  1. Gern, it makes sense to me that a scout who would want to go to the Jamboree, and do what it takes to get there would be a fairly gung ho scout and a fairly gung ho scout would most likely be in the OA
  2. See, now I was agreeing with Semper on this one, the most important rank is the one the scout wants to acheive. The key is important to the scout, not anyone else. Obviously earning Eagle would be considered important, but if you achieve Eagle just because you want to put it on a resume/college application, you missed the whole point.
  3. Why would anyone first take steps to punish the scout when it was Administrative Rules that were violated? In all the discussions of this sort, the question seems to be pointed at the scout, what can we do to him, how can we take things away from him when it was adult misbehavior that caused the situation. How about suspending those adults "privileges" regarding any scouting advancement work. As far as the scout goes, Boards of Review done with the good faith of the scout should be honored. Merit Badges is another issue. Can a legitimate merit badge counsleor be found who can talk to the non-registered one and the blue card signed? WHat make up would be required? When we say its for the boys, it either is or it isnt
  4. Cuz bouncin' is what Tigers do best!
  5. He could charge a membership fee to post here
  6. I agree with the aboves posters, the date an Eagle becomes an Eagle is the Board of Review date. He starts being eligible for palms from the date of the BOR, not the Court of Honor. If you couldnt received ranks/advance except at Courts of Honor, how would a scout ever receive second Class and First class at the same Court?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  7. I think the OA cermonies effect the belief systems of church sponsored units about as much as the Billiken effects the belief system of the Catholic church
  8. Why not settle on a more mid America approach (geographically speaking) Anything around Chicago, St Louis or Kansas City? WHy not centralize the location, of else move it around like they used too.
  9. Those of you who remember history better than I, help me with this. As I remember it, Gulf War 1 happened because Iraq/Saddam invaded Kuwait. Saddam didnt think anybody would care, he certainly didnt expect a multi-national military force to chase him back to his original border but that did happen. His war with Iran never got much attention, why should taking Kuwait matter? As part of the cease fire/surrender terms Saddam agreed to let the UN inspect his country for weapons of mass destruction. The WMD inspections thing was put in there because Saddam's military has used chemical weapons in the past and it was feared he had stockpiles and would use them again. So it was agreed, Saddam would stay leader of Iraq and he was supposed to let the UN look for WMD. By the way, the WMD inspection thing wasnt an American idea, it was put in by the UN. So, after approx 10 years or so, Iraq is not allowing UN inspectors to search for WMD and the UN passes, what was it? 17 resolutions telling Iraq that it had to honor the treaty it signed or else? I dont know about you guys, but when I have a scout walking around with his hand behind his back and wont show anybody what he is hiding, it raises my alert to suspect something is going on, especially if the scout has acted up before. Saddam was asked, requested and cajoled to let the UN Inspectors do their job, and he refused. So, based on his refusal to do what he said he would do, and based on his personal history, he was removed from power. And we havent found the WMD Now, I ask, if we had not removed Saddam, and a dirty bomb, sarin gas, some kind of horrific event that would make 9/11 look small had occured and it was traced back to Iraq, what would be said about GW now? That he was asleep at the wheel, that he was an idiot for ignoring all the signs that this would happen, that we knew he had WMD, hadnt he used them on his own people? Isnt there a video clip of John Kerry saying Saddam had WMD along with scores of other people? The same people who rip him now for starting the war, would be the people demanding to know why he didnt act. Saddam was not just another despot killing and torturing his own people, he had invaded another country and had used WMD. He was supposed to allow inspections of his country per his agreement, when he refused to allow those inspections, didnt you wonder why? Maybe there were no WMD, maybe they are on trucks in Syria, I dont know and have no clue but its not like Saddam didnt have a history of international violence before Gulf War II

  11. The prisoners at Gitmo were taken from the the field of battle, were armed and were intent on killing Americans. At least thats how I understand it. If I am wrong, enlighten me. Being taken prisoner after shooting at American Forces isnt like shop liting at the local 7-11.
  12. Just for clarity sake, how many US citizens are in Gitmo that checked out the wrong book from the library? I havent heard about any but I have been away
  13. Again, I havent seen anybody here say we should close down borders or prevent immigration, only that immigration should be done legally. yes PS, the statue of liberty has those words, and many read them on the ship on its way to Ellis Island, where they were processed into the country. Perhaps the question should be how do we stop the illegal immigration and yet not turn our backs on people who want to live here, or are these aims mutually exclusive?
  14. You could ask the boys what THEY want to do, what activities woud charge them up. They could form a Venture Patrol and do stuff that the "little guys" cant. This gives the older guys somehting to do they like plus it helps give incentive to the younger scouts to stay and do that kind of stuff when they get older. Remember, a Troop should have three distinct areas of its program, New Scouts, the middle phase I cant remember, and the Veteran scouts I may have made some names up, but by the time the scouts are in high school, the troop should allow a good deal of the older scout proram to be run by, well the scouts. Wait, this boy run stuff could get out of hand
  15. I am not saying they are anything but illegal, which is by definition a crime
  16. Rooster you said This kind of intimacy between two men (or two women) is wrong. A straightforward examination of general biology testifies to this fact. But sometimes biology does things that dont make sense as in anecephaly. Why does nature allow births that cant live? Not that being gay is a defect, but a trait that does not always manifest itself, like albinoism. Why are some left handed or right handed? WHy do some have left eye dominance while others are right eye? How do you explain your favorite color preference? Why do some people love loud metal while others tout the peacful wailing of a steel guitar.
