How do you handle the Merit Badge Process?
OldGreyEagle replied to jtswestark's topic in Advancement Resources
Aha, more information on the merit badge front Apparently a merit badge counselor in Pittsburgh was found guilty of abusing scouts. As a result, all merit badge counselors need to have a background check, something that originally was not done. In an attempt to be "safe" the Council Advancement Committee has decided that it would be a good idea to be sure only "registered, read background checked" merit badge counselors are having scouts sent to them for the purposes of having a merit badge done. So, its a question of youth protection. Troops using non registered counselors will be contacted and asked to use registered counselors, nothing definite on what happens to the badge for sure. -
Guy? What guy? Guy Williams? Guy Fawkes? are you being a wise Guy?

An issue developed in a Council close to where I live. This is what I know, or at least was told The Council Lodge was going to hold a raffle to raise money for Noac. I was told that the Lodge had asked and received assurances from AO National that the raffle was acceptable "as long as" the purchaser of the ticket also got something "else" in this case, a wooden coin. So, for $10 you got a small wooden coin and a raffle ticket. A few days prior to the drawing, the Scout Executive pulled the plug on the operation when it was brought to his attention. A local Not for Profit with a "raffle license" held the event. Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

How do you handle the Merit Badge Process?
OldGreyEagle replied to jtswestark's topic in Advancement Resources
All great questions Beavah, I am but a lowly District Merit Badge Dean. The questions you ask are great and I am not sure I have all the answers. Out of Council Counselors need to be identified as to what Council they are registered in so their status may be verified Do I deny the boy the badge? Nope, never said I did, the Council has said they will. Not sure if its happened as yet. For the internet advancement, paper must also be sumitted with the names of Merit badges, Scouts and Counselors. Do I like it? Nope, Do I think it is a good idea? Nope its what the Council Advancement Committee decided to do. OldGreyEagle just pawn in game of life -

I will try to explain my position I see The Game of Life the same way I see other related "mind benders" or activities designed to teach a lesson. The one I remember best is the excersise on ranking the importance of materials one has while stranded on the Moon. If you have participated in this activity, the next time you do it, the impact is little to nothing. Leastwise that's the way I see it. -
How do you handle the Merit Badge Process?
OldGreyEagle replied to jtswestark's topic in Advancement Resources
In the Council I serve, the Counselor of each merit badge is to be listed on the Advancement Form (yes, I know there is no room for it, doesnt mean it can't be required) and if the Counselor's name isnt on record, it doesnt count -
Indeed BobWhite I have changed. I would like to think for the better

What is the use of knowledge if people will not accept that knowledge because of the manner in which it is presented?

Each Chartering Organization is to have one COR, that is BSA policy Has a Chartering Orgaization ever had three? One each for the Pack, Troop, and Crew? I don't know as I am not familiar with all the Chartering Organizations in the country. How could such a thing happen? I don't know, Somebody thinks it would be a good idea so the DE says fine, we will have 3 COR's, one for each unit and he makes sure only one name appears on the Charter but the three individuals act like they are COR's and the Chartering Organization treats all three like they are COR's and the units treat them like they are COR's and what difference does it make?

Tell you what, perhaps semantics wasnt the correct word. At times I do not have the command of the English language that I wish I had, otherwise this might not be the sentence I was thinking of. If I had the command of the English Language I desire I would be able to say something that would cause all the combatants to drop their weapons, smack their collective foreheads, exclaim "What are we doing" and all be friends. But, alas that ain't gonna happen. BobWhite, you are the Rules and Regulations person, and there isnt anything wrong with that, it's needed. BSA rules and regulations exist for a purpose Beavah is more of the lets look at the situation and see how the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization fits in with what we are doing, and if these three aren't compromised, it's really no big deal (I think I have that right Beavah, otherwise let me know) What do you want me to do? Pick a side? I have had issues with both your styles and am trying to learn to live with them. Perhaps simply stating your opinions with out referencing anyone else would be a good start. My point in asking of the initial question had been answered was because no one asked how many COR's an instution could have was not asked.

Semantics aside, are we answering the question that initiated the thread?

Gee, I hope I never get as distractable as you guys knock on wood, Is that that front door or the back door?

adjourning a SM conf without signing
OldGreyEagle replied to Lisabob's topic in Advancement Resources
Ha, I get to do this again I agree with GoldWinger, if a Life Scout is tabbed a Quartermaster and is on the troops records as a Quartermaster for 6 months, then his POR is complete. If he never showed up at any activity is irrelevant. If he is on the books the time counts. Now, I would expect that after a month of no shows, the troop leadership would investigate the situation and inquire about the scout's interest in the position, the troop or scouting period. If the scout shows no inclination to do anything, he gets removed from the POR and thats it until he requests another chance. You don't let him stay in a position for 6 months and then say hey you didnt so anything, so it doesnt count, you counsel him along the way and then if necessary take him out of the position so the time doesnt count. Overall, its the same effect, advancement is stopped and the program follwed. -

Perhaps urinating in a water bottle once is youthful hijinks, but as detailed the behavior also included urinating on a tent. Once perhaps is poor judgement, twice? Thats a pattern. Beating up other scouts? Thats no being a kid, thats a real problem. The two scouts who are comming for a Conference. If they have not been doing their jobs, they don't qualify for advancement. That one is easy. Have you told the scouts they lack the Position of Responsibility? Have you notified them they no longer are qualified to wear the patch? There is no reason to advance raspscallions, tell them when they screw up and in no uncertain terms, don't wait until a scoutmaster conference to do so. -
I wouldnt sweat it Pack, from where I sit unknowingly consuming a consecrated host is the least of your worries and I say with all the love and respect I have
-
The Hosts, unleavened bread, are transubstantiated into the body of Christ at the Consecration part of the Mass. Once consecrated, they are always the body of Christ. If you go into a Catholic Church, off to the side you usually will see what most often looks like a golden safe, it is the Tabernacle where the hosts are stored Next to it will be a red votive light. The red votive light is the symbol that the body of Christ is present in the Tabernacle. They are stored there as the priest may need some hosts to take to a hospital or parishoners home.

I think the whole process needs a facelift. This was no debate and to call it such demeans the Debate Club of every high school in the US. It was an opportunity for two marrionettes to espouse party lines at all times. A debate is when a position is taken, that position is attacked by the other side and then the position is defended. I didnt see any of that. It still comes down to a Democrat who says Washington is broken and needs to be fixed and the guy who will help me fix it has 35 years working in a broken system The Republican says my opponent is way too inexperienced to change what needs to be changed and the person who will help me change things is somebody who has less experience than my opponent Biden talked about how much gas costs, what would gas cost if we had drilled domestically? Biden says it would ten years to get a drop of new gas to market. Well, 10 years will pass, then what do we do? Palin? For all her smiles and cute hair, I am not sure she said a thing she hadn't rehearsed 100 times. Bidden kept talking about how McCain voted against funding the soldiers in Iraq. Palin mentioned it was becasue the funding bill has a dealine for withdrawl in it. She should have expounded on it and driven that home, instead she juet repeated it like a sheep with no brain Color me in despair(This message has been edited by OldGreyeagle)

OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I am the Moderator who doesn't want the specifics of the "Win All You Can" game because of the number of PM's I received asking me to delete a thread that did deal with the specifics of the game. My take on the game is that it was petty and stupid and a definite low point in the course. It may be that the Staff didnt present it correctly but any activity that ends with a patrol ready to go home and has the Course Director pinned up against the wall facing angry participants requires at least a tad bit of tweaking.
