Too busy to take training
OldGreyEagle replied to CNYScouter's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
How about if we take a step back and think about this. What about on-line training? We have youth protection on-line, why not some of the others? On-line or self-study courses would fit into "busy" schedules much easier, wouldnt it? -
Eagle Question for the Advancement Gurus
OldGreyEagle replied to Eagle74's topic in Advancement Resources
In the Council I serve, the completed Eagle application and Eagle project workbook needs to be signed and submitted to the Council Office by the scouts 18th birthday. Or the last day poosible is when the scout is 17 years and 364 days old. -
"The federal budget has huge structural problems." Amen brother and not the least of which is going to be social security. It outrages me beyonf belief that the Dems stood and gave themselves a standing ovation at the State of the Union Address because they had thwarted the Administrations plan for Social Security. I am not say that the Administrations plan was the best answer, but for the Dems to kill it, brag about it and then not address it is beyond belief. What do we tell scouts who are Life and lagging on Advancement? DO something because the clock is ticking? WHat has any recent administration done for Social Security ? the pig in the python hits in 10 years!

Should Venturing drop the Boy Scout ranks to Eagle
OldGreyEagle replied to dana_renner's topic in Venturing Program
Hi Dana, long time no see Anyway, I do not think those in a Venture Crew should be able to earn any Boy Scout rank from the Crew. If they want to be dual registered, fine, let them earn Boy Scout ranks in Boy Scouts and Venturing recognitions in Venturing. Venturing has enough of an identity problem trying to differentiate itself from a Venture Patrol and a Boy Scout Troop and having Venturers also earning Boy Scout ranks merely adds to the chaos. Then there is the issue that we say Venturing Crews are youth lead, there is no Venturemaster as there is a Cubmaster and a Scoutmaster, only a Venture Crew Advisor. We tell out youth that its to be demoratically run, that all are equal and then we say by the way, the boys can earn up to Eagle as a Venturer, but you girls, well since you can't ever be fitst class Boy Scouts, you can't earn Eagle. The girls can earn Bronzes, Golds, Silvers, etc. participate in all aspects of Venturing, but they can't earn Eagle. Why even allow the males to do so. If the Venturing model cant exist without Boy Scouts Eagle, its time to rethink the concept. Then again, thats my opinion I could be wrong (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Actually I would have thought the homoerotic lyrics of YMCA would have drawn more ire...

Ok, so the music selection for the parade of nations was at least "suspect", disco tunes and 80's American pop? I can only think the organizers were out to embarass the US, though I just may be paronoid BTW, I was hoping the USA team would come out to the strains of the Boss's "Born in the USA"

what does "6 months active in Troop" mean?
OldGreyEagle replied to hellomom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
SR540Beaver The original post says: "...His Scoutmaster is considering whether or not to sign off on the "active in troop" requirement for Eagle until he goes on at least 3 campouts in a 6 month period and attends troop meetings..." No mention was made about showing leadership, the scoutmaster just wants him to be "active", if it was a POR issue, that would be given as the reason. If the scout would have gotten his Eagle done after one of the ASPL terms and then left the troop, would he be a better role model to the younger scouts than having them see a boy scout be in theatre and be an all state chorus member? Being able to say, "hey I am in the same troop as hellomom's son and he is an Eagle scout" would be a huge ego boost to the younger guys -
what does "6 months active in Troop" mean?
OldGreyEagle replied to hellomom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The requirement is to be active for 6 months, not 18, if the requirement was 18 months maybe there would be an issue. The scout has served 2 terms as ASPL, and would have had to be active to successfully have completed the terms. -
Anybody wanna get in the pool on what Bode Miiler's alcohol blood level will be when he marches in the stadium?

One should keep in mind in 1990, Colorado beat Missouri by a touchdown scored on a fifth down and declined to consider forfeiting the game. Who is more admirable, people who can accept defeat, or those who cling to a tainted victory?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Why give up on schools that are targeted by other troops. Soem might like yours better than the other

So Many Scouts, So Few Offices ...
OldGreyEagle replied to Sir_Scoutalot's topic in The Patrol Method
How many instructors do you have? Why not have one for knots, one for fire building, one for cooking etc. How Many Quartermasters do you have? Why not one grubmaster for all things food and food preparation, another for all tents and another for all troop equipments,(lanterns, dining flies, etc) the above supposes you have a large troop and each of these is a "full time" job Then again, there is the afore mentioned scoutmaster assigned leadership project -
Ah, SR540Beaver, I think I understand what you mean. I have ocasion to travel some in my job. And just about every "major" city I visit I can find a "sports Talk" radio station. Regardless of geographical location, the basic format is the same, the radio host makes comments and listeners call in to give their views. Generally, the hosts comments are negative towards the city's sports teams and the callers call-in to rant and rave and call the players chokes and no-talented bums while labeling the ownership moronic idiots who need help finding their way to the rest room let alone home. As I soaked in the phenomona, I thought, what a great deal, the station targets the die hard fan who isnt happy unless his team consistently doesnt just win, but destroys the competition for 10 years in a row, and in the 11th will complain how lousy the bums are and how they were lucky for the past ten years and they will never be any good again. THis format will work for all NFL cities right now except for Pittsburgh, but I am sure the sports radio in Pittsburgh is centered on who is a free agent and if they lose so and so they cant ever expect to repeat. It feeds on negativism and is apparently quite successful. So, maybe political talk shows are the same, they pander to a specific view point and hammer away at the things that demographic wants to hear in the name of freedom in speech financed by the ad revenue generated by the loyal listeners. The "news" cable stations are deplorable. Let's say there is a topic of real interest. Say how the Federal Government responded to Katrina. One guy says we did all we could as fast as we could, the other guy says the feds sat on their hands while people died. Then they start to talk. Its quite interesting, both sides tell their story and its really good. Just as I am really getting into it, the host says sorry guys we are up against a break and bids adieu to the pair and they cut to commercial and then the host introduces the next segment, the two dogs considered to be the canines to beat in the upcomming Westminister Dog Show. It drives me nuts, how can they abruptly cut off a rolling discussion? Do they think thats what we/I want? To get a kernel of the story before the participants are cut off? Has the ability to compromise been lost in our society?

