  1. I know every analogy limps, but what to do with all those off the road guys?
  2. I know I am getting esoteric, but humor me. The word "laser tag" was removed (or phrase) but the phrase "Pointing any type of firearm ..." remains. So, if the laser pistol looks like a Phaser from Star Trek, it can be used, but a Luger looking pistol cannot. Or am I just a weinie?
  3. If you seek a simple life style, why take the time to remove the flag from the uniform? On the other hand, if you want to draw attention to yourself and how you feel and what you have done, this is a perfect way to do it, but be honest, you want a celebration of yourself pure and simple
  4. hester may be only a few things that is not a joke about a certain little town at the bottom of a certain little Great Lake. And did you notice all my player references were Bears? and I missed the greatest open field runner of them all, the Kansas Comet whose career was a short flash of brilliance ANd yes, this IS how threads get off track oh well
  5. SO because laser tag isnt metioned then its ok?, the pointing of the weapon thing doesnt count?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  6. Oh c'mon now, where did you read that? How can you say that without a reference? Am I on candid camera? or Punk'd?
  7. I am saying when you campare two people from different era's people can come up with any number of statisitcs to prove an opinion they already have and my first post had to many things that could be interrpreted differently. I will have to do better in the future BTW, I disagree with Hester being the better ball player, as a kick returner he is without question the best playing today, but he needs to upgrade his skills as a receiver, I recall a ball bouncing off his shoulder pad in a loss to the Giants I beleiev it was. THen again, the best Ball Player could have been Walter Payton, he plunged through the lines and gained yards multiple times although neither Payton nor Hester could tackle like Butkus ::bowing head:: Oh well, last year at this time I was contemplating the Bears as Super Bowl winners, now I wonder what it will take to get them back to playoff contention, let alone getting to the Superbowl BTW2, is this how threads get off track?
  8. Well this will certainly teach me a lesson. I wanted a thread comparing Ty Cobb and Pete Rose. The reason was to contrast it with the thread comparing deaths in the military between Jimmy Carter and George W Bush. I figured there would be all sorts of statistics which could be looked at various ways and people would present numbers based on what they initially beleived to be true. But, this got me thinking I wonder how many times we do this, read a thread and then post items that have nothing to do with the threads intention until we are so far off the subject, you wonder how did we get here? The problem is of course, I am not entirely blameless on this account. But, this got me thinking Who am I to be disappointed? I asked a question, I thought it was clear that the "who was the better player and why" was between Cobb and Rose but that is not the way the post was interpretted by posters. How many times is a thread started that goes a completey different direction that the one originally intended by the originator? Anyway, it does prove a point that was talked about a few years back, threads are like Forest Gump's feather, they drift where they will and control is pretty near impossible. Moderators can control content, but show their own bias based on their actions and in an attempt to be fair, some threads go on longer than they should (well I feel they should) but I am reluctant to close them because just because I dont like what is being said doesnt make it wrong, it just means I dont like it. BTW, I think Rose was a better player. Compare the fielders gloves of Cobbs era with the gloves of Rose's. Line drives snared by a shortstop and balls caught "snow cone style" in the outfield during Rose's era would have missed the gloves of Cobb's era by inches.
  9. Maybe I am outside the norm, but when I attend training, I DO want to know the information, but if the presenter stands there and reads word for word from the syllabus, I will be bored out of my skull. Sorry, I will be making lists of all the things I could have done during this time and what I need to do next and wonder why I havent done quite a few other things. Nothing kills learning like a drab teacher who shows no emotion. Now, I am in a Council that mandates training for all direct contact leaders, Committee Chairs and members so I have gone to a lot of training. Bad experiences do not keep me from attending training, but having an engaging presenter to me is not a bonus, it should be required.
