First class in first year - or not
OldGreyEagle replied to Scoutfish's topic in Advancement Resources
Venividi, you said "...which is what OGE is addressing when he states that skills should be included in the program outside of the need for advancement requirements. I found that this culture is difficult to change." And if this is a hijack, let me know. But what else would be in a troops program but Scout Skills? And the opportunity to use, hone, master them? Why else does a troop exist except as an opportunity to use the skills you have learned? And thank you qwazse, First CLass in a year can be done if the scout is willing and the troop has to be willing to give the scout the chance, look at what I have said in this thread: "if a scout was so inclined they could earn First Class in a year. IF and that is a big IF, the scout is so inclined, he could earn First CLass in a year." "All a troop can do is offer the program, it's up to the scout to avail himself of the program and learn the skills." "Please note, I did not say indicate nor assume mastery of any of these topics from a single exposure, The topics are taught/presented and the scouts use them. Its up to the scout to seek out whoever is the designated signer off when he thinks he can do the requirements to the level the unit sees fit. Note I did not say merely being there means the requirement is signed off" I do not think anything I posted said the troop needs to rush kids through, the advancment steps must be folowed or it hurts the guys who actually take the time to learn the stuff. If the scout is willing, the troop should be as well, but again, the scout has to be willing AND have the skills -

I beleive First Class First year is a good goal -
A few years back, well, more than a few actually, a patrol in the troop wanted to use the name "Bushies" with the Pine Tree patrol patch. The adults did a strange thing. We said, fine, you are the Bushies. The kids hated it, they never thought we would let them keep it Troop tradition is to change patrols once a year. The guys can change which patrol they are in or stay together, and they can change the name or keep the one they have. FOr a few years we had the "Sons of Liberty" patrol, mostly because the High School they went to is known as Liberty High School

Ah, as good friend Ed would say, When you assume... Anyway, to get to first class a scout has to whip and fuse rope, well fuse a synthetic rope and whip a real one Raise and lower and fold an American Flag Use a Map and Compass LEarn about Leave no Trace Select a Campsite Learn First Aid for specific situations Learn to tell directions at night Idenitify Plants and some other things, like the knots, all of the above could easily be worked into an anuual plan for the troop. The skills are presented and those who know the skills help the guys who don't. After the skills learning part is done, then there is patrol competiton centering on the skills learned and maybe a few that were not just covered. That way it has something for everyone. The PLC sets the meeting agenda, including those topics are not just because its for advancment, its because they are scouting skills that need to be reviewed and in helping those who dont them, the guys who know them help reinifirce them. Now, if the PLC does not want to do that, its up to them. They have 12 months to plan meetings, events and acitivities. How they spend that time is their repsonsibility, I dont think its a burden to review these activities once a year but that my thinking, theirs could be different. But I do not think presenting them in a year is rushing things. The scout has to know the requirements, not just do it once. If a scout misses something, then its up to the scout, not the troop to learn the skill. I dont see it as that big a challenge, but there are many colors in the crayon box Please note, I did not say indicate nor assume mastery of any of these topics from a single exposure, The topics are taught/presented and the scouts use them. Its up to the scout to seek out whoever is the designated signer off when he thinks he can do the requirements to the level the unit sees fit. The Charter president of the Crew won a significant bet with one of her teachers, she said she was a Boy Scout and the teacher said that was impossible. Some wager was arrived at and she produced her Membership card and was declared the winner. No teacher has since disputed girls can be Boy Scouts, well, actually you and I know that girls can be members of the BSA, just not as Boy Scouts but I guess the teacher was not that semantically adept

Who said anything about having the Troop guide do it? Did I say anything about using the New Scout Patrol in any of my postings? Its tough to carry on a conversation when I don't know where the resonses are comming from, here, I'll help First Class First year? Terrible idea, never happen, -

I get so confused, I see Beavah using a quote form me and then I read his post and not sure how what he says relates to what I posted. A troop "could" set up stoves and have scouts practice cooking and cleaning during troop meetings and even "GASP" duing Patrol meetings outside of Troop meetins, it could happen. Cooking is not a skill that can only be done and learned on Campouts, All a troop can do is offer the program, it's up to the scout to avail himself of the program and learn the skills. -
AHG: A Thread for Discussing the Program
OldGreyEagle replied to MomWhoCamps's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I know this has been talked about obliquely and I do not remember seening a specific answer, although there may have been one, but a straight questions: Can a legal resident of the United States who is an alien be a leader in the AHG? With all the rhetoric and obsfuscation, I thought I would go the easy route -
First class in first year - or not
OldGreyEagle replied to Scoutfish's topic in Advancement Resources
Advancement is at the Scouts pace, some may want to be Eagle, others may just like the fellowship and others may be there because mom and dad say so. Each scout in the situations I mentioned will have their own agenda regarding Advancement. The troop is repsonsible to keep track of the requirments, although one could say that scout has his handbook for that, and to be sure the Scout has opportunities to learn, use and have skills signed off but the heart of Advancement is what the scout makes it. At Eagle Courts of Honor I want to hear the Scout thank those who were there for him and helped him and guided him. I don't want to hear a scout thank Mr GreyEagle for kicking his butt all the way to Eagle. I have mine, I can't earn another. -

