School SafeRides program continues without gods
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Doesnt the exisitence of this program give an implied consent to law breaking? The school has this program to give students "safe" rides home if the student is trashed and cant do it alone, and the BSA condones this activity by providing transportation. Is this a mixed message? -

Portillo's may have come down a bit, I remember when it was the one wagon there at the corner of Mannheim and Irving Mentioning Mariska's certainly took me back. I attended what was then known as St Charles Borremeo Seminary situation at Rte 53 and Airport Rd, I beleive the address has since been changed to 402 S Independence Blvd, Romeoville. One night a group of us were out with the rector and we stopped at Mariska's for a "snack" I had one of those roast beefy things and was hooked -

Two Closings CALL FROM YOUTH I'd rather see a lecture than hear one any day. I'd rather one should walk with me than merely point the way. The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear. Fine words can be confusing, but example's always clear. And best of all the teachers are adults who live their creed. For to see the good in action is what everybody needs. I can soon learn how to do it if you let me see it done. I can watch your hands in action but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very wise and true, But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live and rule For I may understand you and the high advice you give, But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. second closing The Scouting Promise SCOUTING promises you the great outdoors. As a Scout, you can learn how to camp and hike without leaving a trace and how to take care of the land. You'll study wildlife up close and learn about nature all around you. There are plenty of skills for you to master, and you can teach others what you have learned. Everyone helping everyone else-that's part of Scouting, too. SCOUTING promises you friendship. Members of the troop you join might be boys you already know, and you will meet many other Scouts along the way. Some could become lifelong friends. SCOUTING promises you opportunities to work toward the Eagle Scout rank. You will set positive goals for yourself and then follow clear routes to achieve them. SCOUTING promises you tools to help you make the most of your family, your community, and your nation. The good deeds you perform every day will improve the lives of those around you. You will be prepared to help others in time of need. SCOUTING promises you experiences and duties that will help you mature into a strong, wise adult. The Scout Oath and the Scout Law can guide you while you are a Scout and throughout your life. Adventure, learning, challenge, and responsibility - the promise of Scouting is all this and more

I have been frothing at the mouth to post some other possibilities and rather than run myself ragged, I will post a few more: Another opening: Light of Scouting Opening, Court of Honor Start the ceremony in complete darkness. Start with a single candle torch that represents the Light of Scouting. SPL (Holding up a candle): "The Light of Scouting burns within every Scout, giving us direction in our daily lives." SPL (Moving to three candles): "The first duty of a Scout is to God, Country, and Scout Law." TROOP (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the first candle): "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law." SPL: "The second duty of a Scout is to other people." TROOP: (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the second candle) "To help other people at all times." SPL: "The third duty of a Scout is to himself." TROOP: (LOUDLY, as SPL lights the third candle) "To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

So how mnay of you guys watch Top Chef? -
This is an opening for a Fall Court of Honor, the Troop I serve changes SPL and ASPL etc. at Court of Honor time which explains some of the language used in the opening: MC: Color Guard, Post the colors (Color Guard posts the colors) MC: Ladies and Gentleman please join me in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance MC: As the days begin to shorten, as the temperatures begin to cool, as students return to school, And as leadership assumes new roles, we celebrate a time of advancement and change. Would The Honor Patrol recite the Opening (The Honor Patrol reads the following) To everything - There is a season - And a time for every purpose under heaven A time to be born A time to die A time to plant A time to reap A time to kill A time to heal A time to laugh A time to cry To everything - There is a season - And a time for every purpose under heaven A time to build up A time to break down A time to dance A time to mourn A time to cast away stones A time to gather stones together A time to weep To everything - There is a season - And a time for every purpose under heaven A time of war A time of peace A time of love A time of hate A time you may embrace A time to refrain from embracing To everything - There is a season - And a time for every purpose under heaven A time to gain A time to lose A time to rend A time to sew A time to love A time to hate A time of peace We swear it's not too late Now, depending on the make up of your troop you can either reference this as the Byrds Opening or Ecclesiastes and shorten the verses if need be(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Maybe some of the trained legal professionals can do a quick primer (if possible) on what constitutes entrapment versus a legal stakeout?

This may have to do with geography, but with all the Rec League sports that my son was involved with, all the coaches had to attend a "coaches seminar" before they could coach. In soccer the rules and strategy were emphasized, in baseball, having all the kids play was the biggest issue but overall if you didnt attend, you were not the coach and oddly enough, every coach attended. Now, your experinces may be different

What kind of Committee do you have?
OldGreyEagle replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Hey, I could be wrong, but if the Scoutmaster is chosen by the Committee, then do they have the ability to remove him/her? And if not, why not? -
What kind of Committee do you have?
OldGreyEagle replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am not so sure the Committee should be charged with selecting the unit leader. I am in an Eatery at McCarran airport right now on the second of three legs to get home, so I cant quote a resource. The selection of the Scoutmaster is something the COR and IH should be doing. Now, I know some of you may think, sure thats a good idea, and it may even be the way its written, but the IH and COR wont/arent/have no clue to do it so the COmmittee does. The problem then becomes if the COmmittee selects the unit leader, they may get the idea they should be able to "control" the unit leader and that is not the COmmittees function. They do not hire, nor can they fire the unit leader, thats the IH and COR's job. The Troop committee I serve is very collaborative. We dont vote, we discuss and make decisions by consensus. -

