This is what the Boy Scout Handbook says about Scout Spirit Defined p 47 Scout Spirit refers to the effort you make to live up to the ideals of Scouting. The Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan serve as everyday guidelines for a good life. Tenderfoot, Requirement #13 p60 discuss scout spirit with your scoutmaster and with older boy scouts in your troop. Ask them for examples of how you can demonstrate Scout Spirit . You will likely hear examples of the Scout Oath and Law as ways to show your Scout spirit Second Class Requirement #9 p108 Most requirements for Scout ranks can be measured by other people. When you set out to swim 50 feet for the Second Class swimming requirement, anyone can see that you have covered the distance. How well you live the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your life, though is something for you to judge. You know when you are being kind, when you are helpful and a good friend. You know when you are trustworthy. and reverent. You alone know how you act when no one is around to witness what you do. Do the best you can to live each day by the Scout Oath and Law. You might look back on some of the decisions you've made and wish you had acted differently, but you can learn from those moments and promise yourself you will do better in the future. And dont be surprised that when you use the scout oath and law for guidance, others will recognize those values in you and respect you for it. Set high standards for yourself and strive to reach them. No one can ask anymore of you First class Requirement #10 p164 At troop and patrol gatherings you've recited the Scout Oath and the Scout Law dozens of times. The words come easily to you, but do you know what those words mean? The Scout Oath and Scout Law are not just for reciting at meetings. They are not just to be obeyed while you are wearing a uniform. The spirit of Scouting that they represent is every bit as important when you are at home, at school and in your community. The Scout Oath begins with the words, "On my honor. . ." Your honor is your word. By giving your word, you are promising to be of good character and to keep your reputation untarnished. Be trustworthy in all you say and do. Extend friendship to others. Be thrifty with your time and resources. Be tolerant of others, regardless of their differences, and celebrate the great diversity that enriches our nation and the world. Express reverence in accordance with your beliefs. Offer a helping hand because you want to, not because you expect a reward. The standards set by the Scout Oath and Scout Law are very high Strive to reach them every day, and you will find that they become as natural for you to live by as they are for you to say. Star/Life/Eagle p170 BY NOW, DOING GOOD TURNS should be a regular part of your life You are always on the lookout for ways to help others. By now, Be Prepared should describe your efforts to make the most of educational opportunities, get along with others, and take part in outdoor adventures. By now, the Scout Oath and the twelve points of the Scout law should be the guidelines by which you direct your actions in your family, community, church, school, and nation. Living by these high standards is always a personal choice and something only you can fully measure. But by now, many other people should be seeing qualities in you that make it clear you are choosing "Your standing as a Scout does not depend so much on the skills of your hands or the badges an your merit badge sash, as an the spirit in your heart on what you are willing to do for others, on whether you are doing your very best to live the Scout Oath and Law:' What do you tell a scout who after you tell you will not sign off the "Scout Spirit" requirement in his handbook, shows you the above? Nothing in it says the Scoutmaster or anyone else will judge your scouting spirit

adjourning a SM conf without signing
OldGreyEagle replied to Lisabob's topic in Advancement Resources
Interesting thoughts. First I agree with Ed, the Scoutmaster Conference is not a Pass or Fail, it just has to happen, thats the way it's written. Then again, I disagree with Ed and here is why. Often times on the forum we will tell someone to remember that a Scoutmaster may have a Scoutmater Conference with a scout for any reason at any time. If a scout has been a prolem on an outing, perhaps taking the youth aside (in plain view of others I may add) and give him a quick Scoutmaster conference may be a good thing. However, what if the youth claims that quick Tete a Tete counts as the scoutmaster conference for rank advancement and then seeks a Board of Review? Clearly that is not the intent of the initial Scoutmaster Conference. Should the Scoutmaster clearly state, Johnny I need to talk to you and this is not a Scoutmaster Conference for Advancerment? If this needs to be done, are we not entering into the weenie world of uber semantics? What about if the scoutmaster tell the youth what needs to be improved and then, in the spirit of the title of this thread, says, we are not finished, we are adjourned until 4 weeks hence at which time we will discuss your behavior of the past 4 weeks. The youth can't claim the conference is over, because the scoutmaster said it wasnt, but again, is this the road to weenieville? Anyway, I always wanted to agree with Ed before I disagreed with him -
Skeptic, I could close the thread which would only elicit future comments castigating and excoriating me for censorship and possibly inbuing the forum with my leftist liberal idealogy so I wont as long as no one calls the other a dopey poopy face or words of similar ilk. Look at it this way, as long as this thread is active the principals aren't sniping at each other on other threads

I am sorry here. But, if the school district my children ever went to Barred, Prohibited, Outlawed or otherwise messed with my ability to send Chocolate Chip Cookies to school for my child to eat, you would all see me on TV holding a Chocolate Chip Cookie "Eat-In" on that school grounds and if you want to say that makes me a bad scout leader, fine. I invoke the spirit of Henry David Thoreau and would rather have scouts see an adult eating chocolate chip cookies than one cowed by the Cookie Polie You know, its not often one gets to wrap oneself in chocolate chip cookie and I could not pass up the opportunity

I am not a Lawyer, nor have I played one on TV nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night. How is that for a disclaimer? I have always heard real legal experts talk about the concept of "every dog gets one bite". A docile dog doesnt have to be chained up until he bites one person and then its chained up or the owner is responsible for the pets behavior. You have had your one bite it appears by the hisotry of the adult with the troop. You know his behavior. If he somehow loses control and harms another, what is your defense? It can't be "we didnt know", because clearly you do know. Saying he has Asperger's syndrome doesnt tell us much, its like saying he is tall. How tall? Compared to who? How does the tallness manifest itself? Is the tallness a danger to others, to the person? Asperger's covers so much territory it by itself doesnt mean much other than if its diagnosed, you know the behavior pattern.

