The Roman Catholic Church is the direct descendent of Jesus Christ on Earth. The pope is the successor of Peter, the Apostle whom Jesus appointed as the first pope, " and on this rock I will build my church". Each pope, each Bishop and priest can trace the Bishop who consecrated them as a priest back to peter, or thats the theory. If a priest is not in that succession they are not priests, hence the Roman Catholic assertion other priests are really priests, there is no way to check on succession. Now, you may not agree and that's up to you, but this is the reasoning. Why do people change parties? Times change and peoples goal change and organizations change. Didnt Bill and Hillary start life off working on Campaigns for Republicans? I am not sure I should sign up a support a party that is liable to go off in a direction I find repulsive, being an independent is as American as you can get, then again, being an independent may color my perception of things

I deleted the win all you can thread started by goofy, he got his answer and more than a few people PM'ed me saying that some of the posts were exposing to much of that element of wood badge and it should be removed, so I did

I do not find merlyn's agenda to be warped, he wants the rules applied uniformly to everyone, and that means everyone. I do not beleive many of the things he does or understand many of the things he says, but that of itself does not make it warped, which is slightly inflammatory.

Back from Goose Pond Scout reservation's for the NEPA's first week end of Powderhorn. Finally located Green Bar Bill's signature on the wall of the Dining Hall. Got to Canoe, Kayak and "sail" (more or less)on the pond. All in all a pretty good week end and look to the second week end in two weeks. Anyone else attend?

Actually the reason you see more mega-practices than single practioners is based on money alright. More money for the physicians, a physcian office can do the same test and get more money for it than a hospital doing the same test and the hospital's overhead is a tad more. The mega-practice can look and see if you are insured and take you over to their x-ray machine to get that chest film, if you are a self-pay or Medicare, or other undesirable, you get a script and go to the hospital for the film. The mega-practices may also have "surgi centers" which do procedures that a hospital could do on the insured and steer the uninsured to the hospitals. Then when the hospitals have financial difficulties the physicians claim the hospital was mis-managed. Of course the physcians skimming the cream has nothing to do with it. Then, to get on track, how can any president tell independent bussiness people (Physicians) who they will or wont care for? Provide health care to everyone who needs it? Do we have or want the resources to do so?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Heck, Medicare feeds my family. I am a Medicare compliance Consultant and help hospitals correctly report the care they provided for proper reimbursement. Reimbursement BTW which does not cover the actual cost of most procedures, but thats another topic. No, I am not opposed to the programs in general. However, I do disagree with their administration. I would like to think there is an account out there with OldGreyEagle as its title and its all the money I ever put in it sitting there waiting for me. Alas, all the money I have put in has already been paid out to others and there is a genuine threat that when my time comes, there will not be any left for me, and others of the same generation. Medicaid in theory is a great program, the state pays health care costs for the poor (economically disadvantged) but in most states it means the Emergency Room becomes the family physician for many while clogging up the system with illnesses which would better be served in a physician office but since physicians as independent bussiness can refuse to accept Medicaid or Medicare patrients they congragate in the Emergency Room and the hospital does not recover near the cost of the visit. The system generally referred to as welfare is a great idea, but when a culture develops that encourages people to do nothing and receive the benefits of working then that is a problem. Unfortunately I dont have a solution but I still know a broken system when I see it.

On a separte note, wasnt Biden the guy who had to drop out of a presidential primary race a few elections back because of plaugerism? Is that forgotten now or was it ever true? And if it was true, why did he have to quit if now years later its ok? it may never have been true, I remember he did drop from the race once the plaugerism accusation was made

it may be the evolution of words. I think the term "Socialism" has taken on the meaning that the government should take on all of society's ills and solve them. Hence the Welfare system, Social Security (even has the word "Social" in it), Medicare, Medicaid and Food stamps. I guess a lot on the list would fall under welfare, but I wanted to list the major examples. Perhaps the government should have some interest in the welfare of its citizens, but some states regard children as property of the state and its their right to remove them from parents for various reasons. I beleive it was Obama who said the government was doing enough to curb teen age pregnancy, I didnt know that was one of their responsibilities. I thought that was the parents job, then the community. When you beleive that the government should fix societies ills, I can see why people would call that socialism, even if the term is mis used

"To Kill a Mockingbird"? well, I guess you can't go wrong with a movie with a main charactor referred to as "Scout" -
The best part of the pool noodle sword fight would be to engage a scout in a duel and then say the immortal words, " I know something you don't know", and then the answer to the inevitable "what?", " I am not left handed" whereupon you switch the sword to the right hand. Of course you have to have it in your left hand to start

