But then again, if you are following the program, then you have a great program by default. Now, I would love to have the scouts attend school in uniforms, but as has been pointed out, perfect is kinda far from here

Just for fun, no one I know has ever asked me a question about St. Jean or Smith and two said it was a shame about those guys who died. I am not sure osawippee (sp?) is on the nation's conscience right now. Ed, how many St Jean and Smith questions have you been asked?

BSA Chicago "Representative Democracy " (NOT)
OldGreyEagle replied to jkhny's topic in Issues & Politics
Hey, you never worry about the Bears or Blackhawks (remember hockey? its played on ice with sticks)Where else can you vote early and often and I think its well known the cemetaries of Chicago provided the margin of victory for JFK, speaking of Chicago cemetaries, what about Resurrection Mary? Now thats Chicago, Mrs O'leary's clumsy cow and a green river every March 17th, as well as a river that flows opposite of its orginal direction. Other than Prairie Scouter, anybody besides jkhny from CAC who can give us another viewpoint? -
"You belong to your council..." And here I thought Lincoln freed the slaves and I guess it is MY troop after all... or rather I am THEIR committee member (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

The Federal Government and Katrina: Incompetent?
OldGreyEagle replied to Kahuna's topic in Issues & Politics
Just to add a bit to Hunt's excellent post. A plan to evacuate the old, the infirm, and non-mobile has to be considered. Not everyone has a car and the resources to take off and leave the area. Not everyone has cable and gets the weather channel (Horrors) And sadly, there also has to be public confidence that if they leave, there will be security so that possessions left behind will be there on return. Many lessons learned, and we are just getting started. -
I am a life long Chicago Bear fan and all that it implies. I have been known to not always be scoutlike to those natives in a state to the north of Illinois. The term "cheesehead" may have escaped from my lips a time or two. I may have proclaimed the superiority of the Bears over rivals (ok, I live in lala land) at times and have had rivals proclaim (sometimes with evidence) superiority over my Bears. Now, do I think Packer fans "denigrate" Bear fans? No, I just think they are misguided. At various times you will hear sports announcers say something like "people in Baltimore sure know their football" or people in Detroit sure know their hockey" (remember hockey? its played on ice with sticks). Does this denigrate all residents of all communities elsewhere? No, I don't think so. I don't see Notre Dame fans as denigrating Pitt fans when they say we are better than you. I see it as people with the same belief (Raiders Rule MAN!)as supporting each other. They may "trash talk" Patriot fans and the Pats Backers trash talk right back and I would have a hard time understanding how any one is denigrated. The Chicago Bears fan club takes a dim view of Viking fans, but I am not sure they "denigrate" them(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Gimme the Light of the Campfire
OldGreyEagle replied to Campfire Fairy's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Adam was the first man, and he lived all alone, Til Eve was manufactured out of Adam's collar bone; They went into the garden to pick a bowl of fruit, And all that they got was the order of the boot. Adam was the first man that ever was invented Along came Eve and then he was contented Then came the Serpent, knocking at the door Eve et the apple and Adam et the core Adam was the first man, we all do believe He had a wife and her name was Eve She was fair to look upon, and oh how she could dance And her dress was made of shredded wheat, and so were Adam's pants Adam was a quiet very easy-going man He didn't chew tobacco and he didn't rush the can But he stole a watermelon which he hadn't orter done He heard the cop a-comin' and you should have seen him run Adam was the first man, and Eve was the other. Cain was a wicked man, 'cause he killed his brother. Old Mother Eve couldn't sleep without her piller And the strongest man that ever lived was Jack the Giant Killer. -

The devil was an angel before he went astray. He spent all night in a New York cabaret. He couldn't find his key, so he rang Saint Peter's bell. Saint Peter stuck his head out and he said to go to away -

