Denied rank advance. to Star...any advice
OldGreyEagle replied to SeaGull99's topic in Advancement Resources
Kudu, this thread is not about your perceptions about the errors in the BSA direction. Do you have any specific advice for SeaGull99? -
Why does sports/band/etc seem to trump Scouting?
OldGreyEagle replied to kraut-60's topic in Open Discussion - Program
A troop that allows its SPL to be absent for a month probably deserves him, and if a scoutmaster accepts a merit badge requirement its on his head. Then again, is he a registered merit badge counselor? Youth only advance when the system signs them off, the local unit is the nucleus of advancement, if youth are advanced without the proper skills being shown, its the units issue, not the BSA -
There was a socialism speaker at the Grange the other night and ol' Harry Winstead went and got all he't up about Socialism. He was telling his neighbor Arnold Foxworth all about it. Harry says "In Socialism, everything is shared by everyone, if I have two tractors and you don't have one, I would give you one of mine Arnold. And Arnold, if I had 200 chickens, I would give you 100 of them." Ol' Arnold thought about it, then asked Harry, "You mean if you had two cows you would give me one?" To which Harry says, "Curse you Arnold Foxworth, you KNOW I have two cows..."

actually, an assistant scoutmaster is not supposed to be at a Troop Committee meeting I know many units allow this, but as an ASM you dont have to be at the meetings. Then, as far as who hires/fires, that as discussed is the Chartering Organization, either the Insitutional Head or the Chartering Organization Representative representing the IH

Medical research is a bit of a sticky wicket. Thalidomide was sold and its use stopped after it was learned of the bith defect potential, that one was easy and traced back to inadequate tests before it was marketed. Then there are the DES daughters, women who while in utero were exposed to the hormone DES their mothers took, it increases chances of Cancer, Birth problems, and organ shapment. MRI is interesting in that we haven't used it for all that long. The basic operating principle in MRI is that the patient in placed in a highly magnetic field this tends to aline the electrons in the atoms of the body since the have a like electrical charge. After the scan is over, it is assumed that the electrons go back, and the atom does not suffer any damge. But if 99.999% of all atoms go back to normal, what about the remaining? What if we find that children of MRI paients have a greater chance, or almost certainty to develop some malady? What if someone suggest I take a good slap in the face to get real and I don't want to slow down medical research or technology. The CT replaced pneunoencephlograms and for that reason alone Hounsfield deserved the Nobel Prize. I would not want that the Dr Damadian's of the future be ham strung with impossible research demands before a technology or biologic is let loose. But I do think an honest explanation of risk benefit be explained to each patient, wait, its called "informed consent" what a concept! If the patient gives informed consent then they get the treatment. BTW, it also means if there is an averse reaction or result, and that result was talked about, no recovery of damsges is possible. if it's an unforseen complication that could not have been anticipated such as cancer in the daughters of DES patients, well, then, what do we do?

Life for Life may be a choice that a youth makes, anf if the youth is ok with it, then all adults have to be ok with it as well. But lets not also say that's Ok not to strive for a goal, or make excuses that the leadership project is hard, it was for that reason we went to the moon, not because it was easy , because it was hard. You would think more people would want to do the hard thing, because it is hard, at least from the tremor of the group

Whatever dude

I can't say I don't understand, but what do you do if the post is open, a willing candidate is there and no one else who is qualified steps up? Rather then artifically limit a person's involvment, why not let the person make the choice of how much time he is willing to commit? if he can't do it, no shame, but if he can, why not?

Kudu, I completely and utterly disagree with you

A Comment in the parent thread begs the question, who is District anyway?

