  1. As I have commented from time to time on other threads, the Council I serve set an expectation that Cubmaster, Scoutmasters and Venture Crew Advisors all be trained before they could recharter in 2005. That occurred. The one casualty was a Crew where the advisor said he would rather fold the Crew than take the training. The Crew folded. For 2006 the expectation is that all the Committee Chairs will take the training. Seems to be catching on with no loud protests. One of the effects of these requirements is that the training committees have grown in number and experience. The next question is being brought to the Exectuve Board of the Council. What's next? Require Asst leaders to be trained? Committee Member's? I think it should be the Charter Organization Representatives, these are the folks with the most power in the BSA, and many have quite the lassez faire attitude towards their units, at least from what I conjecture from here. So, how hard would it be to get your COR trained? In COR, not basic leader essentials, just to be an COR
  2. Dang I love it when he talks like that
  3. OK folks, quick and to the point, we are not going down the road that seems to be traveled all too frequently. I ask for inflammatory comments to be stricken from posts in the future and yes I will decide what is inflammatory
  4. I got the Troops interest up by asking them to identify the scout who would grow up to be "Snake Pliskin" in the Escape from New York and Escape from LA movies
  5. On his marker B-P has placed the trail symbol for I have gone home, yet some people argue that B-P really didnt place a lot of emhasis on the religious aspect of scouting and that it has been a recent thing
  6. I think the key is that Philmont, Sea Base, etc, is open to parental participation IF they meet the participation criteria. I "went" with YoungSpiked Eagle to the 2001 National Jamboree, I was an Asst Scoutmaster in one troop, he was a patrol leader in another. A few friends of mine "took" their sons to Philmont, they were the adults and their sons were in the Crew. Likewise when a contingent went to the Boundary Waters, there were father and son attendees, but the parents were there for all the boys. How many scout memories are built on what I did in scouts with my dad and what I will want to do with my son? If need be, participation has to be restricted to those who can safely do the activity, but this isnt always so.
  7. And Miki, what does it say on his marker? (yes I have a reason for asking)
  8. Believe, the officail BSA policy is that all unit activities are open to all parents and there are no secret societies. One could make the argument that a Class 5 whitewater excursion is not for everyone or that some activties have limits on the participants, but the fear you imply is why the BSA says its open. Various units screw around with BSA policy, but them, they are generally screwed up anyway. Be active, Be aware, and have fun !
  9. try this link http://www.scoutsongs.com/lyrics/onmyhonor.html you should be able to download Burl Ives singing it
  10. I read this as the scouts had to come up with their own projects, as a build up to the Eagle project, SPL142, am I right or way off ?
  11. I am not sure anyone here condoned Satan worship as an acceptable BSA type relgion. If they did, I missed it and as I have already said, I sometimes miss things. I think what is more likely happening is there are inquieries as to how certain you are of the boys beleifs and perhaps inadequacy, and least on my part, of giving advice on a subject that really needs a professional approach. I asked about the animal killing because if that was true, you could get the civil authorites involved and perhaps they could help the boy. I can see where you are looking for help, but this may not be the best place for the depth of problem you present. Who here thinks Satan Worship is acceptable in the BSA?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  12. Sad to say I think you and your troop is being held hostage by perhaps well meaning adults who don't have a clue. There are no such rules that says a troop can change what they want. If there are such rules, ask in which publicaiton they may be found, because I would like to see them as well. Making you do your "own" service projects is adding to the rank requirements and it is against BSA policy
  13. Sorry Marge, I lost track of who said what. I dont know much about the occult, although I am not sure the scout oath and law match well with satanism, but I could be wrong
  14. DO you know for sure he has killed animals for his "services"?
  15. And a PS to that is that Unc earned his Eagle at a relativley young age, 13-14 I believe, I guess sometimes younger scouts can earn it and appreciate it. ::snappy scout salute to Unc::
  16. Marge, I want to be sure I understand what you are saying, you have scouts sign a contract? Could you be more definitive as to what is in the contract and the reason that the COmmittee felt this step is necessary?
