  1. Actually, I would prefer the term "hand, SALUTE" for Scouts. How can we "present arms" when we are not armed? Right, we can't.
  2. BDPT00 is correct: " I don't consider it to be a "color guard." It's a "flag detail."" Scouts cannot, under BSA rules, be a Color GUARD, because, to guard, the unit must be armed. (In another life, I am Captain of a real Color Guard unit. An armed unit.) However, that is a minor point, lost on most civilians. (As is the fact that a Color Guard never bows and closes eyes during prayers.) I do prefer the term "Flag Detail" as well, since it is more accurate and emphasises the fact that we are not a military organization.
  3. Bevah asked: "Why should religious belief be treated any differently?" The answer is simple: ACLU.
  4. When I was a Unit Leader, I had one occasion where a Scout continued talking to his buddies after the speaker started. Politely asked the speaker for a moment, went to the boy and said "Since you consider what you say to be more important than our guest, please get up on the podium and tell everybody." It never happened again.
  5. Well, I do have to say that was the only negative thing I've had happen to me in OA. That's covering 4 Councils, 3 National Jamborees and uncounted other activities since 1955. I saw it as being protective of his lodge - just not the way I would have done it.
  6. I had an interesting experience re the different flap borders. Some years ago a job transfer moved me halfway across the country. I promptly transferred my membership to the new Council and Lodge to continue to serve. Of course, I sewed on the new CSP and proper lodge flap. First Camporee, another Scouter walked up to me and said "You have the wrong OA flap on." (No introduction, no welcome.) I said "Pardon me?... I don't think so." He said "That's a Vigil flap and I know every Vigil in this council." I replied "Evidently you don't." I then introduced myself and courteously showed him my Vigil card from my prior lodge. I would like to say that led to a friendship. Unfortunately, it didn't.
  7. Fall Fellowship was just as if I had been gone only a few months. New faces, but same spirit. Atta Kulla Kulla, quality lodge and Arrowmen!!
  8. I suggest that you show the video every year. To those Scouts who joined in the preceding year. No need to overly repeat, but no one should be left out. (Edited to fix careless typo.)(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  9. I like Farenheit, too. It's also digital, and more accurate, because the units are smaller.
  10. Interesting comment. I have never tried to drive anyone out. I kid nobody, most especially not myself. The fact remains, Scouting's main constituency in the US is fairly conservative types, among parents and adults.(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)

    kilt

But of course the tartan looks like the Webelos neckerchief. From the UK official website: "Worn by the 'Webelos' Cub Scouts. Copied from a neckerchief belonging to Philip M Smith 2000."
  12. "Scouting's main constituency in the US is what? Fairly conservative types, among parents and adults, no?" Most assuredly YES.
  13. The 24-hour clock (no, it's NOT "military time") makes so much more sense, too. "Meet me at the Dining Hall at 7:00 tomorrow." Uh.... are we having breakfast or dinner? Can't tell from that.
  14. Heh, heh, heh..... just pointing out the fallacy of the other arguments. HOWEVER, a private school that receives government money (such as student scholarships or loans) is just as restricted as a "public" school. (Happened here in my city.) And, yes, a company receiving government contracts is subject to rules that other companies do not have. Those are facts.
  15. Uhhhh... that's a school group, and it is money from a company with government contracts. According to the thread on "Scouts and First Amendment", this is illegal.
  16. If you look in the right place online, there is a picture of me at the 2010 Jamboree, wearing a uniform shirt with an 1981 Jamboree patch - it's the first one I went to. (Also in a kilt, but that's another thread.) Nobody made any adverse comment whatsoever.
  17. "Day-month-year" IS more logical (and we use it verbally all the time - as in "Camp starts the 5th of April."). Everybody in the world except U. S. civilians use that format, so it is easy to remember: If it's not U.S. civilians talking, then the first number is the day. (As a ham operator, all my records and logs are in that format, as well as in UTC time. It's when I have to convert from DMY that I get confused......)
  18. Check with your local Masonic Lodge. Their goals: to take good people and make them better, and their MANY charitable works make them a natural partner. Plus they always own a building and rarely if ever have a bar in it. (Never have a bar in my part of the country.)
  19. Nope. McDonald's is a private business and not chartered. Now, if they were the FIRST to come up with a "hamburger", they could register that as a trademark, once they traded in interstate commerce. Since they did not, and have never had a "hamburger" that was even above average, they are clearly not eligible for ANY governmental protection of the name. The city would be the one eligible for that claim, imo. (And THIS people disagrees that theirs are the best fries. They are good, not the best.)(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  20. Actually, Kudu, I'm conservative enough to feel that each country (or state, a synonym) should have the right to define its institutions in whatever way that best fits their peoples and cultures. As long as the people come first.
  21. Where did you get the idea that conservatives would be against anything international?? I'm as conservative as it gets. I travel internationally extensively, and as a ham op, talk to people from literally hundreds of countries. I have HUGE respect for other cultures, peoples, religions and customs. That's WHY I'm so conservative politically. I believe people need to be free to practice their own cultures, religions, etc.
  22. My lodge has Vigil names posted online, too. But only back to 1980. So I'm not there. :^ Still.... looking forward to it.
  23. Well, I'll find out this weekend. I paid my dues and signed on again after a 20 year lapse and several household moves. This weekend is Fall Fellowship, and I'm going - I'll let you know how welcoming they are. (I'm taking a good copy of my Vigil certificate - from the same lodge in 1977 - just for documentation.)
