Panic is setting in!!!
OldGreyEagle replied to alexsma's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Hey ask away, remember there are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask them, wait no, that not it. There are no stupid questions, only stupid people who dont know enough to ask them in an intelligent... no thats not it either,,, anyway, ask away -
Apology accepted, but the point remains, we ask where the ACLU is when the new public school discriminates based on race and/or religion and anything done before that is speculation

I think I would like more information about the "butt" situation. It could be something like, "hey Charlie, get your butt over here, Environmental Science starts in 10 minutes" or it could have been "Hey Charlie, why are you always such a butt?" Not quite a swear word either time, but still worth finding out the context. Saying "my knife sucks" isn't swearing in my opinion, but its not refined language either. I wouldnt mind if an adult corrected my sons language. Messing with another persons food/drink is never ok, even if the target is ok with it. The next target may not be and I am not sure which point of the scout law is honored by sticking a rock in some one elses drink. So the older boys wont be going along if "that woman" comes? Do any of them have parents who would fill in for the leader? Is this a case of youthful masculine pride being injured by someone who dared call them on questionable behavior? Nothing I see explained is worth sending anyone home, yet there seems to be alot of emotion invested in this that may indicate other issues are at work

Panic is setting in!!!
OldGreyEagle replied to alexsma's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
When I did Wood Badge, I was lucky enough to be placed in the Bear Patrol. Seeing as I had grown up in Chicago when Sayers and Butkus prowled Wrigley Field (Cubs in the Summer, Bears in the Fall) I had my trusty Bears towel. As soon as I found out I was to be a Bear, I grabbed my towel, folded over the Chicgo on it and placed it on our table, it was the snarling Bear face with the text "Bears" under it. The SPL was filling out a seating chart looked at us and asked what patrol we were, saw the "Flag" and said "Oh, how did you do that so fast?". I took the Bears fight song which has been rattling around in my head for 45 years or so and made it our Patrol Song. We acomplished that in 15 minutes because of serendipity, not because we were an high performing team, sometimes things just work out. Now, in the subject of tickets, that just burns my butt. For something that is talked about incessantly, cannonized in the the Gilwell song and the heart of the Wood Badge experience, it really isnt expressed well as to what it is. As it stands, our Course Director, SPL and Troop Guide all explained ticket items to me, they all meant the same thing, but expresed it differently and just well enough to confuse the heck out of me. Listen to patrol mates and their ideas, to examples that are given and follow them. Dont copy them, but follow their style and content. Dont fret about it, relax and let the ticket items come to you, experience the Zen of Tickets -
The title of the thread I am responding to is titled "Where is the ACLU", in this thread were comments about changing the regular curriculum and I was pointing out a public school with a radically changed curriculum. Now, Leroy got admitted because he could dance and his partner was not. Seeing as lack of dancing ability is not a protected civil right, she was out of luck. Before we whip ourselves into a frenzy about what we think the ACLU will do, I suggest we wait for the school to form and begin to admit students. When caucasian christians are denied entrance to the public school then it is time to ask where the ACLU is, at that point, I beleive Merlyn would have sympathy for white christians being denied entrance to a public school simply because they are white and christian

Have had numerous patrols ask me about this honor and many have told me they were going to be the first patrol in the troop to earn it, so far the honoe of being the first patrol to earn it has gone unfilled