What is / is not tolerable behavoir in a leader ?
OldGreyEagle replied to DeanRx's topic in Working with Kids
Maybe it was an attempt at humor, but no, the BSA is not ok with prejudical views against Gays and Atheists, they don't meet the membership requirements and thats it. Lets be clear that the BSA does not espouse hate towards anyone -
One could make the case that a church enhances the community. because of the prescence of a catholic church, catholics will buy proprty and settle in the community and therefore pay taxes. Remove the church or make it so the chuch must pay taxes and perhaps the church closes and without the church, the catholics move on to other areas and the community is lessened Its a thought

Contacting your Senator/Congressman
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Issues & Politics
John, I called the local office and got a women who clearly did not want to talk to me or anyone. When I started talking to her about the Economic Stimulus Bill she said she didnt knw anything about it and I should call the DC office and talk to the Legislative people, when I said I couldnt because the voice mail box was full, she said I shoud document it and write the senator. All very nice, but the senator already says snail mail isnt his preferred way of communicaton a nd if I wirte something I wait for the reply they want to give and I have to question them back and the time for discussion will be gone. Very irritating -
Contacting your Senator/Congressman
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Issues & Politics
AB, I hear you on the hand written mail thing, but check this http://casey.senate.gov/contact/ its from my home state senators website, note that it says and quoting from the website: "For security reasons, mail delivery to United States Capitol offices is very slow. The best way to contact me or my Washington, DC staff is via the contact form on this page, or either by fax at (202) 228-0604 or phone at (202) 224-6324." So, if I want to make a point on a topic that could be moot by the time my hand written leter get to DC I can call, but that is of no use if no one answers and the voice mail box is full or send an email which gets a generic thank you for calling reponse or a Fax, I may have to try that one, but if they can't keep up on voice mails, will a fax get any notice? Will try the Fax, after all, its a shot I have not as yet taken -
I have tried since Monday, Frb 2nd to call my home state's Senator's Office in Dc without success. I get a recording that says the offices are experiencing a large volume of calls and to leave a message. Then the recording says the voice mail box is full and the line goes dead. I was able to contact my Congressman's Office Anyone else experiencing this? I wanted to talk about the Economic Stimulus package but my position on it is not this thread's topic. How do you make your thoughts known when you can't talk to them? I did send an EMail from their web sites, but I have done that in the past and have received an obvious generic electronic answer that doesnt give me the feeling anyone read my initial thoughts. What has been your experience about contacting your COngressman or senators on the Federal level? OH, and to make it scouting related, Citizenship is one of the three aims of scouting

Not that I wouldnt ever want to put another fly in the ointment, but whay all the talk about the 15 year old girl. Unless this is the second time in history, there was another person around when the egg got fertilized. What responsibility does the father have in these matters? The father has responsibility in the matter also and all we hear is talk about the mother. It does take two to tango, Why isolate the girl?

This may be more paranoid right wing lunacy, its hard to tell these days, but if a Public School were to outfit a room specific to a particular religions worship requirements, that would be wrong, correct? I make reference to the school that was said to be putting in a Muslim Prayer room. Now, I know there was disagreement if that was actualy happening, but this would eliminate that sort of thing completely. correct
-
I thought a scout unit could meet, (not be sponsored by a public school you understand) in a public school as long as it follwed the procedures set forth that all groups had to follow. Therefore the Fellowship of Christian Atheletes could be in one room while the Muslim Students Group was in another and Pack XXX in yet another. Would this preclude these three groups from being in the school?

I know his father took care of Sodom and Gommorah quite effectively

What happened to the idea that we develop a society where a 15 year old girl would never be pregnant in the first place? Again, not that she never had sex (although that would be nice) Here we are planning punishments or behavior for after the fact and not much is being done on preventing the situaton in the first place.

There are many reasons for a D&C, just because a woman has a D&C it doesnt mean she had an abortion, that is for the non medical people in the room and youth. I don't want D&C to become synonamous with abortion
-
I know what a D&C is, a dilitation and curretage of the uterus walls, a partial bith abortion involves having roughly half the babies head outside the mothers body before the head is crushed. I don't see it as the same thing. The CPT book lists 9 methods of abortion

Pro Life requires personal responsibility
OldGreyEagle replied to scoutldr's topic in Issues & Politics
ASM, read my sentence, I said " Whether its abstinance, or methodical and consistent use of birth control unwanted pregnancies do not exist." I allow for the methodical and consistent use of birth control, its a concession for sure, but I would rather pay for Birth control than for the aborting of babies. The key is they methods have to be used. When I was in high school, plenty of guys and girls were having sex, (I wasnt one) but the only shame, it seemed to me, was when a girl got pregnant because of all the ways to prevent it. perhaps abstinence is the answer at some point, but not just yet(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)
