Its always fun when you get told to ignore what's printed. Then again this is where the concept of trust comes in, and how to discuss this topic with someone not privy to these posts. Perhaps its time to take the Star Federation approach and not worry about interpersonal relationships that are legal.

District Award of Merit
OldGreyEagle replied to d.a.m.'s topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Just as an aside, in the District I serve, the DAMs are announced prior to the event. The District got tired of half or more of the DAM and District Fellowship award recipients not being present. The year I was to receive my DAM I was being a Range Master at a multi-council Venturing event. I was asked several times if I was going to the Disitrct Dinner and I replied I had committed to being Range Master and couldnt go, so much for taking a hint. Didn't know of the situation until the following Troop meeting on Thursday when I was congratulated. The Council did the same thing with the Silver Beaver and the Council Dinner, they announce the recipients to have all who want to honor them be present. Different ways of doing things, -
Beavah, Just to be clear, this is item 10 from the Boy Scouts of America Youth Protection Guidelines for Adult Venturing Leaders Training Guide 10. The roles of volunteer adult leaders in the Venturing program require that clear boundaries be established between adult leaders and youth members. For this reason, fraternization the formation of peer-based, social relationships between adult and youth members is not permitted. This prohibition extends to Venturing crewmembers who register as adults after their twenty-first birthday. So, its ok to ignore this point? I am not sure what you meant in your post

Pack, when you say Hell is a myth, are you talking about a geographical place or the concept?

I know I will sound a little harsh here, but I warned you: My first impression is that these are great positions for people who want to wear gold tabs. I don't see how these positions will change the attitudes of Council Commissioners, either a Council Commissioner has a firm grasp on what needs to be done or they do not and having a big shot from the Region or Area come in to straighten him out is not a thought I want to contemplate. Now, all the Council Commissioners I have known have been pretty forthright guys who didnt need anyone to tell them their jobs, then again, my experience is a tiny part of the BSA experience so maybe its needed, I just dont see how adding to the upper echelon of scouting helps units

What would you think of an Eagle never getting a COH?
OldGreyEagle replied to Joni4TA's topic in Advancement Resources
Gee Beavah, I am not sure I could ever face the proud parents of a newly minted Eagle scout and tell them that they need to rein in their plans for the Eagle Court of Honor because it may make other scouts feel "bad". I think it best for Troops to follow or establish whatever tradition they want Of course, my sons Eagle Court of Honor was a blow-out, with his Epispadias and surgical operations and dyslexia and ADHD I wasnt sure if he was going to make it and he did. It was a Challenege ceremony executed so well that the first speaker was nearly tackled by an ASM who never seen the ceremony before. -
with Regional Jamborees, more scouts could attend and with todays technology there is no reason the shows couldnt be done simoultaneously and have images from all the sited shown at the other sites.

Sorry, Charles Lamb was the English writer and friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Darrell Lambert was the Atheist. Disney has the cartoon "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" so whenever I hear/see Lambert, I think sheep and the name Charles Lamb comes up. I dont expect you to follow, if you are confused, imagine what livng in this brain does for you...
-
Pack, Charles Lamb, I beleive, that is his name, is an Atheist who is no longer in scouting because he didnt think you really had to beleive in a higher power to be in scouting. His eagle board of review never questioned it and he thought it was fine. I beleive that reverence has a part in a scouts life and a question about his religious beliefs is part of an EBOR.
-
I do not think asking an Eagle Scout candidate how reverence is part of his life is intrusive. I wouldn't blink at a member of the EBOR asking how a scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful. etc. I don't know why Reverent would draw a pass
-
I cant think of a prouder new scout who can sit down with either the Patrol Guide or Instructor or adult leader and run through the requirements and be told you know your stuff. If he doesnt know them then he learns that he has to know his stuff to get requirments signed off in Boy Scouts I call it win win