Clarification on Advancement
OldGreyEagle replied to onehouraweekmy's topic in Advancement Resources
I see it as having those merit badges earned while in scouting, not just at the rank below the one being worked on. For example, the requirements for Star are: 1. Be active in your troop and patrol for at least 4 months as a First Class Scout. 2. Demonstrate scout spirit by living the Scout Oath (Promise) and Scout Law in your everyday life. 3. Earn 6 merit badges, including 4 from the required list for Eagle.* ___________________________________(required for Eagle)* ___________________________________(required for Eagle)* ___________________________________(required for Eagle)* ___________________________________(required for Eagle)* ___________________________________ ___________________________________ 4. While a First Class Scout, take part in service projects totaling at least 6 hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster. 5. While a First Class Scout, serve actively 4 months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility (or carry out a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project to help the troop) Note requirements 1, 4 and 5 reference "as" or "while" a First Class Scout. Since the verbage for earning merit badges # 3 contains no such language, then the scout can utilize any merit badge earned at any time, at any rank. My spider sense tells me there is a heck of a back story here... -
Scoutmaster Changeover ceremonies?
OldGreyEagle replied to Gunny2862's topic in Open Discussion - Program
here you go Gunny, anyway its a start: Induction Of a Scoutmaster Materials: Scoutmaster HandbookScoutmaster badge of office Participants: Senior Patrol Leader Troop Committee ChairOutgoing Scoutmaster (called Scoutmaster)Incoming Scoutmaster (called Scoutmaster Candidate)Chartered Organizational Representative (Special setup: Present Scoutmaster should have his or her badge of office loosely sewn on the left shoulder sleeve or attached using tape) (The Chartered Organizational Representative asks for all members of the Troop to stand behind him or her. The Troop stands in a semi-circle behind the Chartered Organizational Representative) Chartered Organizational Representative: This evening marks another significant mark in the history of our Troop and this community; for tonight, as you are aware, we install a new Scoutmaster and say so long to our present Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster). Before I ask (name of Scoutmaster) to come forward, I would like to review what a Scoutmaster does. To provide this explanation, I now call upon the Leader of this Troop, (name of Senior Patrol Leader), the Senior Patrol Leader of our Troop. (Chartered Organizational Representative stands to side and allows Senior Patrol Leader to come center) Senior Patrol Leader: (name of Scoutmaster) works closely with me as I lead the Troop. As Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster) and I manage the program and he (she) insures that I get the training and coaching I need to do my job and to lead other boys in our Troop. (Name of Scoutmaster) also works with the Troop Committee Chair and members of our Troop Committee to insure that the proper support is given to whatever we as Troop leaders plan -- a campout, a day trip, or just a regular Troop meeting. The Scoutmaster is also the visual example for all of us here and works hard to insure that each Scout is guided in the direction toward Eagle and is making good progress toward his goal. (Senior Patrol Leader may address specific comments about Scoutmaster and wishes him or her well). Chartered Organizational Representative : At this time, I wish to call upon our Scoutmaster, (name of Scoutmaster) to come forward. (Scoutmaster comes forward). We have enjoyed working with you over the period you have given to Scouting as Scoutmaster of this Troop. (at this time, various plaques, certificates or other items may be presented to the outgoing Scoutmaster and the Scoutmaster may make some remarks and comments about his or her service.) It now becomes time for us to appoint your successor and to induct him (her) as our new Scoutmaster. It gives me great honor to introduce (name of Scoutmaster candidate),our candidate for the position of Scoutmaster. (Scoutmaster candidate comes forward and stands on one side of Chartered Organizational Representative ) Chartered Organizational Representative : It is the desire of this Troop's Chartering Organization to appoint and commission you as Scoutmaster of Troop (number). As you have heard from our Senior Patrol Leader, you main job is to advise the Troop officers and assist in their training and coaching as they develop the Troop's program. We are placing the confidence of our families and our Scouts onto your shoulders as you continue to provide a quality program for our Scouts and this community. Will you accept our nomination and serve as Scoutmaster of this Troop? Scoutmaster Candidate: Yes, I will do my best. (The Senior Patrol Leader brings the Troop's flag forward and in front of the Troop Committee Chair. He then hands the flag to the Scoutmaster and then leaves. The Chartered Organizational Representativecomes forward and takes the place of the Senior Patrol Leader. The Scoutmaster then gives the flag to the Chartered Organizational Representative or Head as Troop Committee Chair states: Troop Committee Chair The Scouting program is a part of the community service mission of (name of chartered organization). It is highly appropriate that the symbol of the Troop, the Troop's flag, be returned to the representative (head) of (name of chartered organization), because it is this organization that gives final approval to adults working with our youth. (The Scoutmaster then removes his or her badge of office and hands it to the Chartered Organizational Representative) The Chartered Organizational Representative or Head then invites the Scoutmaster candidate to place his or her left hand on the pole of the Troop's flag, above that of the Chartered Organizational Representative's hand. Chartered Organizational Representative: Please raise your hand in the Sign of the Scout and repeat after the Troop Committee Chair. (Scoutmaster Candidate does so) Troop Committee Chair: (said to allow for repeating by Scoutmaster Candidate) I promise to do my best ---to be worthy of my office as Scoutmaster --- for the sake of my Scouts --- This Troop --- and the World Brotherhood of Scouting. (The Chartered Organizational Representative then hands the new Scoutmaster his/her badge of office, the New Scoutmaster may make a few comments, thank his predescessor and sits down)(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
I was was wondering about having a High School with a curriculum far removed from the ordinary and how unfair or unjust that was. Then, I had a thought, the 1980 movie Fame, about the New York High School for the Performing Arts, it is a Public High School but with a radically different curriculum than the norm. I see this as the same. The real test will be when a student of northern european descent applies for admission and is refused. Anything until then is speculation, we have to see how it works out

Over the week end I worked as a helper for a vendor at the 32nd Annual Clearwater Festival held at Sunset Park in Asbury Park, NJ. Put on by the Monmouth County Friends of Clearwater it is NJ Largest Enviro Festival. It was a great time, Al Stewart performed (Year of the Cat) amoung local bands and there were many many "causes" and groups there. The Clean Up Shark River Coalistion was next to the Defend the Wildlife exhibit hard by the NJ Peace Action Society close to the Vegan booth. I think there were a lot of dedicated people there, showing that our society has a lot of motivated people. I did want to ask the Peace Society how we are to make peace with people who want us dead, but I held off. The Vegan society had barkers who claimed that "Going Vegan was Natures Way", I wanted to ask if a lion bringing down a gazelle on the Serengeti was then unnatural, but I didn't. Perhaps the most striking thing about the week end was the weather, beautiful cool breezes all day Saturday and on Sunday it was downright chilly most of the day until a full rain storm moved in. All in all it was a great week end Most of the performers who had been at this festival in previous year said it was great this year as most years its so hot they could hardly stand it. I did notice on Sunday that the stage which was advertised as being powered by solar energy on Saturday was assissted by a generator as Sunday was quite overcast. The surfriders coalition was doing a brisk business selling sweatshirts. Oh, by the way, this years theme was "Global Warming, You better sweat it", as it was, I was looking for a fleece...(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