You don't have to have a uniform to be a scout, but to attend various functions is may be required, and that is because it is the scouts option to go. No one is required to go on the activities where a uniform is required. I know it doesnt sound logical at first but the reasoning is the BSA would not want a youth who wants to be a member of a program to be shut out of that program because the uniform was an issue. The above is providing all membership requirements were met of course

I am not sure how a Dungeons and Dragons reference helps, but hey, its your post. Can we focus on the topic at hand and not BobWhites style? I dont always appreciate how he puts things but then there are a lot of people on the forum whose style I dont always appreciate. The topic at hand is how to help Lynn07

What, you beleived I got a date by wearing the red beret? yes, you had to wear them right and not look like a french school girl. I have always thought a shade darker and they could have been the raspberry beret, you know, the kind you find in the five and dime? (what is a Five and Dime? would any kid or parent know for that matter? )(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Movies for Citizenship in The Community
OldGreyEagle replied to ASM915's topic in Advancement Resources
if you are talking about movies that feature a community and how people fit into the community, The Great Escape" and "Kelly's Heroes" are not bad. Odds are the kids have never seen them -
"One reason GSUSA loses membership is that its National Staff is completely divorced from its local volunteers in terms of values and vision" Sound like any other youth volunteer organization you know of?
-
Ok, eagletrek, I let your first disparagement of the red beret go by, however, I loved the red berets, they were the coolest thing going in scouting while they lasted. I even had a few girls tell me how good it looked on me and one dated me afterwards, perhaps thats why I have such regard for it. The red berets were cool, long live their legacy!!!

Could a Non-Sea Scout Venturer earn a Sea Scout Bronze?
-
But if the reason was because its part of the BSA, why do you have to first be a First Class Scout before you become a Venturer to continue to Eagle. A boy joining at 15 who has never been a scout cannot earn Eagle in a Crew while a boy who is 15 may earn Eagle if he became a Venturer when he was at least first class. And the Eagles may wear the eagle rank on their Venturing Uniform. Doesnt make sense. Beavah, a Venturer "could" earn the Trust, Quest, Ranger, And Out Door, Sports, Arts and Hobbies, Relious Life and Sea Scout Bronzes and why is that wrong if the youth has ecletic tastes? At least its all in the same program

So is BobWhite correct when he says that the scout must actively serve in the position and that merely occupying the position is not enough? I ask because it seems like we have spent a lot of time saying that if a scout does nothing and is not told to improve performance and he reaches 6 months then the time counts. I know a lot of people disagree but I am talking about that. If the scout does nothing for 6 months and is not told by the troop adults that he is not doing his job does he complete the 6 months POR? I am not saying should he or what is your opinion, but what is the BSA position, does anybody know?
-
Actually Ffred, I think differences between the GSUSA and BSA would be better since both involve American youth. The GSUSA has changed its membership requirements, how are they doing?
-
This is what BobWhite posted regarding serving actively and I want to be sure I understand and didnt want to disrupt the parent thread" "In my conversations with members of the National Advancement committee and with the information in the Boy Scout Handbook, this is not the case. The requirement clearly states "serve actively" not "hold an office". The Scout is expected to particpate in the responsibilities of the office. Where units get in trouble is when they fail to train scouts in those responsibilities or do not help the scouts set measuable goals. But if the scout accepts a role and then does not particpate in that role to activiely serve then the requirement is not met. What the BSA does not allow is for the troop to set attendance requirements. The purpose of the requirement is to develop leadership not to force attendance." Now, I understood that if a scout is placed in the position of respomsibility and nothing is expected of him,and is given no guidance, at the end of 6 months, he will have fullfilled his 6 month obligation. So, if a Life scout is on the books as a Quartermaster and does nothing Quartermasterly for 6 months, and then a year later his scoutmaster can tell him that since during his stint as Quartermaster he did nothing, that wouldnt count for an Eagle POR because he wasnt active participating as a Quartermaster. Do I have this correct?

See, I dont know why we would want to curb paper use. Paper is made from trees cut from Pulp farms. Paper does not come from the timbering of old growth forests, it comes from tree farms where the trees are planted, pruned and developed to become paper, much as corn, tomatoes, potatoes etc are farmed. Then once the trees are harvested, they are transported to mills, the paper is made and then transported to the printer. To eliminate paper means we put the forester out of work, the truck driver taking the wood to the mills, the millworkers, the truckers that take the paper to the printer and then the print shop employees and subsequent distribution workers. To eliminate paper means to put all these people out of work and I dont want to do that. If paper production required that old growth trees be harvested, I woud agree but the paper industry is reusing land to grow trees just as we grown our food(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -

Gee, what does that say about the Scoutmaster of the Troop I serve who is also the Council Training Committee Chair?