Gimme the Light of the Campfire

The world was made in six days and finished on the seventh According to the contract it should have been the eleventh But the union called a strike and the workers wouldn't work So the only thing that they could do was fill it up with dirt When they finished with the firmament they started on the sky They hung it overhead and they left it there to dry They studded it with stars made of pretty angel's eyes To give us a little light when the moon forgot to rise -
Scout spirit and participation for eagles
OldGreyEagle replied to pmickle1027's topic in Advancement Resources
pmickle1027, I have given the citation from the appropriate BSA publication. If you need clatification send me a PM. I hope you found the information you were looking for. Some people have shown that no matter the facts, they can't admit reality and thats all I have to say on the matter. -
Scout spirit and participation for eagles
OldGreyEagle replied to pmickle1027's topic in Advancement Resources
Let me try this again, The scout in mention has been at Life for 4 years. During that time was there a 6 month period of time when he was active in his patrol and troop and did he do his positon of responsibility to the Troops satisfaction? Then I would want to know if he has any "3-month" merit badges such as Family Life, Personel Management, or Pesonel Fitness to earn, because unless he can show he started them, they cant be done. But, I will take it all the merit badges are done, maybe a couple elective to do but they could be handled and all is left is the Eagle Project. I would review the steps with him and let him try. Now, as far the definition of Scout Spirit is, its actually rather simple. Some want Scout Spirit to be about what the scout has done for the troop above and beyond the published 6 month requirement, and that can't happen. From the BSA Publication Advancement Committee, Policies and Procedures we find the statement "Scout spirit is defined as living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in a Scout's everyday life." And some people say BSA doesnt do a good job of defining Scout Spirit, I think BSA does, some just dont like it. Note, there is no mention of Troop meeting attendance, only the 6 month requirement to be active in Troop and Patrol. Now, his abscence in the troop means you have to call parents, teachers, EMT people and assess how he has lived. But if he has lived the Scout Oath and Law, give him a chance. -
Venturers at Woodbadge
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
See, again I am confused, I thought having the Venturers on the 4th day do a run though of a Leave No Trace Campsite and assist in the problem solving activities was part of the curriculam and no one could alter the curriculum and it makes me wonder of something like WOod badge can be fooled around with, what about other training? How certain can anyone be about what is offered in a class in another State or COuncil if this is changed? BTW, my son was on staff at the WoodBadge course I took as a Venturer Youth. Got out of High school and got service hours. The best part is whenever the WoodBadge song is sung, he gets to join in the "used to be a staffer" stanza, really shakes some people up -
Once again I am confused. With the passing of William Rehnquist I heard some things by which I am confused. When Rehnquist was placed on the Court, it appears he was one of very few conservatives and over the years the Supreme Court is being described as getting more and more Conservative yet it seems to me that I hear alot about the country being led to ruin by the activist liberal judges so I have to ask, How can the Supreme Court be described as Conservative and the rest of the judicial system be described as Liberal, is that a disconnect? WHat am I missing?

Does he have his six months of POR done? -
If I get off track here, let me know, as I am sure you will but I always feel better if I ask. Way, way, way back in my college days, (after Brownsea Island but before the end of the delicious red berets)I had a Management Major in College. One of the classes I took was in Industrial Engineering, known as the "Hawthrone Experiments". These were done somewhere around Chicago as a Western Bell plant. The initial idea as to determine the ideal lighting in the plant to maximize effeciency. The engineers noticed as they increased light, production rose, so the thought was the brighter the factory, the more productivity, then, to prove the theory, they started dimming the lights, they went dimmer than the lights had been before the experiment started, and productivity still rose. They went until objects were barely visible before productivity slowed. What did the results mean? What I remember is that the employees knew they were being studied and were thrilled to be involved in improving their work places and they put out effort. Even to the point where conditions were deteriorating, efficiency still rose because humans do better when they are involved. Fast forward to the recent pass. The Edward Deming style of Quality Management says that organizations do its best work when EVERYONE is in on the policy decisions. No, its not required, but how many readers are employed by company's that do "grass root" surveys every year or on some regular basis. Its not bad to hear what the underlings think. Old Sam Walton came up with a lot of ideas by traveling cross country with his truck drivers and he did all right. This may come off as a rant, but I feel better

BSA Chicago "Representative Democracy " (NOT)
OldGreyEagle replied to jkhny's topic in Issues & Politics
jkhny, thank you for asking concise questions. I have my thoughts. Next, I asked for opinions on if this thread should stay open or closed. I get PM's asking why the moderators allow "stuff like this" to keep being posted and then when I raise the subject, the closest thing I get to a close it vote is a comment why start here? I dont know, I guess if you are going to Hades in a handbasket, it makes no sense to change direction, just keep going. now, "What do you do when it is clear things are NOT working?" Whenever I think its clear things aren't working, I ask others if they see the same things I think I do. And I sk a lot, and I dont ask people who I like and think like me. I ask the opinion of people I normally like to stir clear of, just to be sure I have a grip on reality. What do volunteers do when they have followed all the rules and regulations and are STILL ignored? I guess you have to go to the annual meeting and voice concerns, it would help if you got the CORs involved as they are the ones who actually control things. If you say the CORs are non-responsive, then you have to work to get them more on the ball. Is this appropriate ANYWHERE? I am not sure what this means, but IF its bas as you say, no its not appropriate, but then again I dont know what the opposition viewpoint is. Could you invite a Supported of the Chicago Council to become a member and let us ask them quesitions. What should the volunteers in Chicago do? I mentioned it before, first organize and get your COR's to see the issues you see. Its the CORs who wield the power. Next, contact the Executive Board members who may be middle of the road and those who dont see it the COuncil way. What can they do? I dont know myself, but as you have experienced the lone wolf in the desert doesnt efect much change, but a group working from within does wonders (See the Illiad) -
The Crew I serve's Advisor and his son, also a Crew member, have been in New Orleans since monday, they are both certified swift water rescuers. His wife says they will be back sunday or monday. They have been picking people off roofs

Anybody got a case of Ice cold Moxie?

A few things to ask a prospective DE 1. How much do you know about the program? In your case it may be obvious, but thats not always the case 2. How much "volunteer" training have you had? Again, it may not be a problem in this case, but it could be a factor with other candidates. If the candidate hasn't taken the volunteer training, such as Committee Challenge, etc, put it on his goal sheet for the first year. I am not expecting them to do those jobs, but have an understanding of what the volunteer position does 3. What role does the DE play in the District 4. What role does the Chair play in the District 5. What role does the District Commissioner play in the District Ask those 5 and see how they jive with your thoughts
