  1. While the OP may be correct that his example is dishonest on some level, in terms of severity, I would rank this right below jaywalking, sampling a grape in the produce section, and tearing the tag off a mattress.
  2. Most likely closer to a car camping experience. Cub Camping (differentiated from Webelos den camping) is strictly family camping. There are guidelines (from BALOO training) which dictate the type of amenities that must be present, like toilets, showers, water, etc. As for your specific questions, many of those can only be answered by your pack leadership. Will they be using tents provided by the camp, the pack, or does each family need their own? Is each family responsible for providing its own food, or will there be cooking for the group? Your pack should provide this sort of information, including a suggesting packing and equipment list, prior to the trip. Have fun!
  3. This is just mind boggling. I've commented before that when comparing and contrasting various BSA publications, it is as if they were written by different folks who have never spoken to one another. This passage confirms that impression: As it relates to social media, two-deep leadership means there should be no private messages and no one-on-one direct contact through email, Facebook messages, Twitter direct messaging, chats, instant messaging (Google Messenger, AIM, etc.), or other similar messaging features provided through social media sites. All communication between adults and youth should take place in a public forum (e.g. the Facebook wall), or at a bare minimum, electronic communication between adults and youth should always include one or more authorized adults openly copied (included) on the message or message thread. This certainly "sounds" like a youth protection provision, but it is found on a marketing page. I can find no reference to a "rule" like this in the actual YP or G2SS. So what is this? A recommendation? A Rule? A policy? If I become aware of of a violation am I obligated to report it to the SE? It says all communication; wouldn't this include phone? Last night, my son's PL called to talk to him about the upcoming campout. He wasn't home and I relayed a message. No one else was on the line. Should I be worried?
  4. I once had the fabric compltetly come apart on a pair of BSA Cotton slacks that I had only worn twice since getting them hemmed. (like the poly/wools but cotton, they aren't made anymore), they insisted that I get the same pair. Interesting interpretation. Probably not a National-owned store. Here's what the Scoutstuff website says: You are the final judge of our products. If, for any reason, you are dissatisfied with any item purchased from the Boy Scouts of America, you can either exchange the item for a replacement or receive a full and complete refund. No questions asked.
  5. The 5th edition, the one with the Norman Rockwell Scoutmaster painting on the front, is also quite good, and is much easier to find. I agree. I found this edition, along with the Handbook for Patrol Leaders from the same era on AbeBooks.com , a used book website quite reasonably priced.
  6. So BS-87, by his own admission, intentionally misrepresented the substance of the article. His statement: and yet it seems the Obama administration may move this slowly towards legislation After being confronted with the language in the article which states unequivocally that the administration does not support this becomes: The administration cannot politically support this VMT yet. How soon until an administration does though? Good to know.
  7. What kind of soap, please? Ivory. A tip I picked up here a while back is that it is easier to carve when the bar is not fresh from the store. Buy a few and let them sit in the closet for a few months. I don't know, but I'm guessing there must be some moisture left in the bar from the manufacturing process.
  8. Along this same line, what do you do if your CM doesn't want you to have the webelos out and about but rather be a baby-sitter for webelos, bears, and possibly the tigers and wolves as well? Based on the question, I'm assuming your Pack operates by having all of the den meetings at the same time, at the same place. This is one way to do it, and IMO, not the preferred way. The solution is simple: hold your den meetings at a different time and place. Send a note home that next week's den meeting is moved from the regular time to Saturday, and it will be held at the local nature center, where they will be going on a hike. The CM isn't responsible for planning your den meetings.
  9. The original poster asked a question that included a reference to a non-scouting abbreviation (it's not an acronym unless the letters themselves form an actual word) that might have several meanings. He/she gives very little information in the original post that might provide some contextual clues. Renax then complains when someone else points out this ambiguity goes as far as to suggest that Seattle Pioneer was at fault for not performing his own research on Google to try and decipher it. That, in my opinion, is the rudest comment in this thread. People post questions on this board and others do their best to provide answers. It is incumbent on those posting questions to include as much information as possible in the original post. We have all seen threads that go all over the place, and then the original poster provides an important detail that could have allowed a quick, concise answer in the first place. Why should others have to do research to understand what a poster could have explained in three words? At the time I am reading this, the counter on the home page says there are over 1300 active users on the board. If only one-quarter of those people read this thread and need to take Renax's advice to perform a Google search, and spend conservatively one minute doing so, that is collectively over five hours of time that could have been avoided by a few simple details in the original, vague post.(This message has been edited by the blancmange)
  10. Aren't Cubs a little young to need the prostate-specific antigen test?
  11. I look forward to it, BS-87. At least it will be entertainin'. He'll come up with them. They will be quotes from Farrah, Corsi, and the rest of the World Net Daily crowd. That's where most of the earlier stuff comes from.