  17. I understand your point SA, but the local paper and I am confounded to provide a link to it, so I will post the entire story here. I understand the republicans and big business have a lot at stake with illegals and apparently so do the democrats, think its time to start a third party, the Citizens? PHILADELPHIA | U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton got a standing ovation Monday at a convention of the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights organization when she pledged support for federal legislation that would make it easier for high school graduates who are illegal immigrants to attend college. Clinton, D-N.Y., made her remarks at the annual convention of the National Council of La Raza, which said it has drawn almost 23,000 people from around the country, including Hispanic leaders from the Lehigh Valley, to the Pennsylvania Convention Center. ''I hope with your help we will make the DREAM Act reality this year,'' said Clinton, a potential candidate for president in 2008. The so-called DREAM Act would give an estimated 65,000 illegal immigrant students who graduate from high school annually legal status that could lead to citizenship. The legislation, which has been supported by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., has been introduced twice but has never come to a vote. Supporters hope it will be reintroduced this year. In her remarks, Clinton referred to a rally that convention attendees held over the weekend in center city Philadelphia in support of the DREAM Act, or the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minorities Act. Clinton praised four high school students from Arizona featured at the rally. Organizers said the illegal immigrants beat students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a science competition, but can't attend college because of their status. Supporters of the DREAM Act point to such success stories as examples of talented students who would come to a dead-end after high school. ''I want to be sure I get their names,'' Clinton said of the students from Arizona. ''I want to make sure these students go to college.'' Students' illegal status renders them ineligible for financial aid. Labeled international students, they must pay up to three times the tuition of American students, making college financially unfeasible. And even if they earn a degree, they remain illegal immigrants, unauthorized to work. The National Council of La Raza, headquartered in Washington, D.C., was established in 1968 and says its mission is to fight poverty and discrimination and improve life opportunities for Hispanics. In her remarks, Clinton said that while organizations like NCLR are doing their part to promote education among Hispanics, the government is not doing enough to, among other things, bring down high dropout rates and make college affordable. Among other issues, Clinton talked about the high representation of Hispanic children and adults in lead and paint poisoning cases and the high-cost that Hispanic immigrants pay to wire money to their home countries. In the last two cases, she said she has proposed legislation to remedy the problems. Clinton was preceded in her speech by U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings. She praised President Bush's No Child Left Behind initiative for helping bridge the gap in student achievement between Hispanic children and their white counterparts. Spellings said gains among Hispanic children have helped in the overall academic improvement reflected in recently released data. The National Assessment of Education Progress report last week, she said, shows that reading and math scores have improved among 9-year-olds. ''These results did not come out of thin air,'' she said. Puerto Rico Gov. Anibal Acevedo-Vila, who also addressed the convention, focused on the need to develop Hispanic leaders in the United States in the political and corporate arenas. He also had praise for Hispanics, particularly Puerto Ricans, who have served in this country's wars. He shared a story of a mother in Puerto Rico who received news that her son, Ramon, had died in Iraq. He said the mother was sad but did not cry. Instead, he saw in her somber face a look of ''orgullo,'' or pride. ''Thanks to Ramon,'' Acevedo-Vila said, ''we can be proud to say it is our time'' to become leaders in the United States. ''Lo hemos ganado con sangre y sudor.'' (We have earned it with blood and sweat.) The conference, which began Saturday and ends today, also featured sessions on topics such as strategies to incorporate Latino prisoners into society and providing affordable housing to the poor. Today's speakers include Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and his Republican counterpart, Ken Melhman, and U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez. It's the first time the chairmen of both national committees will speak to the NCLR. That's a sign that both parties recognize the importance of the 40 million Hispanics in the country and their potential voting power, according to the group. I have no problem with helping those less fortunate than I am, I have no problem with govermental assitance of those in need. But is it wrong to insist that those who receive aid are here legally? 20. I need some help understanding here. Why is the country trying to figure out how to give drviers licenses, high school diplomas and collge educations to "illegal immigrants"? What part of the word Illegal do I not understand? How does a governmental unit, the DMV give a document to a person who is breaking the law? I know with this diverse group I might get some ideas.
  21. And here I thought the Red and the Black was written by Stendhal and not Hugo

  23. listen to B-P's own words in this recorded speech. You may have to listen to it a few times to understand the words, at the 1:08 mark or so, he makes the comment "their spiritual character is developed by their being brought face to face with the wonders and beauties of nature." If spiritual development wasnt important, why would he have mentioned it in a 3 minute speech explaining Boy Socuts? He talks about charactor development, citizenship and "healthy camp life" (fitness). These are still the aims In his last sentence he mentions God, I think spirituality was B-Ps idea of the characterisitc of a scout Number 4 Address to the Public http://www.chsscout.net/rescenter/video/index.shtml#section4(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  24. Moderators can do that a well, check IP addresses and Juris and Centreville Scout does not have the same IP, nor did Juris share his/her IP address with any of the other "sybils" we have run across. I amnot sure it provres anything as the peson could be using a diferent computer, got a new IP service, etc. BTW when was the last Centreville Scout posting?
