BSA not allowing scouts to ring bells for Salvation Army
OldGreyEagle replied to FireKat's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Gee bob, I was reacting to "Nothing prevents the unit from both doing what they want and doing what the BSA requires except for the behavior of the unit leaders." Didnt think it right to jut call out the unit leaders when the Council knows about it. Now, we could get into a semantical argument over who Council is and what the Council is and argue about who has the authority to do what to whome and most likley all that would do is ellicit a comment like, well Councils have been know to be wrong to and that is correct, By all means the Salvation Army should be helped by the units and the units should follow the rules. if I am a new leader to the unit and the experienced leaders tell me this is what we do and no one says not to, even when I read the Fundraising rules, I am not sure I would connect it to the Salvation Army thing. So, the Boy Scouts are out there raising money for the Salvation Army and its agains the rules. Can't say I give a spit and hope Schiff's group raises lots of money cause lots of people need it -
BSA not allowing scouts to ring bells for Salvation Army
OldGreyEagle replied to FireKat's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well, from what I understand the Council has knowledge of the units ringing bells for the Salvation Army as Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts. So, let us not berate the unit leaders without at least a wagging finger pointed at the Council as well. I agree Unit Leaders should know the Rules but then, so should the Council -
You know what, we havent had a good song for awhile and this is the best, and before anyone accuses me of highjacking a thread, heck its done by the animals In this dirty old part of the city Where the sun refused to shine People tell me there ain't no use in tryin' Now my girl you're so young and pretty And one thing I know is true You'll be dead before your time is due, I know Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin' Watched his hair been turnin' grey He's been workin' and slavin' his life away Oh yes I know it (Yeah!) SO if you have an active program that engages older scouts with expectations and genuine feelings of being needed, wanted and respect and they stay, what a concept! Wonder why others don't do this?

When Is It Proper to Physically Stirke Another?

Well, sure when you explain it like that -
When Is It Proper to Physically Stirke Another?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Yeah Pack, Might makes right, every scout knows that -
a few years back at the request of the District Committee, I did a little digging to see how old scouts were in the District when they "made" Eagle. I settled on using the date of the Eagle Board of review as it's easily found on the forms. The average age of a scout sitting for the EBOR was 18.1 months for the first year I checked and 17.8 and 17.9 for the 2 years subsequent. Now, this is the average age, we had some younger Eagles but its not like Eagle has become a Middle School thing in my corner of the world. I have heard that the Boy Scout program is geared to 12-14 year olds or so that is because the 15-18 year olds are supposed to be running the prgram and its easier to be 15 and running a program designed for 12-14 than it is to be 15 and run a program desgined for 18

When Is It Proper to Physically Stirke Another?

Liz, I know something you don't know... -
Quick show of hands, who was prettier Jaromir Jagr as a Penquin or David Cassidy as Keith Patridge?

Ed, Ed , Ed, Ed, Ed, you wild and crazy guy, why should you care? One of the primary arguments against Homosexuality tends to sound something like, "its unnatural" or "it doesnt occur in nature" and if there are Gay Penguins, then Homosexuality isn't unnatural, Homosexuality does occur in nature and Homosexuality is not a personal choice but a born, natural orientation
-
Just another reason I shy away from wearing a tuxedo, wouldnt want to be confused with a gay penquin

when you start a topic, do you select a section to put the thread in?

When Is It Proper to Physically Stirke Another?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Perhaps it would be better to put them to the pain, let me explain, To the pain. The first thing they will lose will be their feet below the ankles. Then their hands at the wrists. Next their nose. And then the tongue. The next thing they will lose will be their left eye followed by their right. Their ears they keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing their hideousness will be theirs to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in their perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave them in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever. And let that be a lesson to them -

When Is It Proper to Physically Stirke Another?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Per the norm, I didnt take time to phrase this the way I should have. I will be very specific this time. I started this thread because Kudu made refrence in the parent thread that a mentally challenged ASM called the SPL (who is black) the N word. The SPL reacted by punching the ASM square in the nose. Then, after a variety of posts Kudu posted his was glad his SPL's actions saved the Troop from having to deal with racial sensitivity. Upon investigatin Kudu found no one in the troop had an issue with the SPL's actions. I think that is a fair review, I may have left a few details out, none germane, but I could be wrong. No one commented on Kudu's posts, I started this thread because I think the SPL was wrong but in my haste I realize I didnt give a enough background. Way back in my youth, my grandmother was a wizard with Kielbasa and Czernina, yes she was Polish and I am half Polish. It being the 60's and all, the neighborhood kids loved to tell me the latest dumb polock joke. At first it drove me crazy and was involved in several fights, with me usually the worst of it. My mother would want to know why I was in a fight. I I would say Bob called me a polock, or you a polock or told a dumb polock joke and she would laugh and say well, they are just jealous and you are a bigger person than they are and dont sink to their level. Those all may not have been at one time, rather over the course of time. The issue is, it got to the point if I was in a dumb polock induced fight, I didnt want to go home because I knew I would have one more smack comming because I got in the fight in the first place. My mother and father said, words are not worth fighting over. So, if some one calls you a dumb wop, dago, mic, spic, kike, kraut or DP, do you get to punch them ? Once? More? The reason I bring this up is because I know youth read these forums. I want them to know that the reponse to being called a name, although hurtful, does not justify a physical response. Now, since I fought over the exact same thing, I could look a little silly saying don't do as I do, do as I say. But I do want to emphasize that fighting, except to protect one self or another from immediate harm is not proper. -
So, in the parent thread at least one poster felt that it was proper to physically strike another person because of a comment. When is physical violence (excepting self-defense) acceptable? Could striking another due to a comment be construed as Self-Defense? I realize the past, a "sock to the jaw" was an often occurence. In "Grapes of Wrath" threatening a "sock to the jaw" was used frequently. So, is this acceptable? And I mean either a sock to the jaw, punch square to the nose and any other similar pugilistic action.

Scouting at the 2009 Inauguration
OldGreyEagle replied to jhubb's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Congrats jhubb, I hope you and all the scouts have a great time and a life long memory NB I took out all the non-related stuff -
Rythos, Eagle is given by National, once given, the Council could not deny it, heck they don't have anything to do with it. Well, they would have had to have had a Board of Review and all that. But if the Council gave an EBOR and denied a scout Eagle and the scout appeals "all the way to National" its National's award to give out, the Council could not stop it
-
because they are so dam mischievous but then again, when the wood chips are down, they do give a dam, or two...

keoki12, did you ever post this issue under the name Rikki12 in the thread "He Made a Mistake - Will You Turn Your Back on Him?"?

Any hope of Eagle in this situation?
OldGreyEagle replied to urloony's topic in Advancement Resources
AS a Life Scout with designs on Eagle, he should have known what were approved POR's when one was offered. -
"Beavah, how about some of your legal expertise? "
OldGreyEagle replied to Eamonn's topic in Open Discussion - Program
But the title isn't Beavah how about some of your Lawyer expertise, as legal expertise could mean the fine Beavah is a judge, a bailif, a legal secretary (as opposed to all those illegal secretaries out there)or a paralegal person (which while not being equal to an illegal secretary, stll raises doubts about the whole legal thing) -

To be clear, I, for one, don't like thread titles with peoples names in them that are disparaging, like OldGreyEagle is a Moron, or something similar. Now, I see this thread as not that at all, however, if anyone wants this thread to disappear, let me know.
