  1. Gold Winger, I supose I over simplified my first responce. posibly that regulation is just our local councils policy to clarify the BSAs national camping policy. as a camp ranger I am mostly up to date with "our councils" camping policy. But I dont think its to dificult to inturpert this National policy, to tell you that this activity is not acceptible. "Overnight camping by Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Cub Scout dens as dens is not approved and certificates of liability insurance will not be provided by the Boy Scouts of America."
  2. im just not sure what suspending the leadership is going to do, exept piss of the scouts. you are supost to be someone to look up to, not someone to be feard. in my opinion we need to let the kids learn from there mistakes. what do thay learn from being suspended...and more so, do you realy think they will come back after they are suspended?
  3. in regards to scouting, anytime the group spends the night it IS considerd a campout and all rules and regulations are to be followed.
  4. your right in that there realy is not a whole lot you can do to punish them, but thats becuse you shouldent need to. I have always been of the opinion that you can not simply tell a scout that you are the atority, and expect him to lisson to you. its all about respect and how you ask. its importent to not just tell a scout what to do, rather ask him questions or make suggestions, to guide him in to makeing the right choice. another better way to have control over your scouts is to let the SPL be the athority. the boys will respect his opinon and be more likely to lisson to him. you cant just tell them to go away becuse someones hurt, You need to have something for them to do, think on your feet theres always some kind of fun they can go have. just remember that these kids sit in school all day lissoning to teachers, following the rules and lissoning to athority figures. they should be abule to come to scouts without fear of more rules.
  5. that is correct, as a scout I was registerd with my troop, my crew. and a second crew of former summer camp staff.
  6. I think the reason it is left up to the discretion of the SM, is that there is a vary wide and sometimes differing opinion on exactly who "others" are. I would hope that approval comes prior to the project so that we dont have to turn down already completed hours. however if a scout wants to use something he is doing anyway for service time, I would tend to think that maybe that falls under a diffrent catigory. but thats why its left to the scout master to deside, he knows the situation and the boy. the question he must ask is: is this a "project", or is the scout being lazy. we on here can not be the judge of that.
  7. I have always felt that a boy is less of an eagle the younger he gets it. and yet lately I have been made to feal like a second class member of the club by geting eagle when I was 17. Im just not sure where everyone got the idea that this is some kind of a race. I have no problem with a scout that gets eagle at 14, as long as he stays in the troop and continues to contribute. what gives us a bad name ar the 90% of 14 year old eagles who get the rank and are never heard from agen. as soon as I hit first class I slowed down a bit, I was a bugler, instructor, guide, asst. patrol leader, patrol leader, aspl 2 times, and spl. the whole time I worked on my rank, but helped my troop befor my self. the oldest youth member of a troop should not be 15. working at a camp I see alot of that. apon asking the SM why that is its always the same answer. they get the eagle when there 13-15 and leave. thats a problem. when I ask an older scout in my troop to help a younger scout, im talking to a 17 year old helping a 11 year old. and I am proud of that.
  8. its always been our troops policy that the mb counciler fills in the chart but the rest is done by the scout. the parents have no busness even seeing a blue card, let alone turning one in, or asking for one.
  9. our local council contacted the department at national that aproves the eagle candidetes. I dont remember the name of the gentlemen I talked to at national, but contacting the local council first is always the P.C. way to do it. but if its meritbadges your wondering about, I dont beleve they make it to the national level.
  10. a topic that resently came up in our troop is whether doing service projects at our local bsa camp can count for rank advancment.
  11. the problem we had getting infromation out of our council, and even national is that the computer records only go back till around 1998. aparently getting national to look through the paper trail is a real problem. but its definaltly worth a shot.
  12. I was resently looking into my troops 80 some year history. we dident have much in the way of records, but the local council had 2 files filled with troop records. the record the council keeps at recharder time show the names and ranks. this could help you find a year but not the exact date.
  13. what is carl up to these days anyway. we have not heard from him since january
