As a new training chairman for our district I have had quite an uphill cliimb. When I took over the previous chair was also the committee and the trainer. I thought with a district our size surely I would have no trouble recruiting a committee. Out of 700 adult volunteers I have 5 "full time" committee members and six other trainers who help from time to time. Only 147 of 700 people are fully trained. The new leaders seem excited about being trained, but trying to get the people who are experienced to come is like pulling teeth. We have called them written letters saying we are offer ing this which we see you don't have. You would think we were trying to give them ebola. So rather than wasting any more energy on the ones who don't think they need training; we are going to concentrate on the new units and new leaders. Maybe when tose old soldiers see how well the new units are doing the will come around. We are planning on hosting a booth at Scout Blast in April. This way we can reach more people and maybe improve our districts number of trained leaders. We have looked at the reports and the units without trained leaders don't show boys advancing and in turn lose boys. Now I don't know about most people but When I was a cubmaster I took pride in the fact that we could recruit a hundred boys and keep 80 of them throughout the year and through the next summer. It was simply because we were all trained and showed the boys a good time and they learned and had fun and advanced. When they advance it made them feel good so they keep coming. THAT'S WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.

Being a relatively new crew committee chair I am still trying to et a grasp of our program and the differences between the crew and troop. Our crew officers invite other youth to be members on a probationary period. This allows them time to learn and comply with the oath and code and learn our crew's bylaws. Then if they come to an agreement they become official Venturers and can join in the descision making processes for our programs; high adventure andd otherwise. You may say this in itself has become a type of honor society. With its pro's and cons this method keeps things running smoothly. I said all that to say this. Venturing is not as widely supported here as elsewhere, however A program similar to COD or whatever it would be called may give venturing the extra oomph it needs to become a viable program here in the North Florida Council. More desirable are the high peaks that require great effort than the easily ascendable peidmonts. You can quote me on that. Bill Newton, Crew committee chairman-C403

Hello crew, I have recently been elected as our crews committee chair.I have taken the fast start and leader specific training for venturing and now once I have done thesurveys for what members of our char. org and what the crew wants to do what is the best way to approach them with ideas or possible options for super activities and related activities leading up to it? I have already secured the use of a couple kiyaks for their camping trip during spring break.

I like it here already, Good question OG. I'll have to remember that one for our next roundtable.Any of you with much experience in the high adventure area please read my post(s) in the venturing I will be going there 1631 on 2/24/06 I feel that it will be the best area for my current needs. Hi everyone, Let me start out saying I am VERY impressed both with the quality of this website and the fun and educational atmosphere this site provides. A little about me; -I've been a scouter for 5 1/2 years approximatley -I helped lead in cub dens on pack and troop committee -I have served as an unit commissioner and A.D.C. -I have for the past year been the training chair and have had to build the committtee which is the largest geographic district in the North Florida Council and am struggling to find members. We have over 700 adult leaders and only 147 of them are trained. The unntrained don't want to come get the training they need they want to gripe about the training we are not offering that they can get from a nearby disrict. I won't let it get me down though I have 6 people on my committee and we will continue and train and build our committee until we have at least 30 people in our core and a unit trainer in each of our districts units. Other than that I am having a great time helping out in my sons enturing crew. Their motto is "mooch off the troop" lol. I hope noone will think I am negative because I am not I consider our situation an excellent opportunity for success and when we reach our goal I may write a book.