  17. I hope you all dont take this personal, but if we all ever move to a "scouter.com housing development" and form a troop. I hope you understand there will be no committee or other meetings at my domicile. So, if Playboy is bad, what if Cosmopolitan is found? The New Republic, Naitonal Enquirer, and then the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition ? What if you notice lots of empty beer cans in the garage and a generously stocked bar? What if I have an interest in greek mythology and have several nudes in my house? Remember, when most pedophilia cases come up, its not the flashy out of the closet flamer that is caught nor the neighborhood drunk/ne'r do well its the straight laced devoted father and husband, I am not sure you can make a case for magazines or decorating style
  18. If a Boy Scout joins a Crew as a first class scout, he may earn Star, Life and Eagle as a Scout or as a Venturer. (if he joins as a Star, he can earn Life and Eagle as a acout or Venturer) etc. The key is joining as a First Class scout or higher rank. The First Class scout thing also kills any shot of a girl earning Eagle,as she cant become a first class scout. But, she may work in her Ranger, Quest, Gold, and Silver awards.
  19. Ok, for an opening you need to sing a few songs about heroes, and here are my favorites There's no need to fear! Underdog is here! when criminals in this world appear and break the laws that they should fear and frighten all who see or hear the cry goes up both far and near for Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! speed of lightning, roar of thunder fighting all who rob or plunder Underdog. Underdog! when in this world the headlines read of those whose hearts are filled with greed who rob and steal from those who need to right this wrong with blinding speed goes Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! speed of lightning, roar of thunder fighting all who rob or plunder Underdog. Underdog! Mr. Trouble never hangs around, when he hears this Mighty sound, Here I come to save the day! That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way! Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right, Mighty Mouse will join the fight! On the sea or on the land, He's got the situation well in hand! Hercules, hero of song and story Hercules, winner of ancient glory fighting for the right fighting with his might with the strength of ten ordinary men Hercules, people are safe when near him Hercules, only the evil fear him softness in his eyes iron in his thighs virtue in his heart fire in every part of the mighty Hercules! Get them started on these, and they will know your theme is heroes
  20. DO you mean patriotic heroes? if so Onehour has excellent suggestions, if not, what direction/theme would you like to go with?
  21. You know, upon further review, I think the poll function was taken out due to the bad experiences the site had with polls, and thats saying a lot !
  22. I am not sure one can distinguish the nature of God using human language, concepts and experience. To think humans can define and judge whether or not God is perfect or imperfect is absurd. I would direct those interested in free will discourses to study St Augistine and Thomas Aquinas and then get back to us when you digested it all. I think April 24, 2010 sounds about right
  23. See, I would say Krakow, but that crack got me in trouble last time... In the past people have tried to do polls, the problem is most times the questions that are asked and the choices given are not what the readers want to use. usually its a one sided poll, such as when do you think GW stopped beating his wife A. 20 yrs ago B 30 yrs ago C. 15 yrs ago D. he hasnt stopped Things like that tend to discourage real discourse. Then there are polls that seem to be good, but get internetted. I tried one once a few years back on the homesexual issue. I naively thought a poll posted here would give results of the thoughts of the readers of the forum. Turns out a link to the poll was placed on a web site with invitations to vote and the results were staggering in total and in bias. I am not saying that polls arent good, I just havent seen many that gather the data the originator wants to get. But you can start a poll like a thread and let the festivities begin
  24. With all the singing to get things back going on, its easy to see how such ignorant traditions get started, as Bugs Bunny would say, what a bunch of maroons
  25. Lets be fair and balanced, the "tap out" was stopped not because a few people "complained", but because shouders were separated and clavicles broken and the adults supervising the youth couldnt or didnt control the situation. The practice of turning a bobcat upside down "used" to be a pack tradition too and was prohibited after a number of injuries and lawsuits. It wasnt politial correctness that changed things, it was the results of BSA members who didnt consider the consequences of their actions