  10. Spin off from WInter Camping Thread to not hijack it The Three Levels of Boy Scouts (taken from the Scout Handbook): New Scout Patrols Experienced Scout Patrols Venture Scout Patrols (not to be confused with Venturing which is a separate program entirely)
  11. "Can't say that any other youth organizations are that great at "standardization" either, eh?" let see, hear pretty near my neck of the woods is Williamsport, Pennsylvania and every year this community hosts an international organization, The Little League World Series. Teams from all over the country and world meet here and guess what? They all play three strikes and your out, four balls is a walk and three outs in a half inning. BTW, they all wear complete uniforms as well. AND, the adults who make all this possible are volunteers as well. No one is a paid little league coach, they get trained and apply the same standards. Then there is Pee Wee Football. The fields are the same length, width and goal posts the same. The uniforms are well uniform, Offisides is offisdes and pass interference is well based on a ref's judgement and I am not sure that is standardized anywhere, muchless the NFL. Pee Wee football is staffed by volunteers. So, when you say youth groups are not good at stanardization, which groups do you mean?
  12. Who was the better player and why?
  13. At varoius times I have suggested having a Accreditation program, staffed by volunteers, assuring that all BSA polcies and procedures are followed. When I suggested this in the COuncil I serve I was told that what commissioner's do, but alas they don't. Troops wouldnt have to be accredited, it would be their choice. Troops seeking accreditation would fund the program and provide support for it.
  14. Lisabob, you have provided an excellent description of the event, share it with the parents of the new scouts. Let them decide if their son is able to participate. I can see few things worse than welcomming new scouts in a Troop and telling them how happy you are they are part of your group and then immediately exclude them. Invite them contingent on the parents permission.
  15. SO we agree that there is no such thing as Venturing ROundtables? They are called Forums?
  16. First Class emphasis is about the Troops program, not the boys attendance, if he doesnt show up, he doesnt advance.
  17. Eagledad, I thought you would give me something hard to do: Memo to new scoutmaster: Your program should be such that a scout can earn First Class in his First Year
  18. "It needs to be marketed differently." Now that is something I can agree with. It may be time to kill off First Class Emphasis, not because it was a bad idea, but because it was so mangled beyond its intent that it may be better to start over.
  19. "Again right on the money, Barry. The emphasis is in the wrong place. A well run unit will make sure the advancement opportunities are available. It is up to the Scout to take advantage of them." AND this is not the case in a Troop that uses First Class emphasis?
  20. I took this topic out of Lisabob's thread. In a brilliant mass marketing move, the BSA changed the name of Venturing Rountables to Venturing Forums. Check VK34342, Venturing Monthly Program Forum. this is its description: Venturing Monthly Program Forum Replaces the Venturing Roundtable Guide. The Venturing Monthly Program Forum provides the information for the Venturing breakout session of a district roundtable. It is the manual for a Venturing roundtable commissioner and staff to help with planning and administering a full year of exciting forum meetings for Venturing crew adult and youth leaders. It contains sections on How-To, Activities/Games, and Program Features. If you Google Venturing Forum, you find some hits and I admit I was being a butthead when I made my comment about Venturing no longer having Roundtable meetings. Sometimes it gets frustrating keeping up with the BSA, currently the Venturing Leader Manual is VK34655E, please note that in 10 years we are on Version E, 5 rewrites of a 10 year old program, hard to keep up huh?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  21. I might point out that Venturing does not have Roundtable meetings
  22. So, we help all people at all times? Even those carrying off my neighbors goods? Here, let me help you get that stuff out of Bob's house, I know you aer stealing it, but I am helpful. We talk about mixed signals, having such a program is a huge mixed signal. What will stop drunk driving? Life sentences when you are caught first time would be a start. Too severe? OK, maybe it needs work, but there are ways to deal with a problem other than setting in place a safety net for those who choose to break the law. We are supposed to be campassionate, but how much money do I give the neighborhood heroin addict before I am enabling his state of being? How long do I help the crack whore take care of her ever expanding brood before I stop helping?
