Pappy I disagree with your thought that Nature would have us murder, rape, steal and all other manner of shennanigans. You have commented on studying Greek and Latin. What did the Ancients have to say about this topic? Is not the basis of western civilization founded in the Greek Dignity of Man, Rome's system of Laws and the Judeo-Christian work ethic? What was Athens idea of a pure man? Was he totally warlike? The Roman Citizen, what did he aspire to? Man is capable of all the evil that you describe, he is also capable of great art, thought and countless acts of self-sacrifice. Man's nobility and baseness both have equal opportunity to come to light

"There's that pesky Constitution we would have to deal with" yeah, Bummer man (said with impeccable Cheech Marin voice)

BSA councils attempt to defraud public for funds

So, anybody remember Godwin's Law" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law Maybe this should be part of the official Forum Rules?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Not that I would ever want to be labeled a Sadistic Sodomistic Necrophilyist (One who loves to beat dead horses)but, the ACLU still has no power to make anyone do anything. Again, The ACLU does not have the power to do anything. The ACLU brings topics to the attention of the court system. If you do not like the COURT decisions that are made, then its the COURT system that needs to be addressed. Chasing after the ACLU wastes time and effort that would be better served in either judicial reform or changing the laws that are interpreted by the COURT system. It is not the bogeymen of the ACLU that is the issue, its the judges that make the decisions that effect the BSA

Neither is being a registered voter (BTW, why are we listing what is not required in the BSA program?)

I love the argument of "We've never done it that way before" or something similar. If you follow that logic, nothing ever changes. A troop never expected POR's to actually be done. Then, someone says lets have the POR done according to the book. WOW! What a concept! Just because others did not do the right thing does not preclude you from doing the right thing. There may be organizational inertia to overcome, and it may not be easy, but thats why you get the big bucks

This does along with the thoughts engendered in the Thread, What has happened to Courtesy?. I know as a Roman Catholic, I would never wear a hat in church, any church. The Church that Charters the Troop I serve is Moravian. They do not require hats to be off in their sanctuary. During a Troop meeting, I was asked to help move a table off their altar as they were setting up for a wedding. As I walked into the sanctuary, I took off my hat, the person who asked me to help gave a quizzical look as if to ask why I removed it and I said "I'm Catholic" he smiled and said, "Yeah, that's right". We moved the table with two other members of the church, both sporting ball caps and I went back to the meeting, hat on after I got out of the sanctuary. Its a question of what is acceptable to the faith. If its the LDS tradition to have males remove head gear in their church, then having it be announced is good manners as not all might realize it. I understand about wearing a ball cap indoors is generally not proper, but then again I just said I was wearing one during the scout meeting. Someone should have told the gentelmen to take off their hats

BSA councils attempt to defraud public for funds

I would like to know how many cases the ACLU ever decided against Boy Scouts or their Chartering institutions. Wait a minute, I am too impatient to wait this one out. I will give the answer. How many Court Decisions have the ACLU made against the Boy Scouts? Answer, none, zero, zip, zilch, nada. All the ACLU can do is bring a situation to the attention of the COurt system, what happens from there is not the ACLU's "fault". We spend so much time railing against the ACLU when they are not the root cause of the issue. It is judicial decisions that are the issue. -
I understand the quandry Pack, I mean how do you find a Yankee that isn't already riddled with steroids already?

Pappy, you may wish to rethink your stand on what Merlyn wants, you said "Merlins modus operandi is not for fairness, but for the establishment of an anti-clerical state" No where in any of Merlyn's posts will you see this. He does not want public money used to help fund private organizations which is a far cry from establishing an anti-clerical state. -
What COllege do you go to again Hops?

That brilliant flash you just saw from the East was the light bulb going on in my head. The paper ballots remain as the paper trail. Ok, now I understand. Somedays I just should have stood in bed

And we know the results they read of the USB chip is what the people put in how?

Gentlemen, either PM each other or continue the discussion, but continued " I know you are but what am I " jab trading stops here. -
Gosh oh gee whiz there Lisabob, last I heard John McCain just about had the republican presidential nomination wrapped up, geez, if you can't keep up say so!
-
Do you remember Donald Segretti? Speaking of Dirty Tricks, he was the best
-
Again, its possible, its up to the scout and his unit
-
Lisa, What about a primary system that allows anyone who wants to grab a ballot for one party so a weaker candidate is the choice over the persons true party, and vice versa of course Hops, or anyone, you might want to look up why Primaries are structured the way they are, a lot is based on the 68 Democratic Convention. Do you remember/have you heard? Though your brother's bound and gagged And they've chained him to a chair Won't you please come to Chicago Just to sing

John-in -KC You are correct, I am going by what is the minimum requierd time in the Troop. Whether or not a Troop would schedule the events required to have a scout move to First Class in 4 weeks is up to them. THis also assumes that PORs are immediately assigned as the scout advances. I also said "get" Eagle, not earn Eagle but that discussion has been held. So, a scout earning Eagle in 2 1/2 years is very doable.

Davlafont, Its a matter of scale, when Wal-Mart decides to sell a shirt, it has a much larger market than does the BSA. With 301 million people in the US and I will say 150 million are males and half are either too young, old, or dont want to shop at Wal-Mart. That leaves 75 million who may want to buy the shirt. Compare that to BSA numbers, of just around a million to buy the khaki shirt (I could be off on the numbers, but still the numbers speak for themselves). I am not sure I would say the charge is as much a revenue stream as it is a "novelty" item that just doesnt sell a whole lot of units when compared to other clothing items.

Actually, the fastest you can get Eagle is 17 months.

Just a thought I know a family that is apparently predisposed to alcholism, nice people over all, they just cant hold their liquor. Should they be allowed to be drunk at scouting events? Why should we discriminate against one form of addiction (drugs) and not another (food)? I am well aware some people are more prone to weight gain, but are not others prone to other vices? We say be kind to the corpulent individual, why not is the same said to the victims of other unsavory genetic traits? Could it be because being stout is a calamity that was only an attribute of the rich and powerful as opposed to alcholism and drug addiction which cut across all of society's borders

Gentlemen, if you are going to go tit for tat, please do it with PM's. Although, Ed, I have to tell you again, I loved the Airplane reference! -
I understand this is a totally biased opinion, then again by definition all opinions are biased. When I think of the major candidates, I wonder about what they think about in bed just before they go to sleep. I can see Obama thinking how great a country it is that he can be this close to the presidency, and how great a role model he could be and what great things he could do as president. I can see McCain thinking how great it would be to be president, how his experience in war would come in handy and he would be able to lead this great country forward. I can see Huckabee thinking what this Country needs is a return to morals and I can't stop thinking that Hillary's last thought is she can't wait to be King.
