  1. The EWTN network is an alterntative for people who have no other option, I wonder if that is an option then?
  2. Gee Oak Tree, thats not what I intended. I think that if you join a club, I would think you would want to follow that clubs rules. If I join the Shriner's, I would think my fellow members would think it strange if I objected to wearing a funny hat. Thats all. If I join the Knights of Columbus, I should expect a bit of resistance if I want to wear a fur trade outfit to mass rather then the prescribed regalia Then again, do whatever it is that makes you feel good about yourself and call it scouting, as long as your council recharters you, you must be doing it right, eh?
  3. We sang to B-P last night at the troop meeting, Happy Birthday to you Happy Birthday to you Happy Birthday dear Lord Baden-Powell Happy Birthday to you And Olave too!!!(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  4. Don't we all? I think I look particularly fetching if not downright winsome in my shorts and knee socks
  5. I can appreicate you want to be proper in your approach to the uniform. At your scout store you will be able to find the postion patch of "Troop Committee", they wouldnt sell it if you couldnt wear it on the uniform(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
  6. If you wear a uniform to the troop meetings and ask the boys what the uniforms meas to them, you will be better received than if you never wear the uniform and then ask what the uniform means to them. Not that you can't, or that an adult has to wear an uniform to tak about it, it just seems a better way to approach the situation
  7. So, perhaps it would be better to say Scouting Values are closer to one Don Quixote's view of what a knight errant was. And when you think of it, we are all a little of Don, tilting at windmills, honoring the beautious Dulcinea gadding about the country side in search of the perfect program
  8. ::somewhere in Hades:: Hey, how did this ice get in here?
  9. "Says YOU Bob. But scouting by the book is NOT infallible." I have to ask Pappy, where else in life do you throw the book away? When doing taxes, do you throw the IRS taxbook out because its too hard to understand (it is for me I know). When on a campout with your troop and its hard to make mass on sunday, do you throw the religious requirements book to be a Catholic out the window? Where else in your life do you throw out the rules of an institution of which you are a member?
  10. See now Pack, back in 2000, I never saw McCain accused of any of that. Of course I live in Pennsylvania and our Primary is still aways off so you may have seen campaign tactics that were superfluous by the time the primary juggernaught got around to me. I may have thought differently about GW back then, then again, I would have had to have voted for Gore and he won Pennsylvania without my vote anyway
  11. didnt B-P propose to Juliette Gordon-Low and she turned him down?
  12. But Ed, by your own words numerous times you have pointed out that the unoform is not required, its only one of the eight methods. Now, where does it say that Adult Association is required?. A troop could form, the SPL emails the Scoutmaster with a plan for a patrol outing and the scoutmaster emails back the approval. The patrol members could never see the scoutmaster or know one exists. Or do you think that because the scoutmaster is an adult and they work with the unit that is what is meant by adult asssociation?
  13. I can just see myself at the next Eagle project asking the scouts to get me a pack of mulch. Gigabytes they get, pecks no so much
  14. Hold on there Gold Winger, you might be mistaken, weren't cavemen of the Homo erectus or Homo ergaster variety in which case this wouldnt be racism, rather its specism.
  15. Thanks a lot Scoutmomma, I came up with Huckabee as the person I most closely resemble, like that is going to happen. Oh well, how bad can it get in 4 years? Like football coaches, the president gets way to much credit when it goes well and too much heat when it goes bad. My fear is that republicans will be so discouraged that they will forget besides a president, this election is for 1/3 of the Senate and 100% of the House
  16. So, Hilary has lost ten primaries in a row, is it because Barack Obama is so good or are people voting against Hilary? What if Obama wins the nomination and runs against McCain. So, why was the first black American voted to be president? He wasnt a Clinton nor a republican. Great way to run a country. I would like Obama a lot more if I knew what he wanted to do other than "Change"
  17. Come to think of it, The Jungle Book is a rather manly book, isnt it?
  18. Well Pack, one reason why the switch from Julian to Gregorian was made, the chants are so much cooler...
  19. I understand Gold WInger, last summer Olympics I watched it seemed moe than half of the swim team was asthmatic, it does seem like there are moer alleries than ever. I dont know why. I do know I would rather go without than wish I did
  20. I think it depends on a lot of factors, as scouters I can understand that we need to be aware of our health issues. As a diabetic I dont load up on bug juice or delve deeply into the Krispy Kremes. I am not so sure I would expect the same from all scouts. There may be the scouts who understand their limitations, but I dont think you can broaden that out to all scouts. I can see a 11 year old cross over who so badly wants to fit in that when he says he is allergic to peanut butter, he allows others to talk him into "just a bite" of a peanut butter sandwich. Now, as you walk from the wake, you can take comfort in knowing your troop wont have to worry about that anymore.
  21. Awhile back when I was District Advancement Chair, I had a erquest from the District Chair for this information. How old the scouts were when they reached Eagle. I had access to the Eagle Applications and found I could calculate the months passed from birth to Board of Review, which became my target. The first time I calculated the average age I came up with 18.1 years old was the average age of a scout in the District when the Board of Review was held. I did this for 3 years after, the average never went below 17.5 years old.
  22. I understand Lisabob, reminds of the time a friend of mine got kicked out of the local Anarchy club, seems he wouldnt follow the rules...
  23. personally I ascribe to "nattering nabob of negativity"
  24. I think having Charles the Hammer as a Cub Scout Icon is a great idea, it may not play well in mostly muslim communities Modeling the behavior of Saints and Martyrs could get some traction unless the Pack is mostly Jewish in which case I think the impact would be diminished. Way back in the mid 60's when I was the first boy in my class to know the latin responses, I got to be the first of my class to serve Mass. Of course, it was 6:30am mass and I had to walk to church and back home just to walk back when it was time for school and attend mas and watch Tom, the second boy in our class to learn his latin serve and be fawned over as he was the "first" of our class to be seen serving but I digress. I remember being a member of "The Knights of the Altar", the Altar boy society. We got one picnic a year while school was in session and a trip to Comiskey Park, the old Comiskey Park at that, with Ron Hansen playing third and Tommy Macraw at second. Perhaps a Knights of the Altar Chapter would do well at your school Pappy. As Altar servers can now be female, the program can be coed as well. Perhaps a group called the "Sons of Liberty" would be a great idea to teach the history of the nation. A funny aside, in the community where I live there is high school called "Liberty High School", we had a patrol composd of scouts who went to that High School who has as their patrol name, "The Sons of Liberty". They did quite well in Camporees and Klondikes for a few years taking 2nds and Firsts. I think introducing Living History is a great idea. You could have a Venturing Crew with renacting History as its focus, it would be great
  25. I was going to put this in the Cub Scout section but I thought it might do better here. I didnt want to hijack the parent thread, but Pappy seemed to question where the elements of Cub Scouting came from. Does anyone care to explain why Akela and Baloo are features of the Cub Scout program?
