youth Leaders not willing to put time in
troop251scout replied to troop251scout's topic in The Patrol Method
Thank you for the responses they truly helped and starting tonight i will completely change and try out the different suggestions you gave! It is just hard to have people who are not as into the who expierence as i am and gets really frustrating when ever i know that they didnt put any effort into what they did or didnt do it the way i wanted it done but like you all said we are a team and need to work together and i guess that i just need to ease up alittle bit and sort of back off of them on my expectations as they are currently very high! Once again thank you! -Troop251scout -
Youth Members on Council Executive Boards vs. Council Committee
troop251scout replied to DDHII's topic in Council Relations
This is the first time i have heard of having youth on the board but in my opinion it is a good idea! I mean everyone stresses scout run troop well wouldnt it be beneficial to have a few scouts opinions on the way council is run?? I know if youth were to help my council it might actually get something done. -
I was just wondering if anyone has been to any outstanding camps on the east coast. we are looking around for future summers! We have been to Ockanickon which is by far one of the nicest and best run camps i have been to. All of their staff is nice and we even have a staff memeber from our troop there! They have a nice, air conditioned dining hall with a nice pool and everything is well spread out! Your scouts will enjoy it. Also, There is treasure island where we went last summer and this summer! IT is cool because it is on an island... yes, you have to get a boat over to it. Plus it is where the OA was started(i believe) so there is alot of history behind it. The staff members are awsome and it is a cool camp

Nothing has been posted in here for awhile so i figured i would post one fundraiser that we do.... Our spaghetti dinner. We make about 2,000 at each dinner and they are alot of fun to put together. We get everything donated and have live music and they are alot of fun... if anyone would like more info on how i run them or files from them, send me a personal message!

HEllo, Sorry if you have seen my name alot but i have learned alot on here and i am trying to get all of my various questions answered. I was just wondering if any troops have come up with forms that they use to do things. I have found a few forms but i would like to see what other troops use. If you have any, please let me know what they are used for (attendance, others) and i will send you my email address. Thanks in advance! YIS, Troop251scout

My troop doesnt have a rule against their parent conducting the mb for them the only thing they ask is that another scout do the merit badge at the same time so they will treat both as if they were scouts from the troop not their own son/sons. This has seemed to work + it gives others a chance todo the meritbadges!

Well, I know how you feel. I am spl for my troop and i have had to deal with many situations many of which i would rather not. Telling some parents no is like telling a wall not to stand. They have been doing it for so long that they dont know any different. So, what we do is, sit the parents going on the trips down before the campout and state to them that it is best if they do not get to close to their son as the son will always fall back onto them. If the son approaches them for help, they are to direct them to either me, the spl or my assistant and one of us will guide them through it. If we do see a parent cooking, i simply pull them aside and explain the situation to them and why they shouldnt be doing it and most of the time they agree and step back and i have someone else help. There are also those few parents that dont want to listen to the spl because they are still a kid so those parents i hand over to the scoutmaster. I mean i dont mind talking it our with them but im not sure if you would feel comfortable dealing with angry parents! I hope this helps! If you need anything else, pleasse feel free to send me a private message! YIS, Troop251scout

For my troop, spl, i make the older scouts do much of the teaching. this keeps the younger scouts entertained plus makes the older scouts feel like they are improtant and keeps them involved knowing they will be teaching something every week.

Have any troops taken weekend trips to Valley Forge, Lancaster, or Hershey Park??? If you have, please specify which ones and what you did on the trips... Like where you stayed, what activities you did etc. Thanks, Troop251scout

In our no electronics policy it clearly states NO CELL PHONES, PAGERS or anything of the sort. Being as i am the spl, i do see the scouts using them and when i do, i go over take them and talk to whom ever is on the line ( usually parents) i tell them that the phone is in the scoutmasters posession till the trip home. The parents never make a fuss because they know the rules!

Well hmm I would have to rate my scouting expierence a 12. I love scouting and everything that come with it. Being as i am only 16, i have met some awsome people and have learned many things that i can take with me for the rest of my life.

For our troop, it took us awhile to figure out what to do with the towing. Right now, only one person can tow and that is fine because he goes on almost every campout however it is alot of ware and tare on the vehicle. So we give the towing adult a free registration for trips and they get gas money for anything over an hour a way. any additional costs they are responsible for but the registration fees are usually pretty costly and add up quickly. We also give the SM in charge a free registration to becuase we ask them to drive. If any other leaders sign up, they have to pay their own way.

Anyone do a troop trip to Gettysburg PA????
troop251scout replied to ck76239's topic in Open Discussion - Program
We did a trip to gettysburg in november... It was a trip that everyone will remember. Here was our schedule... Friday - Arrive at campground - Artillery Ridge http://www.artilleryridge.com/cntctind.htm Saturday - We biked from our campground to one of the park entrences which was 500 feet down the road. We then followed the red path on the gettysburg map and covered almost everything needed for the 9 mile patch. We went to big round top where we ate lunch and saw most of the monuments. It took us 5 hours to do everything. Then that night we did a Haunted Tour. Which was awsome. Email HauntedGburg@aol.com the tour wasnt very scarry but we learned alot and it is a nice fun night out with the troop. Then on sunday, we went to the cemetary and walked around the visiters center + we went to the eternal light monument. Then we packed up and went home. There were alot of scout troops at the campground we stayed at and we found that the interaction between the troops added to the experience. If you have any questions, reply and i will be happy to give you more info on how we did anything! -
In our troop, we ask that the leaders go completely out of site of the scouts. they have to keep an eye open to because sometimes our scouts wonder and if the leader sees them, they must put it out imediately. As the SPL, if i see a leader smoking i ask him to stop and go somewhere else. If the problem continues, then i get the SM and CC involved and we have a meeting with the leader. I mean i dont mind them smoking but they dont need to be doing it around the kids!

Thanks!

Recently i have heard of troops having mystery campouts where they do not tell the kids where they are going until they get there! I was wondering if anyone had any more information on what they are, how to plan them & different destinations in the newjersey area...
