And here I thought Genoa was a salami or a city in Italy Correct me if I am wrong, like I have to ask, but it was my understanding that a ship doesnt fly a flag, it does have an ensign however which flies, anyway an old salt sea scout skipper told me that once... Pack, stream of consciousness stuff, besides, you guys are lucky, you only get to see what gets thru the filters, imagine living with all this stuff inside(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

You know, just as an aside, some of the bigger scandals in politics have "water" associated with them, from Watergate, to Whitewater and now to Backwater, memo to next President, what ever you do, dont touch anything or body that has "water" in the title...

So, it is stories like that told by Long Haul and Gold Winger that is the reason for Insurance Fixation. Should concern for it control our lives, no, but then again, its nothing to laugh at and ignore either

The Gilwell Song, Fall 2007
OldGreyEagle replied to ScoutDadof5's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I used to be an Bear, and a Good Old Bear too, But now I've finished Bearing and I don't know what to do. I'm growing old and feeble, and I can Bare no more! So I'm going to work my ticket if I can! Back to Gilwell, Happy Land, I'm going to work my ticket if I can! Da' Minsi Bears Oh Bother... -
Well Gold Winger I for one am not going to pile on a well meaning volunteer who has gone out of his way to serve the youth of your community. I do not have the background information to make a statement either if you are doing a fine job or were derelict in your duty. I think we all just need to trust that you are aware of the situation and are doing what you know is right.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Oddly enough it doesnt say "unless your homosexual"

On the other hand... Lets say the unit goes off and does the Laser Tag thing and something untoward happens. The CO is sued, and the CC looks to the District for help. She says, you know, we sent our new commissioner Gold Winger a schedule and Laser Tag was on it, if its against the rules, why didnt he tell us?

check http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=ds&terms=bsa+shooting+sports taken from the site: The National Shooting Sports Foundation is sponsoring a special grant program for BSA local councils. Grants are available for a variety of purposes, but innovative programs that will attract new members and entice current members to continue on the Scouting trail are most desirable. Projects to improve camp shooting ranges and upgrade equipment also meet the criteria for consideration. The minimum award is $2,500, and the maximum award is $10,000. I just found out about this today, 10/31/07, which is of course the final day to turn in an application. Has anyone ever heard of this prgoram? Is this an on-going thing? Will it be available next year? Anyone? Anyone?

Community Day backs away from BSA over its gay policy
OldGreyEagle replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
Perhaps my Brother Pack is being misunderstood. I know that as a youth in the early 60's being told by a friend of my father that the "black race" was cursed. When Cain slew his brother, he was marked, and this guy said the mark was black skin therefore all black skinned people were descendents of Cain. Seeing as how my hero of heroes at the time was Gale Sayers, I had a slightly different take on this concept. I did note on Sundays when Sayers got the ball, this guy cheered as loud as anyone. You know, yeah he can score 6 touchdowns for me, but please dont live in my neighborhood. The bible can be used to justify anything. Who is it that wants women to be subject to their husbands? Wasnt that an issue just a few years back? -

Philly raises scouts rent $199,999/year
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
"Probably just as well. When was the last time yeh heard of a legislature actually payin' attention to data when making a decision, anyways" Paying attention to the latest poll or how many people called to state their position to an issue is done. Whether ot not it relates to the facts of the issue is irrelevant -
Philly raises scouts rent $199,999/year

Lets just suppose on one of my business trips I perfrom the heimlich manuever on a fellow traveler who just happens to be Bill Gates and he gives me a billion dollars for saving his life. And I want to end the whole gay=pedophilia thing once and for all. So, I hire a team of experts who do an exhaustive review of the literature and independent research through personal interviews and surveys. Lets say my research, named the GreyEagle report says that Pedophilia and Homosexuallity are not linked. Well, then, you can bet that somehow OldGreyEagles posts on this forum will be found and then "they" can say see, his study just says what he beleives and there is no reaon to beleive him or his study. Then again, the study may find that there is a link to Pedophilia and Homosexuality and then the opposing side can say, well, he is a boy scout leader what did you expect his study to say. I think we are at a point where even if hard clean non-biased information were to be found, it would be tainted somehow by those opposed to whatever it says. The local option with the local Chartering Institution on the block for leader selection liability would allow communties to live what they beleive -
So, the adults made an error in judgement and all we seem to want to do is dwell in one thing. How about celebrating the time and committment made to the boys of the troop up to this lapse in judgement? Why judge at all, these are fine people volunteering their time for the good of the boys and to question their fitness as leaders is unbecomming to us as a forum. We need to honor all who work with the boys and trust them to be the best they can and know that whatever they do is ok

After reading this thread I am beginning to think you guys are besmirching the reputation of a fine scoutmaster who recently retired. He volunteered to be scoutmaster and through his hard work managed the scouting program for the boys in his troop. So he didnt follow the BSA polcies on advancement, policies we know are written by amateurs and since only 20% of all troops do Boards of Review correctly in the first place, why bother having them at all? As long as the intent of the policy was accomplished why worry about what happened in the past. Talk to the District Advancement Chair and Unit Commisioner? aw c'mon we know that the boys can't be bothered by what a bunch of old coots think and say and real scouting occurs at the unit level. There is no problem here, just remember the old scoutmaster for what he gave scouting and remember his legacy.