  12. I wrote that to show how silly the left is for assigning the idea of 'fear' when people present cogent and reasonable opposing views. Views like this?: http://christwire.org/2010/05/is-obama-a-sleeper-agent-for-al-qaeda/ (This message has been edited by the blancmange)
  13. Trump has taken credit for forcing the release, but I think it was Packsaddle's prescience in starting this topic last week that was the real driving force. The timing makes more sense.
  14. A few ideas: 1. Get them outdoors: Hikes, Webelos den camping; small conservation projects. If you're not affiliated with a troop, find a neighboring one with a good outdoor program and get the boys camping with them. 2. Enlist the help of parents, friends, etc. with particular knowledge to help the boys with the various activity pins. Don't do them all yourself. For example, we had a local state rep. work with them on citizen, engineer for engineer (duh), paramedic for readyman, art professor for artist, etc. 3. Let them have some control. Pull out the list of activity pins and ask them what they want to work on. Bring a list of local trails and help them plan a hike. 4. Start doing the Boy Scout oath and laws right away, so it is second nature by the time they are ready for AOL.
  15. Does that mean CalicoPenn can never run for Cook County Board President?
  16. However, there is a valid opinion that the 14th amendment brought about a third category of "native born" which only requires birth in the United States OR to an American citizen. This is truly a fringe belief. I'm reminded of a quote: One person with a fantastic view may be suspected of delusions; two people with the identical view are just oddballs. - Judge Frank Easterbrook in U.S. v. James, 328 F.3d 953 (7th Cir. 2003)
  17. To sum it up, he's "native born", but not "natural born". This is the poster's view of what the law should be, not what it actually is. The 14th Amendment does not make this distinction, nor do any other relevant provisions of law. The only recognized categories are citizenship through birth (of which there are several sub-categories, two of which are being born on US Soil and being born to a citizen parent)and "naturalized" citizens who had to go through the naturalization process. Discussion of whether one or both parents of a child born in the U.S. are citizens is superfluous. Even a so-called "anchor baby" qualifies. There simply is no valid, articuable theory that a child, born to a citizen parent, in the United States, is not a natural born citizen. (This message has been edited by the blancmange)
  18. This won't end anything. The theories will just get wackier.
  19. The Blancmange- How do you pack in the margarine? this is one sugested backpacking meal plan Margarine is mostly vegetable oil, and does fine for a few days without refrigeration. On hot days, it will get quite soft, but it is not a food safety issue. Put a stick in plastic bag and keep it out of direct heat. Actually, looking at a package, it only says, "refrigerate for quality," which I assume means so it doesn't turn into a messy blob.
  20. One would think asking for volunteers would produce a better result than assigning someone who has no interest.
  21. This went over well with the scouts on a recent trip: Pasta parma rosa carbonara: 2 Packets Knorr brand Parma Rosa sauce mix powdered milk margarine Hormel brand Real Crumbled Bacon, precooked 4.3 oz package 1 pound of pasta, your choice. (Rotini works well) Start water boiling for pasta. Prepare the sauce as per package directions, using powdered milk. A stove capable of simmering, and a small whisk would be helpful. Prepare pasta as per package directions. Dump the package of precooked bacon into the sauce during the final minute. Drain pasta, add sauce with bacon. You can also use sliced pepperoni. This method uses a fair amount of water to cook the pasta, so if water is at a premium it doesn't work as well. I'd like to figure out if you could make this in one step (and one pot), furguring out the correct proportion of water to have the pasta absorb it and leave the sauce the right consistency.
  22. That's a great idea. I'll sit down and add some locations when I have time.
  23. The answer to your question is right in the rank requirement language: "Since joining, have participated in . . . "
  24. Instructions (with photos) for making your own: http://www.backpacker.com/skills-survival-bracelet/slideshows/117 Our Webelos made them and I still see them wearing them.
  25. All da violence? Did I miss a riot or insurrection somewhere? Does the woman know what da word "violence" means, I wonder? She didn't mean that to be a factual statement.