New requirements at TF, 2C, and 1C
OldGreyEagle replied to clydesdale115's topic in Advancement Resources
This is taken from the BSA Publication Advancement Committee Guide, Policies and Procedures 33088Econcerning Scoutmaster Conferences: Scoutmaster Conferences. One of the most enjoyable experiences of being a Scoutmaster is the opportunity for a Scout and his leader to sit down and visit together. In large troops, Scoutmasters occasionally assign this responsibility to assistant Scoutmasters or members of the troop committee; but this is unfortunate, because most Scoutmasters feel that this is truly the opportunity to get to know the Scout and help him chart his course in life. A good conference should be unhurried. It helps the Scout evaluate his accomplishments and to set new goals with his Scoutmaster. This can be accomplished at a troop meeting, camping trip, or in the Scout's home. Goal setting by the Scout makes it possible for the Scoutmaster to help the Scout with his weaknesses and encourage him to use his strengths. The Scout (joining) conference is probably one of the most important associations a Scout will have in his Scouting career. It is at this conference that the Scoutmaster illustrates to him the adult-youth relationship that is unique to Scouting. All through the ranks, it is rewarding for the Scoutmaster to observe the Scout grow in responsibility and maturity. It is through this association and example that a young man grows and matures, and the Scoutmaster conference accomplishes that aim. (See Scoutmaster Handbook, chapter 8.) Nothing is said about a review of past requirements. The topic of bullying is certainly a topic worthy of discussion in a scoutmaster conference, not as a way to "pass" the requirements, but as a discussion point to get the youths views and input(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
It was either this link or wikipedia http://www.westtexasscoutinghistory.net/jamboree.html anyway, Moraine State Park in PA or Valley Forge. Not sure if the numbers today are too big for the sites. The again, if its in Valley Forge I could leave the house at 6am for an 8am opening ceremony

If you ain't a Bear, you are nothing but a meal! Some Animals are herbivores, they eat only plants (Antelopes, Buffaloes) Some Animals are carnivores, they eat only meat (Fox) Then there are the Bears, we are Omnivores, we eat anything Da Minsi Bears "Oh, Bother" -
OK Ed, I realize this is picking at nits, but as a non-profit organization, the BSA can't have profits, they can however, have revenue in excess of expenses. The CFO of the last hospital I worked for taught me that. Of course, that was when the hospital was being sued by the local school district challenging its tax exempt status.

over 40,000 at philmont traveling in the space of a few days? Now that's what is known as a logistical nightmare. Central location with transportation hubs nearby.

So, are you in Florida? dont say where, just yes or no

Pappy, as soon as I figure out what you said, I am sure I will have a reply Pack, I beleive in Demons/Devils/Satan what have you I beleive that angels exist and therefore I beleive devils/demons/whatever also exists. Good is always balanced by Evil. Now, what was it that McCoy said about good and evil fighting?

Ah yes, the letter of the law was broken by the woman. Now, as to the nieghborlyness of the neighbor? What if the complaint was made from one of the attendees of the gathering who lives in another town? What if the complaint was made from someone who over heard the situation from the attendee out of town. Does that make the woman breaking the law better or worse? Is the law any less broken depending on who complains about it? If we are proud to be a nation that is ruled by Laws (and I think we are) then Laws have to apply to everyone or they are meaningless Blaming Public Schools for what they do or dont do as a whole is rather silly. Its not like all Elementary and Middle School and High Principals take a pledge to harass the BSA. I find it hard to beleive that there are no Catholic, Jewish, Baptist etc Public School Principals who would love to allow the BSA access to their school but realize to do so would mean the KKK and related groups would have the same access. I think it may be time to stop demonizing (there you go Pack, a demon reference)Public Schools as the source of our ills. Its nice to blame people, but it doesnt solve the problem, perhaps we should be as energetic solving problems as we are finding blame The BSA said it was a religious organization and we have to live with it.

Egad Ed, you may be agreeing with Merlyn but I will let him make that call... Pappy I have a question for you I live in a pretty mundane residential section of town. Pretty much a quiet neighborhood. A couple houses down the street is a real nice couple, He works second shift so the wife runs a second shift day care center. Kids go there after school and stay until a parent picks them up or during the summer they start arriving at 3pm and stay until around 11pm or so. From what I understand the business has been going strong for over 10 years. Then one night, their next door neighbor had a gathering during a school night and the resulting parked cars made it difficult for the parents to get their youth. The next day the wife mentioned about the inconvinence to the neighbor. Well, the neighbor had a melt down, marched in and called the police to report an unlawful business being operated in an area zoned residential and it was a day care to boot without a Day Care operating license. The village shut down the Day Care in a heart beat. I have a question, who is at fault?
