  1. Stosh I was reading your post and I had an almost epiphany, I think you can very much compare respect for the flag code to that of peoples attitudes towards the BSA uniform. There are plenty of resources on both yet people very much have no problem adopting a cavalier attitude mostly based on what has been done in the past or based on it really doesnt matter. When its not important to do it right, it won't be
  2. @SR540 Pierre is a blithe ephemeral spirit. He was present at the Cremation of Sam MaGee, a story he recounts often; had tea with Madame Marie Curie nee Sklodowska; Cigars with William Shakespeare and gave him some advice and conversed with William Henry Drummond who wrote the poem "The Voyageur". It is said by some, well Pierre and I, that the subject of this poem is Pierre himself Pierre's father ended up in New Orleans after the whole Acadia fiasco and revolutionized the food service industry, you may recognize his name, Cafe DuMonde. Pierre is no stranger to hardship, he will get along. Now, If only I could meet him as we are never in the same spot together
  3. From what I have read, you can render whale blubber down to oil, I read a book about that, called Moby Dick... Call me Ishmael
  4. One could say cleaning such a catch would be "One Whale" of a job...
  5. Drinking alcohol is not in of itself illegal, but it can be used in the commision of a crime, does not make drinking alchol bad. A car can be used to assault a human, doesnt mean we should stop using them I could go on, but have already shown an emotional connection to the subject so I can't discuss it much either. Hunting, when legal, I want to do and have other people enjoy. Just because some people corrupt things does not make the things bad, it just makes it a tool in the hands of a corrupt person
  6. pack, I read your post and immediately thought of a couplet from the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 'The game is done! I've won! I've won!' When arguments are based on the size of the opponents genitalia, the game is pretty much over...
  7. May I assume you pointed out that you would not be shooting rifles at each other... I may not have understood the difference either as a youth, I do now, not sure I agree, but I understand
  8. Seeing as how a Venturing Crew may be registered as a Sports Crew, I think the BSA is ok with Crews in organized competition and there is the Varsity Program which again is sports and competition oriented As I understand it, the thought of National in allowing hunting is to teach young adults responsible firearm handling and firearm ethics. Note that to complete the elective you don't HAVE to kill anything, although you do need to plan and carry out a hunt These are the requirements for the Hunting Elective in the Outdoor area of Venturing 1. a.Successfully complete a hunter education course offered by your state wildlife/conservation agency. b.Learn and explain the requirements to become a volunteer hunter education instructor in your state. c.Explain how to report a wildlife-related violation to the appropriate law enforcement agency. 2.Do 2(a), (b), or ©.a.Successfully complete a bowhunter education course offered by your state or the National Bowhunter Education Foundation. b.Successfully complete a National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Rifle Basic course. c.Participate in a National Rifle Association-International Hunter Education Association Youth Hunter Education Challenge event sponsored by your state. 3.Do 3(a), (b), or ©.a.Assist a certified hunter education instructor with a hunter education course. Review the ERHIC (Educational Tools for Hunters: Improving Choices) materials provided by Tread Lightly! and the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America to see how they can be used in the course. b.Either plan or assist in putting on a National Hunting and Fishing Day program. c.Talk with a game warden/conservation officer about his/her job. If possible, observe/assist at a game check station in your state. 4.Plan and carry out a hunting trip approved by an Advisor. 5.Make a tabletop display or presentation on what you have learned for your crew, another crew, a Cub or Boy Scout group, or another youth group.
  9. I will be on Staff in the Buckskin Games, well, rather my good friend Pierre DuMonde will be on Staff and I will be driving him. Pierre is a 18th Century Voyageur and has trouble getting a drivers license since there are no records of his birth. So, look for Pierre in the Buckskin games area, he should be easy to recognize since he will be wearing his signature red tuque and red sash
  10. I know what the BSA says is normally scoffed at, but this is what the Guide to SAfe Scouting says about Co-Ed activities: Aropriate adult leadership must be present for all overnight Scouting activities; coed overnight activitieseven those including parent and childrequire male and female adult leaders, both of whom must be 21 years of age or older, and one of whom must be a registered member of the BSA. The chartered organization is responsible for ensuring that sufficient leadership is provided for all activities. Now, as it says "Male and Female leaders, BOTH of whom" I and the rest of the Council I serve have taken this to mean one adult of both sexes. Chartering organizaitons of the units themselves may wish to add to the requirements, and this is one area where they certainly may add. In the situtation described, this did not happen as their wa no second leader, since it was Co-ed the second leader would have had to be a female over 21
  11. Irsap, Central Florida Council? Have you met Bob the Bear a yet?
  12. A hearty welcome to you NACAP, as you can tell the members here wll tell you exactly as they feel and if you can address some of their concerns, you will be doing well Welcome and Good Luck
  13. MIB, when you say the troop "banned" who was it? The Adults, the PLC or the youth themselves? Just asking next, for Irsap, the ironic part is both of you walked away from the week end shaking your collective heads over the other troops operation. Now, just between you and me, you are doing things the right way so stay the course. The other guy, known now as OG, probably is talking about meeting your unit now. OG is saying thigs like, they were so disorganized because their Scoutmaster didn't do XXX, (you fill in the XXX) the fact that the scoutmaster is not taxed to do XXX will never enter his cognitive process. Sounds like the kind of unit I would like to be a part of, where are you again? I am looking for a unit, I left the one I had been associated with, they wouldn't know boy lead patrol method if it bit them in the buttt
  14. If you have a dog next door that can get to you before you get to the house, you are way to in town to be discharging a firearm. SHooting the dog is out, then again a small baseball bat or billy club to the skull could be effective, in self-defense mode of course Then what follows would be the Taxidermy merit badge, if you kill it, you mount it...