I contend it was not the Haggis that got the better of me, it was the competitor that ate more than I, shouldn't have stopped to enjoy what I was eating I guess...

Being from Chicago, I can tell you about the ethnic make-up of the St Patricks Day Parade. Beleive, not everybody in that line is named Murphy or O'Hare, there are quite a few Kowalski's, Peskuski's, Ratkowski's, Kolchak and Santo's in there. I would not expect a Gay Pride parade to be much different(This message has been edited by OldGreyeagle)

So, when lost sit down and pull out your playing cards and start to play solitaire. Someone will come up from behind and point out the red seven should under the black eight and while its frustrating you are found. Unless of course you have stumbled upon the Lone Kibitizer at which time your problems are legend

Fie, Fie I say on thee my sir, why do you search to vex me? May a mole of unrepentant Giardia lamblia inhabit your next uncooked meal

One could say that these two are all over each other like an E.Coli colony on a piece of unrefrigerated chicken that has been out in the sun for 12 hours, but that gets long. Going after each other like Ed and Merlyn discussing anything is much shorter The problem is, both sides, Beavah and BobWhite, have definite strengths and talents that serve Scouting well. Once we get to this point, however cognitive comprehension begins to fail and while I am one to eschew obfuscation, I must embrace the moment to rationalize thought

Are you in a rural or urban area? One idea for a hike that I always liked was to "hike" around the local football/baseball stadium. Around the perimeter of the parking lots, all the way around. They get to see the park from all angles and all that makes up the complex. Of course, a little scouting is needed to see if its a good idea for your location, but most times its a blast

I start off from the CO parking lot and drive to the Council Camp where the week end campout is to be held. I realize I am behind the Scoutmaster's car, do I stomp on the brakes and allow cars to pass me to avoid breaking BSA policy? Do I pull over and let other traffic pass me so I am not behind the scoutmasters car? After slowing a bit to allow other cars to pass me I realize I am behind Charlie's car, the father of the SPL, d I slow down again? I realize Fred is now behind me, the father of the ASPL. Do I now castigate him at the camp site for being directly behind me? I think it best to leave and and come back to a central point. I remember we had a father and two scouts in the troop awhile back who would always "meet us up there" and then had to drive early back home. When I asked him why after about 3-4 times he said the chaos at the church was unbearable. Perhaps it was but for three years his kids never helped pack or unpack troop gear. SAdly he didnt get alot of the program in other parts either.

Question re inappropriate scout leader relationships
OldGreyEagle replied to NancyB's topic in Open Discussion - Program
OK, maybe class clown was a little harsh and so I apologize to GoldWinger for that, however, perhaps "master chain puller" would work better. Not above pushing buttons is another. -

Candide references notwithstanding you guys know GoldWinger is pretty much the forum clown and is not to be taken seriously, right? -
Back in the late sixties they troop of my youth went to the Grand Canyon, quite a trek from Chicago I can tell you. There I learned the joys of no cook meals especially for lunch. PB&J was one, Spam and Crackers was the other.

Beavah, I understand most of your comments have texture and nuance I do not readily pick up on and I blame me. I used Jblake as an example of how to do things right, he saw an issue, he handled that issue and got it resolved just as a man of charactor should. I made no mention of Lisabob
-
Thank you Beavah, I guess you are talking on a much higher plane than I am To be fair, I beleive JBlake, and I know he will let us know if I am wrong, worked with BSA officials to get a waiver for the arterillery portion of the Guide to Safe Scouting because it is what the crew does. Jblake knew the rules, applied for and got an exception to the rules and I see that as being responsible, he didnt ignore the rules he addressed them and the BSA acted rationally. Not always a behavior attributed to them here or anywhere.

Can "duress" be taken to be the understanding that unless I sign the paper saying I cant do X when I know I can and will and no one will stop me, that I cant buy the property so I sign it with everyone knowing what I promised isn't really a promise and is unenforcable?
-
Doubtless many have surmised I have no legal background at all, so keep that in mind with this question. If restrictive covenants were ruled unenforcable, why does the purchaser have to sign them in the first place? Is that not silly? I shall sign this paper saying I will not do X when everyone in the room knows I certainly will do x and have no reason not to and nobody is going to do anything about it because they couldnt if they wanted to Do I have that concept down?
-
Shortridge, I think frequent poster Kudu could probably be a great resource for such an experience

You know, I was recently labled a Liberal, and in not so flatteringly a way either. I was going to start off with a comment such as "And the Democrats share not blame in all this..." when it struck me. I have entered into the blame game where its more important to assign blame than to fix the problem and make sure it never happens again and to hold those responsible for the mess, responsible regardless of who it is. And saying there is blame enough for everyone and then not doing anything else is not being responsible either. My understanding is exectutives of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae made millions over the past few years or more. Where are they, will they be testifying to Congress in the manner of Roger Clemens or Mark Maquire? It was important to have steroid use in baseball investigated, what about this? BTW, anybody remember the Savings and Loan disaster of the mid 80's? WAsnt Neil Bush, scion of George W the poster child for the mess? It makes me wonder