I always wanted to watch you two butt heads

I'd love to set a couple of scouts in front of a wood pile and back up a truck and then tell them to come and get me when you have a cord loaded on the truck

Does that make us naughty? this is null and void... or is that redundant?

I gotta tell you, we do a lot of talking on the forum and some claim its all about nothing and then when we start to debate who originated the concept of zero, well I have to think maybe "they" are right...

looking for ideas for a book on Scouting
OldGreyEagle replied to writer's topic in New to the Forum?
Hey writer, do lots of research on the field, and I am sure you will find many wonderful examples of scouting in many communities. Ways that helped shape individuals and the community. You may also find individuals who are best described as "cranks", I shall leave it to you to identify them -
Specialty Interest Venturing
OldGreyEagle replied to trailfinder52@yahoo.com's topic in Venturing Program
Use of Council property Access to COuncil and District Training (Ok, not always an advantage) Access to a recognition program, the Bronzes, Ranger, Silver, Gold, Trust, Quest, and Quartermaster Ability to find like minded groups Access to BSA insurance (or so the DE keeps saying) I will keep thinking (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Camping - - - - - One night or two?
OldGreyEagle replied to Gonzo1's topic in Camping & High Adventure
The Troop I serve usually does 2 nighters On a purely pragmatic note, if a scout needs 20 nights in a tent for the camping merit badge and only 7 can be from long term camping then he needs 13 more nights, that can either be 6 two nighters and a single, or 13 single night campouts. Ask the parents how that will work out PS. Let me add to there legions who want to know why this is an issue with the parents or committee, its up to the boys -
Perhaps a forum member in one of the areas listed could call the local ACLU chapter about the issues cited and tell us what they have to say...

Then again having a Committee that are just puppets doesnt seem right either...

Multiple Ranks at one Court of Honor?
OldGreyEagle replied to onehouraweekmy's topic in Advancement Resources
this is from the BSA website on Advancement: First, the Scout learns. Much of his learning comes from other boys in his patrol or troop and by active participation in troop program. His patrol activities are directed toward the skills he needs. Every troop hike, camping trip, or other activity offers potential learning experiences. A Scout learns to pitch a tent by pitching one, to use a compass by finding directions, and to cook a meal by having to prepare and eat it. Second, the Scout is tested. The specific requirements determine the kind of testing. Verbal testing is sufficient in some instances. In other instances, a Scout must demonstrate his skills by doing. Third, the Scout is reviewed. The purpose of the review is to ensure that all requirements for advancement have been met. This includes a check of the Scout's attitude and practice of the ideals of Scouting, in addition to his Scoutcraft skills. The decision regarding whether a Scout has met the required standards to qualify for rank advancement begins with the troop and, for the Eagle Scout rank, is approved by the district, local council, and finally, the National Council. Fourth, the Scout is recognized. The final step in advancement involves presentation of the badge, usually at a ceremony before the entire troop. http://www.scouting.org/factsheets/02-516.html I didn't see anything regarding awarding one rank at a time, he learns, is tested, reviewed and recognized. -
I can't say I always wear a complete uniform, but I sure do try. This is because of an incident at a scout meeting. The Scoutmaster was in trying to get the boys to wear the uniform mode and then calls for me to come up as an example of how to wear the uniform. Luckily, I had changed my socks to uniform ones before I came to the meeting, I almost didnt, but I did. The scoutmaster had me indicate that I had on scout socks, belt, necker, etc. Later he said he knew he could count on me to have the complete uniform. I make sure I am complete as he has done this a few times since. Then, a scout who is also a Crew member received his Eagle. I wore the Venturing Uniform. A scout asked why I was not wearing uniform pants, I indicated they were and he didnt belive me. I made a big show of showing him the little green Venturing symbol on the tiny tag on the venturing trousers. Then I showed him the venturing symbol on my socks and belt. The scout acted surprised and impressed, but he still doesnt always wear a complete uniform, but I do

Actually the thread I started on the Deep Purple and Steppenwolf concert I went to didn't have much to do with scouting either but no one objected. There were a few responses and the forum moved on. If a topic does not resonate with the members, it fades from view and we move on, thats what we want to have happen

How are the transportation possibilities to these places? Can they handle the 40,000 or more staff and participants? I have no problem in moving it around
