUbs focuses on the family. or did I misunderstand?
-
There is almost a palpable disdain that flows from some of the posters on this forum concerning Cub Scout leaders and their program. Certainly not always scoutlike but it is real and its there. When you consider the percentage of Boy Scouts who were Cub Scouts, it makes one wonder why the foundatin of the supply chain is so lowly regarded. Cubbers, if I have never said it before, Thank You for all you do in introducing the boys to the world of scouting. Your efforts are the reason there are Boy Scouts' I had thought we were all scouters, working in the area that held the most interest for us, some at Packs, Troops, Crew, Ship, etc. I never thought anyone was "better" than anyone else.

Powder Horn and ASMs
OldGreyEagle replied to AJR2305GDC's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Well, an Assistant Scoutmaster can take Powderhorn, then again, a youth Venturer may also take Powderhorn. So, take it as either -
One would certainly have to wonder why with a National organization as screwed up as the BSA and with local Scouting officials so blatantly incompetent and greedy why there are adult volunteers (us) still around in the first place

Your Council is paying Board Members over 100, 000 a year? When was a Board member I had to pay for the food before they let me in the lunch meal and nobody I know got paid.
-
Quick idea, Find out the cost of a week long resident camp in the interest area of you son. Subtract the cost of one week at Summer Camp. The difference is the value of having volunteer leaders take the youth to Summer Camp

So why not just drop the uniform and be done with it, or is this one of those "de facto" things where the uniform will go away on the local unit level and we just dont talk about i
