I think it depends on the traditions of the Troop. I know that back in the unit I was in as a boy, they have NEVER had an ECoH. All Eagles are presented at the Troop Court of Honor -- has always been done that way since the Troop started in 1955. And over that time, some 256 young men have earned the rank of Eagle. The PLC feels that they want every scout, including that new "Scout" to see the Eagle being presented, so that they too get the sense that they can "do it." Unfortunately, when I attend ECoH ceremonies here locally, I rarely see younger Scouts or even Cubs in attendance. So I agree with their reasoning.

My favorite uniform is one I never had the chance to wear ... while I loved my "red piping" uniform, and was thrilled when I was able to wear my dark green Exploring shirt ... my favorite is the old wool suit coat with belt. Usually worn by Commissioners, you wore metal collar emblems to indicate your position, and a smokey hat with a similar pin. Under you wore a long sleeve green dress shirt with tie (where square knots, red & white council or local patches were worn). From the 1st edition of the "Den Chief's Denbook" comes one of the best answers, and it deals with the "relations" of the Den Chief: - With his boys: To be their leader and friend - not just their boss. - With their Denner: To train and use him as a valued helper and young leader. - With their Den Mother: To help plan and be an adult associate in Den responsibilities. - With their parents: A joint, friendly, helping relation; should "know" each other. - With their neighborhood: To fit into it happily and helpfully. - With their Cubmaster: To seek advise and suggestions and give cooperation. - With the other Dens: To cooperate and perhaps to compete some toward excellence. - With the Pack Committee: To know them and cooperate with them through the Cubmaster. - With the Sponsoring Institution: To effectively lead its boys and maintain a happy relation with it. When I was Cubmaster (some 30+ years ago) I had a great set of Den Chiefs and they were a great help to my Den Leaders. If they weren't helpful, well, then they were replaced. (Politely, with their unit leader.)

UVTS is down also. They are aware of the issue. They deployed new servers (the ones they were using were ancient, by any standaard). But there is no access to anything on ScoutNet right now. I spoke with the National Help Desk this morning.

Adam -- You need to spend more time with Scouts on an International level ... you go anywhere in Europe and you will see Scouts in jeans and some random tee, but they all have their neckers on! The thing that I am seeing is a great reception of the new uniforms by the youth! (And a red shirt for Adults and Rovers makes a lot of sense for a Canadian organization - and shows some real patriotism.)

Last I heard, the pocket has gone the way of the dodo bird and will not be on future shirts.

Bart -- I think that depends on what has been set for the dress of the event. Our district Golden Eagle dinners are suit and tie -- as is the annual Council Banquet. (The Eagle Scouts usually attend in uniform.) But personally, if I saw an SE or DE at a Unit, or a Camporee, RT, etc., I'd expect to see them in Scout uniform.

In the March Scouter magazine they mention that they are replacing the Insignia Guide with a new online site to be launched in May. So my guess is, they are not spending any time updating the online Insignia Guide.

Yesterday (3/25) Scouts Canada unveiled their new uniform: http://www.scouts.ca/uniformlaunch/uniform3.html You'll note there is a lot of discussion on the new shirts ... almost no mention of pants.

Some hundred or so years ago when I was CM I had a "primary" CA who we would "tag team" the Pack meeting. (While one was leading a segment, the other was prepping for the next segment.) When my son went to scouts, I stayed behind for one year, and during that time, we added "yet another" CA (I already had 3) - and we started working him into the "rotation" at Pack meetings. By October, I was not doing every 3rd presentation, but, every 6th! (Opening, then maybe closing) -- so by the time I left ... I really was just sitting back and letting them run the show! I told my son, the best gift I could give him was a year in Scouting without me -- and he found out what I meant when I showed up from work to his Troop meeting wearing the SM badge ... ;-) (I had been an SM in another State when he was just an infant.) From what I have seen, most units (around here at least) credit the young men based on a percentage of hours worked and what was sold that day.