I am going to try something here, if it doesnt work, I will be apologizing for quite awhile. When I first read the title of the thread, Evangelical Leaders Join Global Warming Initiative, I thought, WOW, how did all those guys ever agree on anything. I read the title, "Evangelical Leaders" to include all who lay claim to the title. I guess it would be similar to "Pittsburgh Steelers Win Superbowl". Each Steeler is regarded to having won the Superbowl. But not every Evangelical Leader is joining the Global Warming Initiative; 86 are. But the title of the thread is not false, as there are Evangelical Leaders who are joining the Global Warming Initiative. When it is said Liberals think XXX or Conservatives think ZZZ, do we mean all, every last one of the stinkin' ilk, or do we mean some? Are we so prescient that we "know" how others think, and truly every last one of them? I have seen references to neoconservatives and paleoconservatives, I don't think both of these groups think alike or there wouldnt be a need for these labels. Then on the Liberal side, there are factions as well. So, how do we truly know what the other side thinks? Maybe we should ask, listen, digest and discuss instead of outright dismissal

Too busy to take training

Scouters talk alot about "Delivering the Promise", it's tough to deliver the promise if you don't take the time to find out what it is. -
Just let me hear some of that Rock And Roll Music, Any old way you choose it; It's got a back beat, you can't lose it, Any old time you use it. It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music, If you want to dance with me, If you want to dance with me. I've got no kick against modern jazz, Unless they try to play it too darn fast; And change the beauty of the melody, Until they sounded like a symphony, That's why I go for that Rock And Roll Music ... Any old way you choose it; It's got a back beat, you can't lose it, Any old time you use it. It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music, If you want to dance with me, If you want to dance with me. Way down South they gave a jubilee, The jokey folks they had a jamboree; They're drinkin' homebrew from a water cup, The folks dancin' got all shook up And started playin' that Rock And Roll Music ... Any old way you choose it; It's got a back beat, you can't lose it, Any old time you use it. It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music, If you want to dance with me, If you want to dance with me. I took my loved one over 'cross the tracks So she can hear man avail a sax I must admit they had a rockin' band Man, they were goin' like a hurricane That's why I go for that Rock And Roll Music ... Any old way you choose it; It's got a back beat, you can't lose it, Any old time you use it. It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music, If you want to dance with me, If you want to dance with me. Don't care to hear 'em play a tango, I'm in the mood to dig a mambo; It's way to early for a congo, So keep a rockin' that piano So I can hear some of that Rock And Roll Music ... Any old way you choose it; It's got a back beat, you can't lose it, Any old time you use it. It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music, If you want to dance with me, If you want to dance with me

Not showing the twin towers falling?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Issues & Politics
There are people alive today who were at Pearl Harbor, there are survivors of the concentratoin camps in Nazi Germany alive today, take the Skoie Swift in the summer to see the prisoner tattoes. The Jews use the phrase "we will never forget" we should use it as well when talking about the twin towers, yes it jangles the nerves, but we must never forget. -
I love this place, I find out so much new stuff. The showing of the twin towers comming down controversy mentioned in another thread is new to me. Who is advocating it and where can I find it? Is this an urban legend? I can't tell how many times I have seen footage of Pearl Harbor and no one seems offended though thosaunds died that day. I have seen footage of Nazi concentration camps and no one seems to want to block those images. Men comming ashore on D-Day and that guy falling over. Where is this comming from?

Eagle76, I am not a trained Wood Badge Ticket Counselor, but I can't fathom any thing you would do to benefit your troop that couldnt be at the very least a part of a ticket item if not the ticket item itself Wood badge is done to strengthen your value in your scouting position, not undermine it. Leastwiese thats what I was taught

Selecting the SPL is easy, have the boys vote for who they want, its part of the program. Next if you have a doubt about who the troop is sending to JLT, then you may want to revisit your selection process. Has the boy asked to go? When told he might be going, what was his reaction? How has he handled leadership roles in the past? Were there two likely canidates and one was selected? What if the Troop sent both, paying half of the fee and the boys responsible for the other half, the troop spends the same money and has 2 trained youth. How much is it anyway?
-
we talk alot about advancement on this forum and how its really the scout's responsibility. The troop needs to have activities scheduled so the boy can make first class in a year, but then its up to the boy to show up, show his stuff and get it recorded. I am not sure what the exact issue is. He needs to meet the requirements, if they are met, he moves on. We adults are so contradictory, we try to figure out how to motivate "lunkhead" 17 year olds to finish Eagle and then the next day try to figure out how to slow down a freight train, what is it we want anyhow? For advancement to meet our expectations or the boys?
