Well I am a moderator and let me say this about that, as soon as I figure out who is saying what and what they mean or don't mean I can assure you action will be taken or it won't.

Are you familiar with kerosene "turbo" heaters? They may be called somehting else in your neck of the woods or those heaters they show during football games
-
So, you could build a fire, with a wooden "reflector" and have the guests sit in a protected area, at the very least under "pop-ups" and tarps wrapped around them.

Gee, I guess I didn't wear my subtle shoes. I don't know why we have to revert to the bad old days when everyone knew anytime anything Polish was mention it was shorthand for crude, ignorant and unseemly. It's funny how with all the ethnicities in the world, the forum kept talking about Polish cannons like there was no problem with it. No one put the phrase in quotation marks and I was even directed to Google the phrase as I guess I am too Polish to know to do that myself. With all the cracks about Wood Badge for the 21rst Century, I dont understand why no one commented on Diversity and the need not to use disparaging labels. Madame Curie was born Maria Skłodowska in Warsaw, Poland. Copernicus, the Astronomer who first denied the earth as the center of the Universe was Polish and Pope John Paul II was Polish and Lech Walesa, the man who helped found Solidarność (the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc) was Polish. We all know no one would post the N-word on the forum because it would be removed. No one would make reference to the supposed penurious nature of Jewish people, comments about what a woman can and can't do are debated with passion, but Polish Cannon is thrown about with no regard to its utterly offensive nature. Yes, I am a little sensitive about this and I don't want any PMs on this topic, just knock off the Polish bashing crape

As a loyal Kielbasa eating, Pierogie dipping, Czarnina sipping son of Krakow, I have to ask just what is a Polish Cannon in this context. It's not a term I have heard before. Now, if someone would have said Polish Rifle, I would have said Ron Jaworski and moved on.

And here I thought the best way of upgrading the forum would be to eliminate all the generally whiny know-nothing scouters that obviously dont have a clue about the BSA and its programs and are identified by the fact they hold views different from mine

I am sure you realize that capitals denote yelling. You came here, asked for opinions and you got them. Why you are upset I am not sure. I gave you the BSA policy which I tend to do when people ask a question and there is a BSA policy. Whether or not you follow it is up to you

From the Guide to Safe Scouting : The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances at encampments or activities on property owned and/or operated by the Boy Scouts of America, or at any activity involving participation of youth members. Adult leaders should support the attitude that young adults are better off without tobacco and may not allow the use of tobacco products at any BSA activity involving youth participants There isnt really a question , the youth may not smoke while on a Crew activity, and neither should the adults. However, things being what they are, its up to the adults to enforce the policy

from what I understand, and this is hearsay as none of the moderators here are anything but volunteer moderators who have no dealing with the website management, the website is funded in part by an advertising subscription services that will flash ads based on what is being talked about. Talk about paintball, and you will get paintball ads, talk about camo, and we will see camo ads, talk about sex and pedophilia and we get lawyer ads. -
Looking for vectored Cub Scout Graphics
OldGreyEagle replied to tomacatden6's topic in New to the Forum?
what makes a graphic "vectored"? I have a lot of images but dont know if any would fit your requirements, sorry I am such a lame graphics guy -
One of my most memorable scouting moments occurred at the 2001 National Jamborree. The scheduled closing show was rained out so we had to make do with what the attendees could come up with. Many "good" acts were quickly put together but the one I remember most was the older scouter who played "somewhere over the rainbow on his "saw"". I has scouts asking me what was he doing and I was taken back to B&W TV and Ted Macks original Amateur hour. To see him on stage, mesmerizing the attendees while filling the air with his music is something I will never forget, never give up, never surrender.

Scouts' food drive moved to prevent possible electioneering

Just wondering if all organic no-pesticide vegtables will count more those conventionally raised and if chemical free free range chicken would count twice as much as conventional fowl -
Scouts' food drive moved to prevent possible electioneering
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Any word if the placement of the Food Drive decreased/increased/ didnt effect the amount of food collected? And if less fod was collected any idea how the shortfall will be made up? -
Actually, having reviwed the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook I dont find any mention that fundraising must be done, the only comment on fundraising is the following: "The project also may not be performed for a business or an individual, be of a commercial nature, or be a fund-raiser. (Fund-raising is permitted only for securing materials or supplies needed to carry out your project.)" I dont see this section requiring fundraising so if a scout wanted to self-fund his project, on what grounds would you reject that notion?

what does the APL's rank situation have to do with him being an APL? And why did your son appoint him APL?

