I found the following on the BSA website "Paying your own way. This is a fundamental principle of the Boy Scouts of America. It is one of the reasons why no solicitations (requests for contributions from individuals or the community) are permitted by Cub Scout packs" http://www.scouting.org/cubscouts/resources/packbudget.aspx Now, this does say specifically "Cub Packs" but does anyone want to argue that the rules for a Troop, Ship, Crew, etc would be different?

Adult Leader age requirements
OldGreyEagle replied to Crazy_TP_Lady's topic in Open Discussion - Program
OK, so this is for the Council National Jamboree Contingent? The qualifications for the 3rf Assistnat Scoutmaster are: Third Assistant Scoutmaster Be at least 18 years of age (but not yet 21) by September 1, 2010. Have served actively in a troop leadership position. Complete the appropriate leader specific training. Have participated in the prejamboree training experience. Have filed a Personal Health and Medical Record, Class 3, No. 67-34412, before the prejamboree training with the council jamboree committee. Complete the 60-minute Youth Protection training. Be approved by the local council. Be able to serve as a role model of physical fitness. http://www.bsajamboree.org/register-scoutmaster.html many Councils use recently aged out Eagle scouts to serve as role models for the boys going to the Jamboree. The National qualifications does not mention sex as a qualification, but the Council gets to choose whom they want. Have you considered working as staff? Edited part, scoutnut got in before me,(This message has been edited by OldGreyeagle) -
Most of the time the patrols stay together, or the nucleus does, other times youth find that they arent so near as compatible with others as they thought they would be. Its done once a year. They have a chance to change, or stay together, its their choice
-
When we re-align, the PLC determines the number of scouts allowed per patrol, usually around 10. Then the meeting room is broken up into sections, A, B, C patrol area. Then the youth gather with the the youth they want to be with. They select a name, a yell and design a flag. If youth are not present, they may have a friend claim them and put them in their patrol. Then there is the stealth patrol that gets the youth not likely to show up much and we move on

boy, is my face red, and not from sunburn. I meant to say "properly approved by the scoutmaster of course" and it came out "probably approved by the scoutmaster of course". Dang, I am not sure why the BSA is afraid of a group of 17-20 year olds out without adult supervision but has no problem with 12-15 year olds out without supervision. I'll have to contact National to get a ruling

Wood Badge beads for NYLT staff
OldGreyEagle replied to emb021's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I contacted National last week, in what way do you mean? -
Nike, I see the issue you are pointing out, but I also understand what the others are saying. If the scout is following the Scouting rules, he is going to the Merit badge counselors house with a buddy. He never goes alone, there isnt a reason to not contact the counselor themselves.

were you at the recent NEPA Powder Horn? -
Ay-yah Just where from Down East do you reside?

So what we are saying is a Boy Scout Troop can have a patrol of 12-17 year old boys out on a campout, probably approved by the scoutmaster of course without adults but an all male Venturing Crew comprised of 14-20 year olds need two adults. Sea Scout or otherwise.

Wood Badge beads for NYLT staff
OldGreyEagle replied to emb021's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I think what is being expressed is a dismay at how something that was regarded in a certain light is now being changed. Wood Badge beads "used" to be earned in the context of the Wood Badge program and only the Wood Badge program and it distresses some when NYLT staff may also get what was up to this point something reserved for Wood Badge Staff. I liken this to my reaction to the seemingly proliferation of knots lately. I can't say I like having the NESA Lifetime knot available, but I also know there isnt much I can do about it but that doesnt mean I can't express an opinion on it as well. Back in the early 60's quite a few of the members of my Parish didnt like that the Mass was to be said the "vulgate" for us, English. They preferred the Latin Mass. Didnt matter that no one knew Latin, it was what they knew and didnt want to change. Did that make them "bad" catholics? No, it meant they needed time and space to express themselves. Did they have to like it and shup up about it? No, they were free to express themselves. Did they have to learn to live with it? Sure did and we will learn to live with NYLT staffer who qualify getting Wood badge beads as well. Doesnt mean we have to suffer in silence though either -

Honor and Awards (pencil-whipped badges rant)
OldGreyEagle replied to Beavah's topic in Advancement Resources
Oh Beavah you made me drop arms with GoldWinger and I was right in the midst of a chorus you posted "FCFY and camps and such have probably exacerbated that problem by puttin' a time limit on things, and not givin' folks a sense that they should take as much time as necessary to learn." Remember what Bob White posted on this subject: "What people who talk about FCFY are usually refering to is First Class Emphasis. This is not an advancement program for youth either. It is a planning tool for adult leaders, to focus them on meetings and activities that teach, practice and apply the skills that scouts would need to learn to achieve First Class rank during a 12 to 14 month period. The fact that there is a time frame does not mean it is rushed or that scouts should be advanced whether they have learned the skills or not. It just gives the leader an idea of how long it usually takes to be apble to learn, practice and apply these skills if you have an organized, and planned program." So FCFY is about elements of a program that should be presented, it does not establish a time limit and should not be represented as much. Whether it takes a scout 30 days to go from Scout to First Class or 6 years, they still have to meet the requirements and the BSA won't be there to sign the books, the Troop will have to manage that -
As I have commented, I am close to Treasure Island but not in the Cradle of Liberty Council. I have heard a lot recently about Treasure Island. I have a few questions, Is CoL talking about closing the Camp on Treasure Island for one season or forever? Is CoL talking about selling the property? Is Col talking about closing the Camp and then allowing camping in TI as a primative site? I have heard all three and other versions since Friday

The Troop I serve will do a flag retirement now and then according to the method I explained. I am always careful to point out that we are retiring, not burning the flag. Semantics yes, and least I be termed antisemantical, I dont want the talk up and down the lockers in the school hall on Monday that Tommy's Troop burned American Flags over the week end, retiring the flags is so much better.
-
Did I mention it took four people to do it? Each had a corner and about 6 feet of cord, that way the flag could be raised up by the updraft before bringing it back and the holders didnt get singed
-
the troop of my youth used to do quite a few flag retirements, the four corners would have a cord tied to them and then the flag would be brought over the flames, the fabric would catch the updraft of the flames and be pushed up, the four cord holders would slowly lower the flag towards the flames, usually about 1-2 inches from the flames, the flag would almost glow, and then burst into flmes, having never touched the ground, the embers or the flames. Done at night, its quite dramatic. Always thought that was the best way, but then with dignity and respect is the requirement that matters, everything else is up to you
