  1. The Moderators, such as myself , may edit, remove, close or change the location of a thread and nothing else. We don't control the ads, and I dont think Scouter-Terry does either, its a result of what we talk about, as proved in the Llama Llama Ding Dong Experiment Llama....Llama... Llama
  2. I discourage the wearing of a merit badge sash by any venturing youth. Only males can earn merit badges so if you have young ladies in the crew, they cannot earn a merit badge,or Eagle and the wearing of the sash only reminds us that while all youth are equal in Venturing, some are more equal than others. Still, this is my opinion and if a young gentleman wanted to, I would explain my reasoning and let him decide
  3. So, as attorney General, Tom Corbett, now Gov of Pennsylvania, knew of the Jerry Sandusky invertigation and because he didnt do anything "as soon as" he realized crimes were committed the Governor is responsible for anything bad that happened. So, where does this place "Deep Cover"operations. Can law enforcement agencies infiltrate criminal organizations and how much evidence do they need before arresting anybody? Was Serpico negligent? Should he have stopped bad things from happening? What about any undercover sting operation. What about buying drugs undercover and then not arresting the dealer in hopes of getting the supplier. What if the next drug buy results in the death of the user, is the undercover agent culpable? it would take a University Professor to come up with this one
  4. I understrand, when adults wear a knot because its a celebration of past deeds, brings in good memories, and does no discredit to the BSA its OK, as long as its the correct number of knots and they are the correct knots because if a scouter wears "too many" knots, then well, we all know he is in it just for himself and it couldnt possibly be as a conversation starter
  5. OK Guys, I think I get it now, the old rank patches serve as a reminder of deeds done and as conversation starters. It does no discredit and is a celebration of the past
  6. I am a little confused. If I am a First Class Scout, does it not follow at one time I was a Tenderfoot, then Second Class? and now I am First Class? Once a scout attains the Eagle rank, I know they made their way from Tenderfoot to Second Class to First Class to Star to Life to Eagle. That sorta follows, right? Does it make a difference to me if a unit wants to do what they want to do? Absolutely not, the leaders of such a unit should remember to give the same courtesy to any other unit who sees fit to "tweak" the program as well
  7. Before we tear off down to the road to how silly the artwork is, how many non-US born people can explain the symbolism of the US flag, they look at it and know its the USA, but how many can tell you the significance of the number of stripes, the colors, the blue field and why that number of stars Without an explanation the US flag looks a bit over designed, but in knowing what it all means, its gorgeous The same is true here
  8. Back amongst you guys. Was out of power for 52 hours, many huge trees in the neighborhood came down and took the lines with them. Mostly cleaned up but not all. Still many streets in town impassable because of down treea and not everyone has power, My wife has two daughters in New Jersey, one a mile from the Ocean near Asbury Park and another in Middletown Middletown is ok, the Asbury PArk one is bad off. House OK but no power and no prospect for quite awhile. Her parents are in Old Bridge, he is 91 and her mother is 86. Then again, he was on the beach at Normandy, he doesnt consider this stuff as major. SO, the house is a little cold, put on a sweater and relax. I know its worse in many places. Just a note and a sideways rant. So, I am listening to the local radio stations to get updates. It's been 36 hours with no power and the radio announcers talk about where you can find help on their Facebook page or the stations website? Excuse me, I wouldnt be listening to your lame station if it wasnt for the weather and if I could look this information up on the web, I wouldn't need it because I would have power in the first place. MORONS AND MENTAL MIDGETS
  9. I am in Bethlehem PA, they have been talking about Frankenstorm for so long, storm fatigue has set in, I have checked my flashlights so often, I will need to dip into the reserve supply, TV says its right around the corner, but is still a day off or so away Then again, it could be real bad real soon. So, the Eastcoast hunkers down and tells the rest of the country to behave until we get back?
  10. Thank You BD, good information for future courses and how not to run them (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  11. BadenP, excuse me but what are you talking about? How does my answer indicate I am a Venturing Leader who has not dealt with this issue?
  12. Are we equating Atheism with sodomy and other forms of sexual perversion? I think thats a leap that strains
  13. I am not sure a scout with a First Aid merit badge should ever get confused with a Fellowship trained surgeon, or a scout with an American Labor merit badge as a Union Negotiator. What they are are youth with more than just a glossed over view of the topics. How much further they go depends on the youth. I would expect the same of the Sustainability merit badge. INtroduce the concept, explain it and how much do you want 12-13 year olds to know? Other than its a concept that sure raises hackles
  14. I do seem to rememeber the initial thoughts about Leave No Trace, mostly along the lines that it was a long haired hippie weirdo tree hugging concept rooted in a pinko commie plot to feminize American boys Is it possible not everything is a politcal football? ? I thought as much
  15. Threads like this used to upset me a lot, first it would be to Breweister, is that scoutlike? Then to Merlyn, hey don't talk like that and now it's if you play in the mud you will get muddy. Merlyn has a right to his thoughts as does Brewmeister and everyone gets to decide if they want to read on On the other hand, this past weekend Runners World magazine hosted their first Runners Festival in Bethlehem PA, they had a 5K and 10K on Saturday Oct 20 and then a half Marathon on Oct 21. People who did all three did the "Hat Trick" and I was among those. Before each race they sang the national anthem and I have to say I was impresed. As much as everyone was talking and chatting, once they realized the Star Spangled Banner was being sung, they all were silent. It was better than anybody putting up the sign. For the half Marathon, 3,000 peole were talking and fell silent in 15 seconds, no side conversations, just quiet. A pair of runners, in full firefighter regalia replete with helemt and ax and an American flag. WHile the Star Spangled Banner was being sung, the runner hoisted the AMerican flag and people took off their hats and had hands on hearts. It was breathtaking. Then the song stopped and the race was on and 13.1 miles later I was done, so done... ANyway, we get to argue all we want, have fun and well, be happy we live here
  16. Actually its about men amd women above and under the age of 21, but ok
  17. I always thought Venturing borrowed the youth til' 21 thing from the OA... Both would have to change, correct?
  18. The first reponse is to remind people the files are from 1959 to 1991 and not all files are people who did indeed molest youth. Some were convicted, some were not some were just alleged and then talk about what we do now, today, to stop abuse I wish this had not happened Then again, I have similar feelings about the Treatment of Native Americans, Slaves, and Women in American Society
  19. had a nice young lady in the Crew who was quite the Female Lib type. As the Crew aged, the guys were all registering for Selective Service. I asked her if being the self professed womens equality advocate she was, did she fell slighted in not be able to sign up for Selective Service, she did change the subject...
  20. Climb On Safely says that One adult supervisor is required for every 10 participants with a minimum of two adults for any one group So, if you had 30 people climbing, you would three adults. Now, this is only for Climbing, I dont know about other specific activities, but generally two adults are enough for any activity unless specifics call for more supervision. Then again I would expect anyone who is doing a speficic acitivity, such as CLimbing, or Caving, or whatever would look at who was going and deciding upfront what level of skill the participants had and how any helpers (adult or otherwise) were needed
