The old plumper is better argument. My mother, of Polish extraction from Chicago, often spoke of the Ladies in her Parish growing up who would brag how large they were, because it took a lot of money to buy the food that made it so. Their weight was a reflection of their husbands success. Their husbands ate well as well, right up to the point where the MI ended it all... Then again, getting to an age where coronary artery disease was a concern was never an issue in rural feudal Poland

What does the Public expect of Scouts?
OldGreyEagle replied to CalicoPenn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Could it be that the behavior that is being rewarded is the behavior of the scouts relative to other groups of youth the same age and not to other Scout Troops? The asking for donations? That I certainly can identify with. As a member of the District Advancment Committee involved in the Eagle process, so any of the youth express the intent of asking for discounts at the local lumber and hardware stores to the point I get embarrassed when I go in the stores to know how many times they get hit for donations/discounts. And just about each scout thinks he is being original or deserves the discount. That I can see is an issue -

Thank you Pack, I think,... I would just think we should congratulate this fine scoutmaster for the time and energy he gives to the youth and respect his ability to present the program as he sees fit. Is that not what we all seek?

Apparently a lot was missed. I was expressing anger at BOTH sides for being shrill and promising Doom and Gloom if either side wins That both sides missed what I was trying to say either means no one can read or I need to be better at explaining myself I blame me

Lisabob, did you read my original post? I must have confused you with somehow So, I have Eagle732 mad at me for taking shots at the Republicans and you for shots at Democrats, I must be doing OK if both side hate me and since when is hyperbole not a tool I can use?

What do we (Scouters) expect from Eagle Scouts.
OldGreyEagle replied to Sentinel947's topic in Advancement Resources
I expect an Eagle to know his skills, to be able to stand up for himself and defend what he thinks is right. It is called charactor If somehow, someway, a stumbling black is placed in his way that is beyond those requirments, then I have more respect for the lad who says no, you cant do this even if you are older and in a position of authority, that is not right and his fights it within the system. Its what we tell each other all the time -
So, who gets to determine what is or is not art?

The complete line reads "So now the Democrats rip the Republicans for drawing breath. The Repulicans are dirty awful people with no redeeming value at all." I apologize if you thought that Republicans were dirty awful people was a characterization that I held. I do not, I was inferring that this the thinking of Democrats Sorry to have confused you

At what point will the purveyers of hate and shrillness inure the populace? From about the begining when Obama said he would run for the Presidency the Right Wing stood as a group and screamed what a low down racist classist fiend he was and much worse. I think they screamed for so long and so loud, people ignored them. Everything a person does is not grounds for intense scruitiny detailing how this sort of behavior is guaranteed to bring down western civilization. I was told Obama wanted my guns and the first thing he would do as president is outlaw guns and he would be walking down the street taking away my guns. Well, I still have mine and I have not heard much from him on the topic. So now the Democrats rip the Republicans for drawing breath. The Repulicans are dirty awful people with no redeeming value at all. In a year that promises to host a very close election, at what point d they start talking about what the plan is? Not how bad someone else it, but what they plan to do? I have no doubt the registered Democratrs and Republicans will vote their party way. But the best tactic to convince the independed voter is to derise the opponent and not present their own plan? Incredible

Scouting changes in your lifetime?
OldGreyEagle replied to Oldscout448's topic in Open Discussion - Program
"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers. Socrates I wonder if its true the older you get the softer the new generation is, seems to be a historical thing -
Eagle Awards Through Apeeals
OldGreyEagle replied to SeattlePioneer's topic in Advancement Resources
So it comes down to a difference in semantics of earning Eagle versus metting the requirments for Eagle? -

Do you have a Facebook page, twitter account, etc If I reviewed them, would I know you are a scout? -