"A neighbor dropped a huge oak on my yard so I claimed it as mine. Cut it into firewood, a couple of cords worth...so why stop there? The deer that ate my garden last spring." Are we talking your neighbor ate your garden and you have a speliing issue? Or are you talking about the antlered R-O-U-S's that dominate the PA country size?

Down here on the floor of the Lehigh Valley we havent had a frost yet. Most of the trees are still mighty green for Oct 30th. Most of the time the Valley gets rain while the Pocono mountains get their share of the real white stuff, snow. They get so much that I was wondering about an activity my father told me about. Now, Dad was born in rural depression Maine and he has frequently told me how he and his brothers would go hunting rabbits in very deep snow. Rather than shoot them, they would kick up the rabbit out of his hiding spot and proceed to chase them down. The key was they were wearing snowshoes and ran across the snow while the rabbits would punch through the snow and have to leap up to move forward. So, the story (!) is in deep enough snow you can run a rabbit to exhaustion if you wear snow shoes.

Boy lead is the goal, but as with many things, most of the time in encompassed by the journey. If the instructions are missing the marks and you feel that the youth have been persented with the best instructions you can give, it may be time to set up a tag team of teachers. Assign one adult and one youth to teach the subject, the adult leads the youth and develops the instruction (be sure to be the "correct" adult for this). The team presents their instructions and then the youth serves as the mentor for the next instruction. It may take a few times, not all troops will have a glib public speaker but do have youth that can be developed. It takes time but the growing reslessness of the "audience" must be considered as well. It isnt very efficient if you lose 5 scouts to boredom while developing 1 scout as an instructor. I guess the analogy is (recognizing all analogies limp)you want the Instructors to take off the training wheels as soon as possible, but you have to be ready to put them back on again for safety reasons

Ok, I accept its going to happen (the sex part) and perhaps I am just a little jealous that my school wasnt as progressive. But after telling kids its ok to have sex, then how do we tell them not to have sex with _____________ (fill in the blank) or do we accept that adolescents have the capacity to consent to sex with another regardless of the partners age? If I seem stuck on that, its because I am. Nambla has said for years that sex is a normal expression of love between two people and children enjoy and grow from the experience, If we say we agree its natural for middle school children to have sex, then how do we make their partners illegal based on age?

The Scoutmaster is going to get a group of parents together and tell them what one person saw and then will do what the parents say? Yikes! The Charter Representative and the Institutional Head are the ones charged with selecting adult leaders, its their call whether anyone stays or goes. There should be a meeting about this with them, no one else. Least wise thats my opinion

How Much Commitment is Enough?
OldGreyEagle replied to adanecito's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well then, given what you have said, you have a Life Scout who was dropped from the charter due to inactivity. If he wants to come back and earn Eagle, he has every right to earn Eagle. And he should expect to have to fulfill every requirement and one of those is the six month position of responsibility during which he could also be active in the troop and patrol, but he still has/had to do it. What you did was correct, you set out the expectations, he decided not to earn Eagle. It was his choice -
So, if we are saying that middle schoolers are having sex, and we as a society are ok with that (and I have to accept it, even if I dont like it) and we feel that the adolescents should have access to birth control, then we are saying that they are old enough to engage in sex. Being old enough to engage in sex means that they willing to consensually participate in intimacy. I guess inevitably the question boils down to have sex with whom? 12 year old girls with 27 year old teachers? 13 year old boys with 45 year old males? We just said accept they are having sex, so now that they can have sex implicitly given permission by the school by providing the birth control, we now expect them to honor the age dividing line between consent and rape? How is that done? Nambla says the kids enjoy sex and are able to consent to it, isnt this the same thing?

So, its ok to not have a Christmas Celebration, and not have Santa Claus in a Public School as that is too religious and have a mid winters festival, which just may have some religious tinge to it as well, but we can have a slightly religious holiday such as Halloween because we feel sorry for the kids? Either we have religious holidays in public schools or we dont. Settling on which are major or minor holidays is not the issue. Halloween comes from a religious celebration so schools who celebrate it and then do not celebrate Christmas are being inconsistent at best and hypocritical at worst Edited Part since I posted just seconsd after Dan: Dan, no one celebrates the Pagan Samhain anymore?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Had the Life scout, as a Life Scout been in a position of responsibility for 6 months before he went AWOL? -
And I dont think anyone who celebrates Christmas necessarily wants to insult Christians. But I dont want tax money spent in either a public school or in a government building to celebrate any type of religious holiday as it violates the Constitution. Just because a relatively few people celebrate it as a religious holiday is no reason to support it through public funds