Growing up around Chicago, you werent eating until you got a Portillo's hot dog and ate it along Irving Park and watched the planes take off and land at O'hare. Pizza at Giordano's is good, but Nancy's Stuffed is the King. In the Lehigh Valley, Pa I am partial to fastnaughts, Pierogies and Kielbasa, which was also quite god in Chicago as long as that reddish colored stuff isnt called kielbasa. Favorite all time was my grandmothers Czarnina served on Christmas Day from the duck who had lived on the back porch since Thanksgiving -
Yah Beavah, you are right I suppose, still when people dont want other people to know what they are doing, it always makes my hackles stand up, whether they "can" or not
-
Seeing as there are no closed organizations in the BSA, I am not sure how a committee could be "closed"

He Made a Mistake - Will You Turn Your Back on Him?
OldGreyEagle replied to Rikki12's topic in Issues & Politics
Rikki, as a youth I was sexually abused by a Catholic Priest but I didnt then or now color the whole of the catholic church clergy by the actions of one From what you have posted, you appear to have a genuine beef, but including all professionals in one group when we can hardly determine what you are talking about is not going to clarify the situation. Making huge generalizations doesnt help us understand your predicament. What happened? -
Hey so you have to have a little moxie to drink a little Moxie? Who knew!

Jambo, what's worse is that from what I have been told some states actually allow females to vote and own property! As Kurtz would say, "the horror, the horror" Youth and language has always been a issue. Who can forget Mayor George Shinn telling his daughter Zaneeta to watch her phraseology? How many Twilight Zone fans do we have? In the movie version of "Its a Good Life", how does Kathleen Quinlan's charactor break free of Anthony's tyrrany? By telling him he is behaving badly and setting boundaries. It's what kids need and desire and not to do so creates more Anthonies

Outdoor Article Restart - Is BSA Training Sufficient?
OldGreyEagle replied to BrentAllen's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Powderhorn is about resources and where to go for information and where to go to acquire skills, its not about teaching skills Maybe we need a new direction on this. Not everyone who becomes a scoutmaster is going to be a he-man outdoorsman who can field dress a slain hind with one hand while building the reflector oven which will be used to bake the loins into a sumptious dinner hailed by Tom Colicchio. While a scoutmaster may be a white water enthusiast, will he/she then also be a master climber and have Wilderness First aid certification to boot? And if such a person would exist, and I know some do, how would they maintain such skills? From what I read on the forums, its getting hard enough to get people to fill scouting roles without asking them to also become certified Maine guides, or beyond. Then again, I think, what do we repeat over and over here? Its not what the adults want to do, its the boys program, we have to do what the boys want to do if we want them comming back year after year. A few years back there was a TV commercial for scouting, it was a scout on a rappel line asking a climber on a rack face if this was his wallet. Great commercial, but how many troops can go climbing once a month? SOme I am sure, but not the majority, climbing is one expensive sport to bring a group into. When I first started with the Crew, I soon learned High Adventure = High Cost, let alone high training costs and time committments. Perhaps its time to develop high adventure skill people, on either district, multi-District COuncil or Area basis. Identify people with the skill who will take a group out and provide the technical expertise requierd to do an outing correctly. There are Commissioner Corps, what about a High Adventure Corp, interested people who are trained to make treks happen. It would be best if every troop has such people, but reality says that is not likely and alternatives need to be developed -
What should be on a boys bookshelf?

the things you learn online... I have read 17 of the books le Voyageur reccommends and note that he has more than dabbled with Hermann Hesse. Tess of the D'ubervilles is one of the saddest stories ever written competing with the Grapes of Wrath le Voyageur, did you ever read Narcissus and Goldmund? Or the Journey to the East? -
I have studied Management, I even have an MPA (Master of Public Administration). I need to point out that studying Management and being a good manager are not necessarily related. But one concept has stuck with me throughout all these years. In any business there are Line Workers and Staff workers. Line Workers are the employees who actually do the work of the bussiness. For a Car Assembly Plant, they are the ones who work the "line" and assemble the cars. In an Accounting company, they are the ones who actually do the accounting. They produce the product/service the company sells. Then there are the Staff workers. These are positions that originally existed to support the Line Workers. Positions such as Personnel Managers, to hire and research benefit packages amoung other duties comes to mind. The Payroll Department, to make sure everyone gets paid on time, and in the correct amount. Now, you will be able to tell where I have usually worked Problems in Industries occur when the Staff positions control the business rather than the Line. A Staff worker may have a position in the Auto industry, the healthcare industry and in an Utility company in his career and never actually do anything different because they dont have to understand the product. Companies that traditionally do the best have people who understand their product leading them. Companies that have people who have a Staff Background in high management can struggle unless the management staff is in touch with its product

How long to Tenderfoot or First Class?
OldGreyEagle replied to Beavah's topic in Advancement Resources
Aquila, how does a program, such as First Class First Year miss any point completely? The program is set up to allow a scout to move from joining the Troop to attaining First Class in a year. In all of the BSA literature I have perused on the subject, I have not ever read anything that says the scout is not expected to meet all of the requirements. The purpose of FCFY is to have a Troop program active enough so that an active scout can achieve First Class in a year, but he still has to meet the requirements, the Troop program has to reinforce those skills. You say you have a 10 year old who will be getting First Class in a few months, like its a bad thing. If he has met the requirements, then he is First Class. If he has not met the requirements, and doesnt know a bowline from a taut line hitch, does not partial responsibility rest also with the Troop Program? The scout didnt sign off his own book, this 10 year old didnt set up the Troop program that does not reinforce scout skills. If the 10 year old can't function as a first class scout, dont blame the scout or the First Class First Year Program. Responsibility has to be with the adults who signed him off, reviewed him and sent him on without assuring the program was followed