Hunt, I read your post and this thought ran through my head: "... Government of the People, by the People and for the People..." So the part about "for the people" is pretty much out the window although I can sympathize that the window has been overutlized for quite a while. Well, as Marvin Lee Aday would say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad

I want to address the issue of what do you tell the young scout and encouraging him to wear the complete uniform. Tell the scout that you agree he got a raw deal and now its up to him to do something about it. He can either quit scouts and moan and complain about how screwed he was or he can become a model of scout uniforming to the point that no one could ever not recognize him for wearing a complete uniform. He can complain how the "big" kids always mess with the little guys and push them around or he could make it a goal that he will be elected to the SPL position and then make sure that uniform inspections are done corrrectly. One could say that he was a victim of an unfair act, either he can celebrate his victimness or he can make it a point to assure that such an event will not occur again and work towards that end. It is of such things charactor, good or bad is formed(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Ah Healthcare, the favorite whipping boy because it's easier to blame an institution than a single person, well usually. To understand the ferderal government's role in healthcare, we have to go back to 1965 and Lyndon B Johnson's "Great Society". One of the parts of the great society was that old people shouldnt have to die in their homes, that is, wouldn't it be a better idea if old people could die with dignity in an ultramodern medical surrounding that best fits the greatest country on earth. Thus Medicare was born, a federal government program to pay the hospital bills of the elderly, or so it would seem. Today of course, Medicare and hospitals want to discharge patients home or to Hospice facilities where they can die in dignity surrounded by the ones they love. The point that is often missed is that hospitals don't get paid that they bill to Medicare. Medicare started the concept of paying accoding to diagnosis for Inpatients. When a Medicare patient goes into the hospital for a total hip and its uncomplicated, the hospital gets $x regardless of what they charge. When a Medicare patient goes for an outpatient chest xray, the hospital will get a predetermined amount of money set by a national number and manipulated by local variations of cost. It doesnt matter what a hospital charges, they get paid what Medicare decides. The same thing happens with most Insurances. Hospitals have a list price like most car dealers, its a starting point, nothing more. Interestingly enough, healthcare is one of the few industries where it gets penalized for increasing efficiency.

I wonder how the 15% rule fits in with the phrase "not for profit"?

Interesting thread, it does give a subtle hint to the notions and conceptions people have about Venturing. So, somebody hears that Venturing Crews can "make-up" their own uniform, so they assume it would be ok if a Crew decided to adopt the Cub Scout uniform as the Crew uniform, this may sound silly to some, but if the Crew has some hard core EMO fans, it could work especially if the front is tied up to expose a bare midriff (EMO is a style of music, usually it consists of 5 guys dressed all in black and heavy make-up, usually one is crying). But, no they can't really do this. The Crew can't adopt the Cub or Boy Scout uniform, it can use the Venturing uniform of course. Now, this is where it gets interesting for Camp Crews. I have seen plenty of camps where the staff wear Venturing green shirts and then boy scout uniform shorts. The reason is simple, the girls cant wear the tan boy scout shirt and no body wants to buy the Venturing shorts so they wear boy scout shorts. So, the very role models most scouts look up too and want to be like are wearing an incorrect uniform. OK, so it doesnt seem like a big deal, but when a scouter tries to keep his Crew from adopting the Green shirt, boy scout short uniform he is placed in the position of explaining the Camp Staff, the "best" scouts the scouts have seen are doing it wrong. It does lead some scouts to wonder where the staff is wrong in other areas and thats not a path we want to start down. Maybe the best approach would be to have the staff wear the Venturing shirts with wheat colored dockers or similar pants or wheat colored shorts, anything but official boy scout shorts. Anyway, no green tabs on the tan boy scout shirt. Then again there is an adult in the district who wears silver, green and red tabs on his uniform as he is a committee member of a troop, a crew and is the OA chapter advisor so I guess I shouldnt complain too loudly at a single tab being of the wrong color.

BSA not subject to Am. with Disabilities Act
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
See Ed, its comments like your last one that leads Merlyn to say that you can't learn, because you are stuck on the same old broken record. The BSA indeed has stopped, or started to stop chartering units to schools and other govermental units because they were indeed tired of throwing money at lawsuits and get this, losing! You know why? Because governmental units cannot own and operate private organizations that discriminate, which is what the BSA does and I am ok with that. What I am not ok with is having the same argument with the same issues reviewed, reviewed and reviewed. We are a private organization and have membership standards,we know thats legal. We need to be sure private organizations charter our units as governmental units cannot. You may not like it, I may not like it but we need to recognize the facts and move on, something very difficult for some, but it can be done. I dont want any of my FOS money going to a lawyer who is in a losing battle. -