  15. ANother alternative is that he felt like excercising his Constitutional right to Bear Arms, you don't "Need" a reaosn to carry a gun, just being an American gives you right to carry one Of course, if you do stupid things with it, well then, thats the horse of a differnt color you hear so much about
  16. So, spun off from the thread on Extreme Distance Shooting. Hunting is an activity that Venturers may do. Hunting is an elective for the Ranger Award. From time to time there is talk of a Hunting merit badge. What are the thoughts on the Ethics of Hunting
  17. The only thing I have to say is that Welding is not just for boys, you don't remember Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance"? Loved the water splash on the chair...
  18. But le Voyageur said in the original post that the reason for the extreme long range was to teach Venturers "...basics of hunting at extreme ranges" Hunting is allowed in the Venturing Program And as is the case with most of the BSA, you may either embrace the program or run screaming from it,
  19. drmBear, I think Joe Cocker said it best "... You are so beautiful... to me..." And that is never false
  20. I don't know about Eamonn's parents but I can speak about mine I do think my mother would explain why I had to do what they said. To learn discipline, to learn responsibility. I remember her saying as she spanked me, this hurts me more than it hurts you and being impressed she could inflict that level of pain on herself I do think my father demonstrated how to work to provide for his family. To go to work in the Heat, COld, Rain and Snow (He was a linemen for COmmonwealth Edison) He demonstrated how to be a Scout Leader he got the St George's Cross as a scouter for his work so you guys can blame him for my Scouting zeal, he first demonstrated it Both parents Guided me through life, as I got alder and had to make my own decisions they would ask questions about outcomes and let me know what they would do but repected my choice if did something else And finally, yeah they enabled me, they said hey kid, your married you aint living here no more... Actually they never said that, they had gotten me to the place where I knew I was to live life on my own with my wife and if that is not being enabled, no one is
  21. What if you asked the PLC to develop such a list and then had them follow it and part of the PLC agenda, a standing item, would be a discussion of the Units level of preparation for all events since the last PLC with changes in the Check list as a result of the evaluation. It could lead to the youth owning the preparation process and understanding why things are done when they are because they helped develop the system.
  22. I am going to ask something that may seem to be off topic, but I really think it is related and that is, Does anybody know how many kids 17 and under have been fatally shot since Trayon Martin died and what is being done to stop it? Now, I don't know how many have died but I am guessing some. Where is the outrage for these dead children? DO they all not derserve it? Any preventable death (and yes, this was preventable) is abhorrent but to try someone in the press or on the Forum seems unscoutlike. Zimmerman's guilt or lack thereof will be ascertained by the system. We need to work on a Society where such things could not happen
  23. So, there used to be this Cable TV CHannel, Versus, mostly known for showing Hockey games but they had a significant amount of Hunting and Fishing programs as well. Well, on January 1 2012 Versus became the NBC SPorts Channel and while some Fishing TV shows are still on, the Hunting ones have really dwindled down. I told you all that for this, I was watching Versus for awhile and their Hunting shows and many many times the host, The guy doing the hunting, would pass up a good looking animal because he said it was just to young and while it was a fine buck, a few more years and he would be an outstanding trophy. Now, me, I would have shot the animal but after hearing similar comments about making good decisions in the field and how Texas has been able to manage its Deer Herd to produce bigger and bigger deer maybe there is something to it. I dont know. I know if I spent thousands on a once in a lifetime hunt and had a beautiful 3 year old moose lined up for a shot and the guide said, naw, he is to young you should get an older one but couldnt guarantee that I would get an older one, I just don't know what I would do. Somehow I think this is a much deeper issue than whether or not you can wear jeans with a Class A short or having a New Scout Patrol versus mixed ages Patrol
  24. Ahh, but Eamonn you did have knowledge of being a parent and you did have a demonstration from experts... Your Parents and that could either be a Blessing or a Curse
  25. Many times over the past years we have heard a call from many of us to have BSA honor the "Local Option", the ability of the Chartering Organization to decide who it wants to be the leader of the units they Charter. These leaders would be chosen by the Chartering Organization's standards, not the BSA's. So, here we have the BSA saying to Chartering Organizations that AHG is an organization that may be worth looking at and that is not good? Its an option, one that is not a fit for all, but would not a local option of Leadership qualifications also not be a good fit for all?