American Football, Baseball and American Politics
OldGreyEagle replied to Eamonn's topic in Issues & Politics
First everyone hates when they are pigeonholed and tell people they are individuals, yets as much as we all want to be addressed as individuals, we have no problem lumping opponents into a single group. Until Recently I had never heard of Todd Akin but now I know he said some pretty stupid things. Almost as fast as he said them, I saw his comments on Facebook that would lead you to beleive that Akin was a spokesman for the Republican party. He is not. Many Republicans decried his comments and yes, still, I hear and see comments about how this proves the Republcan attitide towards women. OK, and Representative Wiener, remember him? The guy who was sexting his genitalia to anyone he could? Is he the poster boy for Democratic Social Networking? Both sides will have their Gaffes, both sides have nut jobs. When we break down to "At least my guy doesnt suck as bad as yours" I am at a loss I somehow ended up with a Republican questionairre about theur platform. I wrote accoss the top of it I was not Republican and proud to be Independent and there really is not that much different between the two parties. Both pretty much are trash -
It's not like Camp School has a curriculum titled "Scout Skills" they train Directors of SHooting Sports, Camp COmmissioners, Water Front Director, SHooting Sports Directors and then Scout Craft. I think what is being talked about would be in the courses for Scout Craft Directors but space could be an issue. Where do we find people with these skill and the ability to teach them. They are growing scarce

We should probably also ask why the GSUSA does not allow boys to be members a well,

What a trove of information this is, the Battle of Agincourt is, of course, the setting of one of William Shakespeare's best soliloquy found in King Henry V "... We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,..." As far as the rigid digit goes, in French class we had a three word poem Voila la doigt what can I say, in 1970 in a prepatory seminary, it killed

Back when the Venturing Crew was just getting started we had a heck of a time getting the youth to actually be self-lead. The fact all of the boys were Eagle Scouts just frustrated me as they didnt seem inclined to do very much or plan or much of anything. We had a few young ladies in the group who were up to the task and did quite a bit, one is currently a Fieled Director in the Cradle of Liberty Council (it hurts so when they turn to the Dark Side). At one meeting, in recognition of the work these ladies did, organizing a COuncil Wide Crew Rendezvous and starting the Venturing Leaders group, I gave the two the Sacajawea award. It was a Sacajawea dollar coin with a hole drilled in it on a leather thong to go around the neck. Both wore them for quite awhile. I called it the Sacajawea because the girls showed the boys how it's done. Not sure the boys ever got the significance of the name, the young ladies certainly did

I had thought some term limits tuck in some states but I have been wrong before

Then why do we have a term limit on being President and some states limit terms of Senators and Congress?

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned . . .
OldGreyEagle replied to acco40's topic in Issues & Politics
acco40, I was waiting to see if anyone would mention this, but you did not sin at all. It was your intention to do good and by an error not of your will, the erasure was done. To sin you have to know what you are doing is wrong and then by your own free will accept what you are doing is wrong and then go ahead and do it anyway. An accident is not a sin, therefore I can't even offer absolution as to do so would imply guilt and in this situation, you are guilt free, in others? You are on your on -
Boy Scout leader says he was forced out because he is gay
OldGreyEagle replied to Polaris's topic in Issues & Politics
And of course Orthodox Judaism and Islam embrace Homosexuality without reservation -
The best part is, I think most of who FScouter mentions was all the same guy

Ah, the old asterisk besides the name convention, well,it almost worked for MLB a very long time ago I am one of the first Moderators, originally it was myself and hop_scout. Then we added a few select more. I have to say my standards have shifted over the years to what bothers enough to delete or edit a post. Obviously Spam or posts that are ads get deleted. I don't spend much time on other forums, so I don't know what passes as good or bad behavior. I used to think it my role to call people out who were acting in what I would term a 'Butthead" fashion until I thought thats just me. Threads are like Forest Gump's feather, they drift to wherever they go and thats the way it probably should be as long as language is not an issue. Some of the most damning action we as moderators can do is not change or alter a post, and just leave it, allowing others to jusge for themselves the merits of the postor. If you want fun, try looking up the posts of WHEELER, the guy who prompted the site for having moderators in the first place. He thought World War I was caused by the assasination of Prince Ferdinand in Serbia. Which is about all you need to know about him and that he was very prolific. Some of my more uncomfortable moments in Scouting have come from private messages due to my status as a moderator but I have tried to use them as an educational opportunity even if its to prove there is no pleasing some people