First class in first year - or not
OldGreyEagle replied to Scoutfish's topic in Advancement Resources
This may be a regional thing, but this is my impression for First Class in the First year. Its not about the scout, let me say this again, its not about the scout. Its about the Troop having a program so that if a scout was so inclined they could earn First Class in a year. IF and that is a big IF, the scout is so inclined, he could earn First CLass in a year. That means the Troop scheduled the activities that a Scout needs to earn first class. Enough events, enough campouts, that sort of thing. I do not ever remember anyone ever saying a scout doesnt have to do a skill again once he gets it signed off. The scout skills are used in the proram. The Scouting Program revolves around the scouting skills. If you scouts are not presented with opportunities to use the skills, they will lose them but each event, each activity the troop/patrol has is an opportunity to use scout skills. If anyone thinks First Class First Year means you force the scouts to advance, then they do not understand the Advancement Program. Leastwise, that is how I thought it was supposed to be -
BSA and Hunting Good or Ill Fitting

pon further review I think I should get some props for the STC reference with the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It may be one of the few times the Ancient Mariner was used in a pro hunting argument... -
So, Pierre asked me something last night that I wanted to get your thoughts on. What do you think of Pierre getting a small tattoo. A fleur de lis, behind the knee, along side the knee - ish kinda place? For Pierre, it would be a Tattoo of his homeland, for me it would be a symbol of scouting. What do you think?

One of the best assests of this Forum is the ability to trade ideas and views with people who are not at all like us. My impression of the West Knot as one that could be "bought" came from a few guys who "bought" theirs and continued to brag about it. It left a sour taste in my mouth. They were jerks about it so I formed an opinion that all West knotters were jerks which is of course a false conclusion that I should have known better thna to make I had never considered that a West knot could be given in another person's name. So, I apologize for my comments. Obviously there was a hole in my logic. Thanks to all who share Time, Talent and Treasure in the service of Scouting. I now have to work on a sore hammie, its tought getting ones foot out of ones month although with all the practice I have, you would think it would be getting easier -

What can I say? Another edition of Knot Fun... ANyway, I have a few knots, there are the one from my youth, Arrow of Light Knot, Eagle Knot and Religious award as a youth. Then there are the adult ones, Silver Beaver, Council Venturing Leadership, Religious Award as an Adult, District Award of Merit and Training. All of the adult ones were "awarded" because of someone else's nomination. The training one? The Scoutmaster of the troop kept track of a bunch of us and put us in for it. So, I have a bunch of knots which I wear to honor the people who thought enough of me to nominate me for those awards. So I wear them But to "Buy"? a knot? That just seems well Tacky, but as I wear all mine, I guess those West guys should be allowed to wear theirs as well regardless of how I feel. I am not sure I agree with everyone all the time anyway and they with I -
And the inconsistentcy between what BadenP said "...You may not know this but up through the 1960's the Catholic Church did not sponsor the BSA and told their membership that the BSA was to be avoided..." and my personal and familial experience and the link posted by Rooster http://www.catholicscouting.org/NCCS_History/NCCS_Chronology/nccs_chronology.html Shall go unaddressed...

Questions about what is appropriate
OldGreyEagle replied to VentureMom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
As Jerry Sandusky preps himself to go to Court today to ask that the charges against hin be dismissed, one has to ask how many years he has been married, how children he has and how that makes/made him any less a threat? -
Well now Rooster, with you providing this and Beavah's work (at times) defending the Catholic Church there may be somehting to this ecumenism I hear so much about. I was in Cub Scouts at the Pack chartered by the Church and my mother was the Den Mother and one year was the Parish "women of the year" got her picture in the paper and everything. The picture was of her in her Den Mother uniform. For as long as I can remember as a kid, I always wanted to be a priest. Didnt stop wanting to be one until the summer between Junior and Senior Year in High School and in all that time no member of the clergy ever asked me to stop being a Boy Scout or to be "careful" of the BSA teachings. Once in 1968 the Rector of the Seminary hosted a Catholic Scout Retreat. I dont remember anyhting negative being said by him about the BSA
-
BadenP, I want to be sure I understand what you are saying, Thats the Catholic Church through the 60's had an issue with the BSA? The Roman Catholic parish I grew up in has a Boy Scout Troop that started in 1951, my father received the St Georgs Medal for his work in the Troop at the Seminary I was going to in 1968, its amzing that a CHurch that had no or little regard for the BSA would have changed its stance so quickly to come up with the St George medal in such a short period of time http://www.bsatroop65-wd.org/ It was always chartered by the Holy Ghost which is a Catholic Church. Were we participating in an illicit organization at the time?
