The troop I serve has approx 70 scouts. We don't have mandatory fund raisers and we don't have 18 thou in the bank. Then again, we don't do troop tents, scouts furnish their own, a tradition started long ago. We don't have a lot of "troop" equipment, some stoves, chuck boxes and pots/pans. I guess it pales against other troops inventory but we have limited storage space and have decidned against the trailer(s) route. When the Troops focus is on money and "stuff", where do the boys fit in?

At what point does a non profit organization start to become in danger of losing not for profit status? If you have 18 thou in the bank, why do they need more? I do agree that everyone should participate in fund raising, but I also think the funds raised by a "generation" of boys needs to be spent on those boys. Building a nest eggs serves what purpose?

The way I understood it, Edison was looking for the perfect material to be the light source. He tried Human Hair, Horse Hair, Goat Hair, Copper, Steel, Grass and about a thousand other materials. His wife told him that what he was looking for was a filament of his imagination. BTW, how can you tell when a Martian has been in your house? All your light bulbs are gone and there are piles of little green crystals in front of every lamp...

Something keeps bothering me, and it may just be trivial, and I am not sure if this makes a difference. But the time span of three months has been used in this thread. If the bullying has been going on, it means it started 7-11-05. give or take a few days. This means school has been in session all summer? Now it may have been, I just want to verify. The reason I ask is because bullying is often in the eyes of the victim, perhaps it has been going on since school started and it seems like three months. Maybe it started late last year and the youth have carried over last school year to this year or maybe some hyperbole has worked into the claims. It may have felt like three months and its been weeks. Now, I am as adamant about bullying as anyone, but if in October I was told my son has been a bully at school for the past three months, I may just laugh in your face. Be very sure of your facts, and if they are guilty, they deserve more that 7 days detention

Wood Badge Course Changes
OldGreyEagle replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I have to say that the way Wood Badge was handled pre 21rstWB would have done any Good Ol' Boy network proud. Virtually never talked about except in in terms of what was done for the ticket and that you had to be invited to attend the next course and that it was only for "true scouters". So, if you werent invited, then you knew you werent a real scouter. With the 21rst Wood Badge, that attitude seemed to have changed. Yes, you still are invited, but you request an invitation and all qualified are taken. There is some grumbling about how the course has changed, but those who grumble pretty much still camp in canvas tents with two wool blankets wrapped around them fastened by those huge safety pins. And then complain how cold it was last night. I have to ask, who was it that decided these issues? Was anyone amoung us asked to participate in the process? I know we have COurse directors here and others with plenty of bead experience, who decides who is going to decide what we all must do? If there was animosity before, is this the way to allay it? -
Wood Badge Course Changes
OldGreyEagle replied to dancinfox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I can understand having staff who havent taken the 21rst Wood Badge take the sessions as students to understand how the course components relate to each other. But I am not sure what doing an additional ticket accomplishes. -
What do you do with parents who complain all these "new" clothes are too expensive and cant be borne by the family budget?
-
Haven't we talked about Council Fundraisers that were centered around wine tasting parties? No youth were present during the event and it appears no youth are "present" here either. Whats the difference?
-
"We are continually being told from the district & council level that the uniform will be gone in 5 years!" WOW! Where do you live? I hadnt heard that before, anybody else?

Why do LDS Scouts get lost/killed more often?

I can tell most of you are getting a real charge out of this topic. And I have to say to myself, watts the harm? All it takes is a little provocation and everybody who fancies themselves a live wire gets amped up! Oh well, keep it light and maybe I wont have to make this thread go lights out Pardon me, I have other threads of which I must keep abreast

The requirement reads, While a First Class Scout, take part in service projects totaling at least six hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster. Meritbadge.com offers this explanation: For Star and Life ranks, a Scout must perform six hours of service to others. This may be done as an individual project or as a member of a patrol or troop project. Star and Life service projects may be approved for Scouts assisting on Eagle service projects. The Scoutmaster approves the project before it is started. (note this in only one explanation, its not the final word). The key is getting the scoutmaster's approval. Now, if he was unpaid at the Summer Day Camp, that could have been approved, had the scout approached the Scoutmaster first. I also have to say, most scoutmaster's I know would have taken the Day Camp work, even without prior approval. But, the Scoutmaster is within his rights to say he has to approve it first. If he says it has to be done at a scout reservation , that sounds like an odd request, how far away is the nearest scout reservation? My spider sense is telling me that there is more to this story.

Just to be be sure, You arent talking about having a Star scout organize and lead a project, are you ?

Remind me again, what is the boys role in this fundraiser?

I am not quite sure what to do with this thread, I have no problem making light of forum behavior,

Under whose "name" is the booth manned?
-
So anybody looking for you could be termed on a snipe hunt?
-
Would it be wrong to ask your "name"?

I don't think you couldnt eat french cuisine, you just showed your patriotism if you termed them Freedom fries and Freedom toast... I got a couple of French Military rifles, vintage WWII at a local gun show, they were billed as being in nearly new condition, never fired, dropped only once

Sorry I was being obtuse, that was my failing. I was just interested if the troops have relaxed uniform "standards" based on the cost of the items. It seems there is often a disconnect between the uniform being too expensive because troops have "economically disadvantaged" membes but the standards of equipment seems on the higher end of the scale. Just a thought,
